As one of the top choices according to the poll, the Quarterly Book Club is reading The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker for the Jul-Sep Quarter of 2015.

So, what did you think? Hates? Likes? Droolworthiness? Plot? Romance? The characters themselves?

Rinji | 490 comments I have wanted to read this book for almost a year now. I can't wait to start reading it.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
oh wow, really??? I hadn't heard of it until Woolfie suggested it. In any case, I can't wait to read it! (though I gotta stop by the library to pick it up haha)

message 4: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Don't forget it this time. Lol.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
I totally won't!!!! I was bummed I didn't get to I'll Give You The Sun in time!!

message 6: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments I am sorry.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Lol don't worry about it, it was my fault for forgetting haha. But this time I have both the Golem and the Djinni and Miss Peregrine's ^^

message 8: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yay!

message 10: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments So has anyone else started to read this book yet? I am about 35% of the way finished with it and am loving it.

message 11: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments NOOOOOOOO! So I just opened my Kindle to continue reading this book and it has been returned to the library as it was on lend. Now I have to wait for it to become available again. I am very sad.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
:/ oh no that totally sucks!
Was it really good so far?

(I still gotta go pick up my copy from the library lol)

message 13: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yes I was really enjoying it up to the point I was just at. I think I had just started chapter 11 or 12. Oh well, I have placed a hold on it once again so all I have to do is wait.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
:) Goodie! Hopefully it come in soon!
I'm currently reading Miss Peregrine's and also another book--I want to focus on one, yet want to finish both of them asap. Almost finished my other book though.

message 15: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Ahh. I am in the middle of a couple books. Mainly because I can't seem to stay focused on a book for long.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Guess we're in a similar boat! Since I put Miss Peregrine's down momentarily to start my other book, and then put that down for a bit before trying my other book, and it went like that for a bit, but now my other book (The Last Wish) is actually getting really interesting.

message 17: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Ahh. I was really into Black Beauty but then I got burned out on it. However, I am still going to finish it I just needed a break.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
:) A break sometimes helps! That's what I'm doing with Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. I'm taking my time with it, reading it slowly. Since I don't want to end up hating it by reading fast. For some reason it's one of those books I just can't read as fast as I usually do!

message 19: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments I felt that way about The Hobbit. I have yet to read Lord of the Rings. Though it is on my to read list. I only have 11 chapters of Black Beauty left before I finish it. In about three days I read about 37 chapters.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
I plan to read the Hobbit when I get through all the LOTR books ^^. Ahhh, nice! Seems like you were flying through Black Beauty! I generally hate reading book over a long period, since I lose interest but for some classics, I make an exception. Man....I really need to get my hands on Go Set a Watchman asap!

message 21: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Never heard of it before. I might have to look into it later. If I start a book and get really into it and get close to the end, but put it down for a time, I always go back to it at some point.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
It's the second book to To Kill a Mockingbird and now it's out!!! I can't wait to get my hands on it (again...I don't know why I didn't preorder it). :) Me too, I try and finish every single book I've read. There's only been a few books I couldn't finish, but then I wasn't that into them to begin with :/.

message 23: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yay! I have this book back again. Now, to get into reading it again. Yay!

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Oh sweet! I have it too ^^

message 25: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yay

message 26: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Jones (jehseejones) | 24 comments My goodness. I have been the world's biggest slacker and I'm sorry that I haven't really been participating. I'm starting The Golem and the Djinni and I'm going to do everything I can to actually keep reading.

Does anyone else have go through non-reading spells? I feel like lately, every time I go to pick up a book, even one of my favorites, I can't focus or follow through with it. :(

message 27: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments I went through a non-reading spell of like 3 to 5 months this year. I had to take a long break because I was all burned out from school and reading any book I wanted to.

I am really enjoying The Golem and the Djinni.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Haha, it's okay Jessi! I only just got the Golem and the Djinni myself :).

And nah, you're not the only one! I was going through a non-reading spell--though it was only for a couple of weeks, still, I couldn't focus on anything, didn't want to read anything, and just couldn't be bothered picking up a book at all!

message 29: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Jones (jehseejones) | 24 comments Phew! I was thinking I was the only one! It's been months now. I even gave in and reread Harry Potter and I stopped halfway through the series because I couldn't focus anymore.

