Tasha That's so true, Travis. The temp fluctuations are hard. We don't get as cold as you up in NY but we get those fluctuations too.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My cousin moved to Maryland and he can't handle NY anymore. Temps and weather. Early July he left Maryland at 6pm it was 90°. Made a pit stop in PA it was 86°. 90 minutes later they made a pit stop in NY (have new born baby causing all these stops). They get out of the car in NY to find it 42°. Welcome home

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It is awful when people break in and take things. We had a rash of radios being stollen from cars in our outer parking lots at work many years ago. (All before car alarms). They broke out the side windows, cut the wires and stole the radios. I never locked my doors then because I did not want to have to pay for a new radio AND a window. There was nothing else to steal anyway.

Good point about the good deeds, TJ. I have been grateful for some of those things too. I love to read about or watch the You Tube videos on Facebook regarding those things.

message 905: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We never had any experience with break-ins, but I don't think I would soon feel comfortable again in my house if someone broke in, especially when you're at home.

My parents installed an alarm-system a couple of years ago, and especially when I was home alone it made me sleep much easier. I want one too when we have a house. Right now in an apartment-building with over 200 apartments I don't worry so much. Bikes have been stolen several times from the courtyard though. And break-ins have happened in the storage rooms in the basement of the building.

We heard back from the house sellers, and our offer was too far below their minimum price. Not extremely so though, so we made a new offer and hopefully can meet in the middle. I might hear a final answer today! It's exciting and nerve-wracking.

message 906: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's good that you heard back - sooner than what they said it could take. Let's hope your second offer will be accepted.

message 907: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments We had a break-in five years ago. We were only out of the house about half an hour and came back to find that we had been burgled. They took a lot of stuff, mainly electrical items and gadgets but also some jewellery, some of which was irreplaceable as it had been handed down through our family. That was the most heartbreaking of all. The feeling of violation was awful too. It's horrible to think that these complete strangers have forced their way into your home and gone through and taken some of your personal belongings.

Ooh, that's exciting about the house Peggy! Hopefully they will accept your second offer.

message 908: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds like they really were watching for the right moment to break in Lisa. Did they ever find the burglars or did you get some of the stolen things back?

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Peggy wrote: "Sounds like they really were watching for the right moment to break in Lisa. Did they ever find the burglars or did you get some of the stolen things back?"

I know, that was what was really creepy. We didn't notice anything or anyone suspicious when we left the house so goodness knows where they were hiding. No, they never caught them so we never got any of our stolen things back. We got a small insurance payout so we were able to replace some of the things but it's never the same. It just makes me so angry that there are people out there who do these kinds of things (and worse) to others.

message 910: by Tasha (new)

Tasha That's horrible, Lisa, especially about the family heirlooms. We've always had dogs so I think/hope they will always be a deterrent. So far, so good. I can't imagine how awful and that must feel.

Good luck on this next round, Peggy!! So exciting. I remember waiting to hear back on our offers, it's so so exciting. :)

message 911: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Indeed, you can replace a tv but those personal things are a different matter. It makes me angry too, why do people do that?

News on the house: our offer was accepted! :D :D :D

message 913: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie YAY!!!! Awesome news, Peggy!!!! Congrats!!!

message 914: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie That is awful, Lisa:( I'm sorry that happened to you :(
My house that I had with me ex got broken into once when he was home because he didn't answer the door when the doorbell rang ( we had a pug at the time and he barked but my ex ignored him). The guy broke into the basement window, my ex heard the noise, the guy ran upstairs and tried going out the backdoor but it was locked(he had a game console that he was trying to steal but threw it down so he could get away. My ex threw a plate at him but missed. He got away. The cops came out but didn't do anything. The next day there was a threatening note on our door (turned out the note was by one of my ex's friends). Nice friend, huh?

