I've had the audio book for two years, downloaded from Sync as one of their summertime give-aways, so I was happy to finally sit down and listen. Even though the prediction about Blue and her true love turned me off, I found the book interesting. The story has enough surprises to keep the book from becoming predictable and hackneyed.
Grace I was a bit the same after I read the blurb for The Raven Boys, and especially as I wasn't a fan of Stiefvater's The Wolves of Mercy Falls series - I was just a bit 'meh' and actually had no intention of reading TRB until a friend convinced me to give it a go...as luck would have it these are now some of my favourite books!I'm glad you're enjoying the story so far!
I didn't love Shiver either, but there was something about this book that really drew me in. I think it was partly the local. I grew up in the western part of Virginia, which is near where Maggie Stiefvater lives, and Henrietta felt very genuine to me. I also like that romance doesn't dominate the storyline, even though the synopsis makes you think it might. It's much more of an Arthurian legend adventure story to me.
I agree Theo, the way Stiefvater gradually builds up the romantic tension over the three books so far is quite subtle and has a kind of innocence to it I think, a kind of fairytale-esque situation
I loved the beginning of The Raven Boys. It had a sort of magic about it. Plus all the characters have so many different sides to them which made it a lot more interesting.I had pretty high expectations going into it, since I haven't read Shiver and everyone seemed to love TRB.
I really liked the setting of this book, and most of the characters, I just found it hard to like Blue!
