I think I can hear the swearing from here. LOL! You'll be glad of the carpet in the winter.

NO NO NO NO! Chocolate Lamingtons.
Ewww ... chocolate jelly. I would assume so too Sarah. Never had the "pleasure".

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I agree with Janice, Sarah. We did the same in our place, although, granted, not a boat. But we did the floors, all sanded and stained, but just a little drafty. So recycled carpet, cut into shapes/rugs for the bedroom and study. Makes such a difference.

Oh and we had much swearing and it would have been so much easier than yourself.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Glad you got the carpet down, Sarah! I'm impressed you did it alone, that is a hard job!

And I thought you meant chocolate jelly (jello) too, Rusalka. I was so confused!

message 1758: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Ok. Got it. Chocolate Lamingtons not jelly. Thought it sounded wrong.

I'll probably make a couple runners out of the left over carpet for the sitting room as we have laminate in there and it was cold under foot last winter. To be fair, a lot of jobs end up being one man jobs due to the size of the area you have to work on.

Same here. I prefer the red ones, and of course cherry is the best one. It's weird, because I don't like anything else with cherry flavor...

I understood chocolate jelly, too. So funny.

In summary:
Chocolate jelly doesn't exist, and red is best.
No one eats red lamingtons, all lamingtons should be chocolate.

Those chargers break like crazy. Nook came out with a new charger to address that issue; I finally bought one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Original-...

If your daughter hasn't tried the new charger, she might want to. This is the exact one I got. (I linked to the exact seller because I've already tested it out and the chargers work perfectly.)

I think that, maybe, the Nook Tablet doesn't work well with the microSD card. It's so slow to add books- I think it took 30 minutes to load 100 Mb and I've never had it take that long on the Nook Color.

I have the Nook HD, so I think it is one of the earlier ones. It's not the new Samsung one, but I did get it for $40, which was great!

Thanks, Rusalka. I think I'll skip the pink Lamingtons. I thought my daughter would like them, but it's not like she doesn't like chocolate. Also am looking at the raspberry chocolate ones and found a good recipe at Stephanie's site for sticky toffee pudding. I like that she uses brown sugar instead of white for the sauce- It will definitely make it easier.

I do not understand why you had to take the whole piece on the boat to cut it. After the fact, but if you do it in the future, Sarah, make a paper pattern out of taped together pages of newspaper and then cut out your carpet, with the paper pattern on the reverse side. If the room is a straight sided rectangle, all is good, but if there are any bump outs, you need to reverse your pattern so make sure you know which is the top and which is the bottom.

Yes, Stanley knives are sharp. My left thumb can attest to that. 4 stitches and a scar on my knuckle remind me every time I have a knife in my hands. I was cutting carpet squares.

I have my original white, color strip on the bottom Nook too! I have the Samsung Nook tablet now too, but also use my black & white glow light for outdoor reading and between myself and the rest of my family we have 8 Nooks in the house! My husband uses his exclusively for Netflix. Go figure...

Lynda | 836 comments After dropping my Kindle in the bathtub, my mom bought me a Nook (she didn't know what the difference was between them). I've had my Nook Simple Touch now for about 3 years, and it's got several, fine lines running up and down it. However, I read about 95% of all my books on it. Every once in a while I have to reboot it, in order to get my computer to recognize it's connected. If ever there comes a day when it won't connect to the computer, I'm sunk, since most of my books are library downloads.

I have both the Kindle and the Nook apps on my phone and tablet, but my eyes get tired so quickly on those devices.

message 1769: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The good thing, Lynda, is that the Easy Readers are pretty inexpensive and you can pick them up very quickly. For reading out doors, nothing beats them. The only reason that I got my tablet is for the convenience of being able to download library books without having to hook up to the computer to download. My lap top belongs to my company and I do not bring it home every night. My old desktop died and I just have not wanted to spend the money for a new computer. After I retire, I will probably spring for one. For now, my iPod touch, Nooks and Tablet serve all my needs.

CFDeeDee It amaze me how you could read books from devices, I tried that with Harry Potter series, my eyes went sore every time I finish reading !

Thats why I prefer hard copies, read as much as I want, no eye pain !

It happened to me too, CFDeeDee, but I got used. Maybe you should try to adjust the brightness or font size. I started reading in my tablet, and now I even read in my laptop, something that seemed to be impossible to me a couple of years ago. I prefer hard copies, though.

message 1772: by CFDeeDee (new)

As the carpet was secondhand, we just turned up at the persons house and took the piece they had on offer. We knew it would be way bigger than what we needed. Then it stayed in our car a few days while we contemplated our next step. The problem we have is we have nowhere other than our boat (and car) to be able to lay out the carpet and cut it down to a smaller size or to the exact size either. So our only option really was to take it in to the boat and do it there which is where it got complicated. I do like the idea of the paper template though so I might make use of that when we do the rest of the boat. We might have to take over a friend or families front room/garage to cut it out.