I'm hoping I'm past it though; I finally finished books six and seven of Harry Potter and so far I'm enjoying the Golem and the Jinni.

I hope I can continue to push through and keep reading. The whole nonreading thing is messing up my book challenge. O.o

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Nah, definitely not the only one! If I've read too much, then I'm more than likely to knuckle down and go through a non-reading spell. Not to mention all the other real life obligations that just get in the way.

Yay for you on finishing off Bk 6 and 7 for Harry Potter! I need to get started on the Golem and Djinni myself haha.

message 31: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Jones (jehseejones) | 24 comments I'm enjoying it, but I'm not reading as fast as I would like. Lol I've had a busy last couple of days though so I'm excited to jut sit down and read.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Heh don't you hate when that happens? you want to just sit, relax and read but so many things keep getting in the way?

message 33: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments I know the feeling as well. Though lately I don't have a lot to do with my time right now.

I am still enjoying this book but now that I am about 64% of the way done with this book I am having a hard time keeping my mind focused on the book. It sucks. I have really enjoyed this book so far and want to finish it. I guess part of it is because the book had been automatically returned to the library when I had started it on the first of July. Ugh. It sucks.... I want to finish this book. I only have 36% left until I am finished with it. :(

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
The Golem and the Djinni is currently sitting on the top of my bookshelf, on the pile of books I got from the library, and with very little time to sit down and read for a few straight hours, it's taunting me with its size!! It's got around 500 pages at least I think! (I haven't dared to pick it up yet, because while I love my big books, I'm intimidated!)

message 35: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Don't be. It is really good.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
I'll take your word for it and give it a crack either later tonight or tomorrow (Haha I'm partially afraid that once I get started, it'll be better than I expected and I won't be able to put it down, and then I'll freak out over not doing academic stuff!)

message 37: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Jones (jehseejones) | 24 comments Great news! I've finished this book! I struggled a little at some points, but I really enjoyed it. It really started to click when the pieces of the puzzle were revealed and it wasn't just me speculating.

Gosh, it can be so hard sitting down and reading knowing that you're putting off things that should be done first. What I wouldn't give to be able to shirk all responsibilities and need for exercise and just read nonstop!

message 38: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments I know what you mean. I am just glad right now that I don't have anything to do except a few chores.

message 39: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Jones (jehseejones) | 24 comments Chores, shmores.

mmm... S'mores. lol

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Mmm s'mores~~

I just realised an ARC I have is coming out in a couple of weeks and I haven't gotten through much of it, and I should have finished it by now...but it's kind of...uninteresting/confusing *sigh* but I'll finish it because I want to comment on it lol. And really I just want to read the books from the library--the Golem and the Djinni included.

@Jessi, congrats on finishing the book!

@Both of you, it is definitely hard! I plan to clear one of my days just to finish as many library books as possible. Rinji, you're lucky you've got chores atm. I wish I only had chores to worry about!

message 41: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yeah. I know. I can't wait to have school work though too. I want to start school. Lol.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Almost there! You start next month right? I've already started and I can feel myself getting busy *nervously excited and yet terrified of the work coming!*

message 43: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yeah, September 28th.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
End of next month, still a while to go! No wonder you crave school work haha.

message 45: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yup.

message 46: by Rinji (new)

Rinji | 490 comments Yay. I have finished this book. It was really really good. Though I think Sophia needed to have a better ending than what was given her. Oh well, it was a good book and I would recommend this book to others and would read this again.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} | 1046 comments Mod
Oh nice! I'm starting to read this, albeit slowly because of a heavy reading load, but still! It's a pretty big book but it reads pretty easily, though the writing doesn't entirely suck me into the world--1899 New York, and despite the descriptions, I still find it a little difficult to visualise, but it's actually pretty good so far. Not like overwhelmingly fantastic--but I'm a bit biased because I've still got a book hangover from reading Vicious.

The stories of the Golem's journey from here on out interests me, and I get a feeling, an odd feeling about this book. I can't put my finger on it, but the style of narration and the storyline itself feels familiar, like perhaps it has the feel of an old middle eastern/mediterranean/foreign folk tale feeling to it?
