Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments There's no bingo in casinos here either (I think, I never go). I think bingo in the Netherlands is mostly played by elderly people in nursing homes, and they can win cookies or something. And I played it as a child as well, also for toys or things like that.

message 1602: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I think that is how it is at the bingo halls around where I live. You can't often find good entertainment for that inexpensive. My husband and I lived in a casino town for a while and we used to go with $100 between us and play $5 single deck blackjack all night. Drinks were free as long as you were playing and it wasn't hard to get the dealers or pit bosses to comp you a free meal at one of the casino restaurants. As long as you had a good table to play with, it was always a blast. We haven't been in several years now and the last time we did, $5 tables were nonexistent and single-deck tables practically were too.

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments My husband and I are going on a much needed weekend away. This will be the first time that we have gone away alone for a whole weekend since our children were born. We are going to stay in a bed and breakfast in Savannah. It is a historic home that has been converted into a hotel. I am so ready and excited.

message 1608: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Have a great time Amanda. I can see why you're excited.

Bingo Halls and Casinos are separate things here in the UK. As Peggy mentioned, bingo is mainly played by the elderly. or at least that used to be the case. I've not been to one of the halls. I went to a casino a few years back for a Christmas meal. we got vouchers to use in the casino after. I used my vouchers but that was it. I have no desire to gamble. I do play the lottery occasionally but I get annoyed if I don't win - I'm a terrible loser.

message 1609: by Peggy (last edited Oct 09, 2015 12:43AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also play the lottery each month, although I wonder why. I know I will lose more money than I will ever win, but just the small chance to win a nice amount someday keeps me playing. I think the most I won in this one was 250 euros. Mostly it's nothing, sometimes it's 7.50 and maybe once a year I win 15.00 (which is also the price of a ticket).

I went to a casino once, when I was 18 or something, with my colleagues from where I had a weekend-job. There were these slot machines that you can play as often as you like with 1 or 2 euros, but for everything else the minimum bet was 25 euros. That was quite an amount of money for me back then, as a student, definitely considering that I would probably lose all of it, so I didn't play and haven't been since.

message 1610: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Congrats, Bella! All of our reservations seem to have large Casinos/Resorts, but back in the day the one nearest my house was just a large bingo hall. Now bingo has moved down the road into a smaller building, but it's still busy. I can't handle the cigarette smoke in the casinos, so I rarely go. I've never been to bingo, though. (I only buy lottery tickets when the mega is at like some godly amount like, 500,000,000 that sort of thing).

Mandy, enjoy Savannah, that's some place I've always wanted to visit.

Well, boo, I am sick...again. I can't believe this I've never had two colds back to back...I'm thinking that maybe the first one was just really bad allergies. I'm loading up on vitamins and healthy food. I need to make some bone broth to freeze this winter. Mainly, I just need to get back to eating Paleo, because I was never sick when I made an effort to eating clean.

message 1611: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You can smoke inside where you are Lynda? We've had a smoking ban come in a while back and it's so much better when you go to the pub or out to a restaurant. It's extended to all public buildings as well as train stations, bus stops, marquees at festivals, etc. It also becomes illegal (this month I think) to smoke in a car with an under 18 year old in.

message 1612: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here, no smoking in public buildings. I think it has been in effect for several years already, developing from government buildings to all public buildings and eventually also bars and restaurants.

message 1613: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments That is the same as us Sarah, a smoking ban everywhere also it is in effect, in cars with children here too.

message 1614: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Those are the same laws in California, you can't smoke in apartments, at Parks, pretty much anywhere, but I think it is a state to state law, it still is a bit shocking when I go to a restaurant in a different state and they ask me if I want the smoking or non-smoking section, it's been a very long time since I've had to make that decision, of course non-smoking

message 1615: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Congrats, Bella! that's a nice chunk of change.

Amanda, have fun! I love Savannah, it's a gorgeous place.

message 1616: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Post casinos are on tribal land, so they do not need to follow state or federal law, that is why they can even have a casino even though it is against the law in the state of California

message 1617: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments A colleague of mine is Greek and she came to the Netherlands 8 years ago or so. When she first took classes here she was so surprised that students ate and drank during class (which was considered rude in Greece), but even more surprised that smoking in class was not allowed (because everyone in Greece did so as part of the thinking process). Funny, these cultural differences.

message 1618: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments That is interesting Peggy :). The experienced nurses remember when they could smoke in the hospital at the nurses desk. I can't even imagine that now. We can't even have water at the desk now because of infection control policies.

message 1619: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments No water? What do they think can happen?

When I just started as a student smoking in designated areas in the train was still allowed. I remember how disgusting it was to open the door to a smoking compartment and find it full with smoking people and all blue with smoke. When it was really busy I still rather stand in a crowded place than sit in the smoking area.

message 1620: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Even here, bingo is viewed as an old people type game. And I have to admit, there's a lot more seniors playing bingo than poker, but poker doesn't give you a chance to win $125,000 with a dollar bet...