I have to say, I was pretty chuffed that I didn't cut myself - I can be a little accident prone.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments CFDeeDee, for me it depends on the device. I have no problems with my ereader which has this specific paper-like screen, but I wouldn't like it on my tablet. I do crave a paper book after a couple of ebooks though, but that's for feel and smell, not reading comfort.

Collar bone breaks are a bummer because they don't do much for it. Poor baby.

Reading on an ereader is actually easier on my eyes because I can adjust font size, etc.

I know! :) The thing is that this son is the most active and bold of all of them. He is kind of dangerous. He is a climber, he is an ex-runaway (thanks God he is reformed now), and he is really tough. He is the one I was expecting to be in the ER with a broken bone one day. But this was a silly accident. He was being perfectly well behaved, and it just happened... poor thing...
And he is so sweet and funny. The nurse told him "Simon, we need to take a picture of your shoulder" and he answered "No, thank you." :)

@Janice, the doctor said is really painful, but the recovery is quick and rarely has any consequences. How is your shoulder?

@Kandice, enjoy!

@Stephanie, at least now you KNOW you are not moving. Uncertainty is stressful.

Glad to hear he's going to be okay and recover quickly. I hate it when my kids get hurt; I'd rather it be me.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Sandra wrote: "@Janice, the doctor said is really painful, but the recovery is quick and rarely has any consequences. How is your shoulder?..."

It was very painful, but I had a complicated break. The broken bone overlapped itself. They called it "buckled". Plus, it was almost 12 hours after it happened that it was treated, so I went for many hours with the sharp end of the bone digging into my muscle. It healed completely with no further complications or weakness in the shoulder.

message 1786: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Definitely, Sandra:) knowing does make things less stressful :)
I'm glad to hear that your son's collar bone will be ok:)

message 1787: by Kandice (new)

Kandice @Sandra, don't children say the funniest things? Especially in stressful situations. My youngest had an "incident" and the fire department and later an ambulance were dispatched ot our house. The nice firefighter is explaining to her that these "nice young men" are going to put her on a stretcher to take her to the hospital and all she kept saying was that she couldn't possibly leave the house with her "pockybook". The sweet firefighter then found it for her and carried it out to the ambulance.

It was almost surreal because finding it and getting it had become so important to this HUGE guy because it was so obviously important to her. She was 3!

message 1788: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Janice, ouch, that sounds painful...

@Stephanie, yes, he will be ok. He is having a bad morning. I think he is annoyed of not being able to move freely. Probably it hurts a little too, but I'm giving him painkillers in a regular basis the first days.

message 1789: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sandra, I hope your grandson feels better soon!

@Stephanie, at least you know that you are staying put now. I know it is hard to plan anything when you don't know if you will be staying or moving.

Regarding the ereaders vs real books, I have much less eye strain reading on my kindle than I do reading real books. And I don't enjoy reading on a computer at all because for some reason that causes the worst strain for me.

message 1790: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I have to share a funny that happened to me this morning.

I received two letters from my health insurance company showing where they have paid claims for doctor visits. One was for when I went to the Dentist last month but the other I have no idea what is for. I haven't been to any other doctor in months and the name on the letter isn't one I recognized. I googled him of course and he is at the same clinic as the OB/GYN I see, but I know I haven't been there since the beginning of the year.

I called the insurance company to inquire about it. She puts me on hold while she is pulling up the information and when she comes back on the phone she explains that it is correct because I hadn't reached my deductible yet this year. I say, "but that is the thing, I haven't been to the doctor, I don't know what this is for." She then says, "you mean you didn't have a baby?" I laugh and tell her no... actually I think I said "Oh God, no!" while laughing semi-hysterically!

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Similar situation, KimeyDiann - my friend went to the OB/GYN the other day. The receptionist laughed and said "Oh we have 3 Elaine's in the office today". Presumably she was 1 because there were only 2 women in the waiting room. A bit later the nurse comes and calls, "Elaine". The other woman jumped up, left her husband and trotted off with the nurse. About 15 minutes later, the nurse comes out and says, "Elaine S". The first Elaine's husband said, "That's my wife and she's been in the examining room for 15 minutes." Much confusion abounded since ES was being seen for EB's problem. LOL!