Having your home/property being broken into is definitely a violating feeling :-(

That is horrible Stephanie! Who needs enemies when you have friends like that?!

message 919: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yeah...he had quite a few friends like that..one of the reasons why he is an ex :-)

message 920: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Congrats, Peggy!! Can't wait to hear all the details as you guys move in and make it a home. :)

Stephanie, that's a horrible story. :(

message 921: by Stephanie (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments That looks like a movie scene, Stephanie! I can't imagine the desperation of your ex being in the house half locked with this guy!

We haven't had any problems with burglars since we moved to the US (we live in a small and quite town), but we had many bad experiences back in Uruguay. Burglars would jump over the wall and take whatever they wanted from our backyard (balls, leaders, even our dog chain!). It happened at least twice a months for the last year we lived there. Once I noticed someone looking in our backyard looking through the window trying to see if someone was inside. It was a Saturday at 10 am! He ran away when I screamed to my husband to call the police. But we lived scared that one day they will finally break into the house. It never happened to us, but to my mother and her husband. They were sleeping and never noticed (thanks God) until the morning that their window had been opened and their cells, a camera and a laptop had been taken from their dinning room. The feeling is horrible.
Our car was stolen (and recovered) twice in 2 years. And I mean the whole car. It was parked in front of our house and when we went out it wasn't there anymore. Both times it was terribly damaged when the police recovered it. And it was just an old Opel '81, nothing fancy at all. (I loved that car, by the way).
It also was opened many times. We never replaced the radio, but they always find something to take...

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments It upsets me to see how things are now in Uruguay. It used to be such a pleasant and safe place, but everything has changed so much in the last 10 or so years. Most of my friedns and relatives have had experiences like these.

Bella | 502 comments Congratulations on the house, Peggy.

Just got back from vacation. Still exhausted after a few days of being home. We went to Orange County and San Diego, right when San Diego had those record high temp days. We've been to SD many times, but it's the first time I realized it's pretty much set up like Hawaii- many places and businesses have no a/c. So the heat was just brutal.

message 932: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yay, Peggy, I am so happy for you!

Off home to get ready for another weekend of yard work. Hacking blackberry bushes and weed-whacking tall grass. My army of workers better show up early - it is going to be a schorcher!

message 935: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks everyone!

I'm of to a surprise outing this afternoon, organized by my friends for my birthday (which was in March ;-)). I don't like not knowing things. I have to bring shoes for walking that can get dirty, a swimsuit, sunblock and sunglasses, and binoculars. I have no idea what we're going to do. I can't think of anything that includes those three things!

I also have to bring a picture of a puppy but I think that may be just for fun.

Sarah | 18550 comments Do let us know how your day pans out.

It's pretty hot here today. Not wanting to do a huge amount. Already handled 50 bricks 3 times between car and boat. Now I need to cool down for a bit.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Happy to report that my toe is much better - yay. No doctor. Instead, gave feet a long soak in hot, salt water. Made it a kind of a "spa" afternoon. Lo and behold, a splinter I didn't know was in there popped out while I was carefully removing dead, calloused skin on that big toe. Toe immediately much happier tho still sore. That was Monday. Almost healed now :)

Tasha Jayme, have a great vacation! I hope you get to read all through that stack of books.

Peggy, have fun on your bday adventure. Sounds like fun!

Glad to hear your toe is better too, TejasJanet. Splinters are killers!

Maybe I missed it, but what are you doing with 150 bricks on your boat? O_o

message 947: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Went over my head. I never even thought to questiob bricks on a boat

message 948: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments LOL, Travis! Me neither! Good question, Kandice!

message 949: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments it is a good question. we took the floor in the boat up as it needed replacing due to water damage from a leak. in doing so we discovered that the ballast in the bottom was gravel which is not ideal as it retains moisture. so we removed all the gravel and replacing it with bricks to the same weight. then we can put the new floor down. We're only doing this for bedroom and bathroom at the moment because it's a big job.

message 950: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I was thinking that 150 bricks would be too heavy unless it was ballast!

I would never have thought about what you use as ballast, but it makes sense.