Smoking...I'm older, so I remember my first pediatrician blowing smoke in my face. My dentist, too.

message 1621: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments And almost all of us are sick with some virus- sore throat, coughing, congestion. The only one who hasn't gotten it is my husband, and he's probably the one who brought it home and infected us.

message 1622: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Berit wrote: "Post casinos are on tribal land, so they do not need to follow state or federal law, that is why they can even have a casino even though it is against the law in the state of California"

This is true in Washington, too. Otherwise, yes, smoking is banned in public places, or within a certain designated distance of a public place. The law is also state to state. I know last time I was in Indiana (which was about 10 years ago!), there was still a smoking section in the restaurant. That might have changed now. But, yeah, the reservations are exempt from many state and federal regulations - including sales tax, which makes them the least expensive place in WA to buy cigarettes, where the average cost of a pack is $8-$9.

message 1623: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Where I am in Australia it's even illegal to smoke outside in pubs, cafes or restaurants. you have to get up and move 20m away from food or drinks. as a nonsmoker, the best law ever

message 1624: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love that Rusalka. I don't like it when I'm eating outside and people at the table next to me smoke. Kind of ruins the food... Although most people seem to be quite considerate and don't light a cigarette when others are eating.

Bella, I'm not that old but I also remember the GP I had as a child smoking cigars when seeing patients.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Rusalka wrote: "as a nonsmoker, the best law ever"

I agree! Is so much better now! I really suffered in those closed places full of smoke... And when you were back at home you could still smell it in you hair and clothes. Disgusting.

message 1626: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Here, you have to be 5 meters from the door in order to smoke outside. The exception to that is at the hospital where you are not allowed to smoke near the entrances at all. That's so people who are allergic to the smoke can actually enter the facility.

message 1627: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I agree. There is nothing worse then being forced to inhale someone's cigarette smoke; or deal with the smell. We have a maintenance guy who smokes so much, when he comes into the office he smells of stale cigarettes, and I get an instant headache.

message 1632: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Hate smoking, my brother smokes though! But not at the house thankfully !!
The only rule around here is no smoking in a closed up public places, i.e malls, restaurants and etc
~

I cut my nails today and then I was trying to remove something, stupidly I used my thumb and mostly the cut off thumb nail to remove it. I caused the nail to be removed from the finger :(
It kept bleeding for a while and it still hurts so badly!
I tried to return back to drawing but that didn't work out so well!

So I guess I'll stick up with reading and delay all the drawing I have to do till my nail feels better !

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I'm glad for you, Anne.

Today I had the greatest disappointment related with friendship. I wasn't expecting that at may age.

message 1635: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Sandra, that is such a bummer, I cherish my friend so much, and if one of them were to disappoint me it would really affect me strongly, keep your head up!

Speaking of being disappointed I am so disappointed in my ex he and my daughter 17 have had a bad relationship for a long time, especially since we got divorced, but yesterday they got in a huge fight and he told her as well as me that she is no longer ever going to be part of his life, and that is his child! Very emotional weekend,, I mean I understand he and I are not always going to get along, otherwise why would he be divorced, but who is the adult here??? I'm just so irritated, sorry I had to vent! The word disappointed just reminded me of how disappointed I am in him.

I'm so sorry about your ex. Makes me feel lucky for my dad, faults and all. My brother in law got divorced last year and he called his father, looking for some moral support, I guess, on Christmas Day. For whatever reason, my FIL tells him that he doesn't think that my BIL is his biological son because his "mother was a whore who slept around." Best Christmas gift ever, right? Jerk, haven't spoken to him for 14 years. Hate his guts.

message 1639: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) That is the really sad thing I have an amazing father who is really there for me and all my kids, and my daughter sees that, so she knows what a good dad is!

The truly horrible thing is that if you asked anyone who isn't his ex, children, or grandchildren, everyone would say what a good, nice man my FIL is. He's just nicer the more distantly he's related to you, bonus niceness if you're not related at all by blood.

message 1645: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments That's so sad, Berit and Bella. This kind of behavior can be so hurtful.

On a cheerier note, Anne, loved hearing about your fun high school reunion. Just 5 years until my 40th reunion now.

As a former smoker, ugh, so happy to have cut that ball and chain, i made myself smoke outside always well away from any doors or other people except other smokers. Even at home, i only smoked outside. I hoped actually to diacourage my smoking besides not wanting my house to smell yucky.

It took me various tries and i had some slips, but i did succeed in quitting completely. Years ago now, but i still remember what a struggle it was. My dad was a smoker and i was around second hand smoke a good bit since he smoked in the house and the car (and restaurants and just about everywhere it seemed). Then i started sneaking cigarettes when i was 17, and then buying them myself after i turned 18. So glad that's long in the past.

message 1646: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I agree with Kandice - people can suck.

Crazy all this talk about high school reunions. It's the last thing I'd want to go to, no matter how many years on. So glad to get out of there. Facebook is kind of like a reunion and that's bad enough.

message 1647: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Looks like you had a great time Anne!

Sorry to hear your stories Sandra, Bella and Berit. People can suck indeed.

I have a reunion coming up too soon, but it is an elementary school reunion. It's been 19 years since we left that school! Incredible. The reason is that earlier this year that school had its 40-year anniversary and there was a big reunion planned, but I couldn't make it and neither could many of my classmates. So we decided to organize our own, just for our class. I'm looking forward to it, it's the first reunion I'll ever go to. I wouldn't be much interested in a high school reunion though.
