Leila Summers (leilasummers) | 43 comments Hello new friends and welcome... please feel free to tell us a little about yourself and your writing! This group is all about connections.

Leila Summers (leilasummers) | 43 comments I'm Leila Summers. I published my first memoir in 2011. For the past few years I've been working very slowly on my second memoir, which is about my journey out of grief and into discovering myself. I hope to finish it one day! I am close to becoming a fully certified life coach and am also busy writing some short self-help ebooks on topics of the workshops that I run. I'd love to meet more like-minded writers.

AH Hey, I'm a simple student who want to be a translator in the future. I'm from Venezuela, I love writing, reading, and drawing, I hope that I can meet some friends in here.
I'm 15 years old, I like sushi, my favorite books are the ones that I can imagine everything, including the voices of the characters in my head, my favorite author are the ones that in the text can tell me who they are.

This group is for authors who have written or are writing self-help books. Unfortunately, I'm going to remove your membership. But I wish you well in all your endeavors!

Julia | 2 comments Hello, and thank you for starting this group. I am excited about meeting some like-minded memoir writers I can support and learn from as we make this journey together.

A few years ago I took a trip across the U.S. to visit all my Facebook friends in person with the "simple plan" to write a book about my travels and experiences. Thank God for naiveté, had I known how challenging it would be, I might not have had all the life-changing experiences I did.

As it turns out, my experiences led to a completely different narrative than I anticipated. I expected to write a book about travel stories and commentary on face-to-face relationships in the age of social networking, but the trip became a spiritual journey that challenged my assumptions about my past and who I was becoming, one visit at a time.

Writing this book has been uniquely challenging. Pesky things like perfectionism, procrastination, and discomfort with self disclosure have paved the walls of writer's block, but I refuse to give up.

I look forward to meeting other writers and hearing about your experiences as we take the leap into the noble craft of writing the spiritual memoir.

Millen Livis (millenlivis) | 33 comments Hi Leila and Julia! So exciting to meet like-minded authors here on Goodreads.

I have already written three books in the Dare to Change Life series (self-help) and am busy writing my fourth book. I self-published them in a mini-book format for my clients and workshops but they have never been available on Amazon. I will only publish the first one in ebook format on Amazon in September, and then the others after that. I have a lot to do in the meantime with regards to establishing my ‘author platform’ and working with social media etc. There is quite a bit more to a book launch than I knew about! Hoping to get some ideas and support from this group.

All the best with both of your books - they seem like worthwhile projects so don't give up!

Best,
Millen

Kara Lane | 6 comments Hi Leila and other authors. I have published 2 books so far that pertain to the interests of this group. The first self-help book I wrote is Wake Up to Powerful Living: 12 Principles to Transform Your Life! and the second is Simoni's Gift: A Story about Your Purpose in Life. It's nice to be part of a group with such a positive focus. :)

Hi Millen and welcome to this group. I started it because I couldn't find a group like it that I wanted to join! All the best with publishing your book in September. Let us know if we can do anything to help you!

Oh, and what is your book about?
Kindest,
Leila

Hi Kara, nice to meet you! Your two books sound awesome. Are you planning on writing any more? I am also excited about this group and how we can support each other while keeping it authentic, positive and uplifting :)
Look forward to getting to know you more.

Welcome to the group Julia and thanks for joining! Your trip sounds fascinating and I look forward to reading about it. Sometimes the hardest times in our lives transform us the most!

I'm hoping this group inspires me to continue with my writing which I hardly seem to find time for these days. It's usually when I climb into bed at night that perfect lines and fabulous ideas start running through my head, but I'm too exhausted to turn on the light and write them down. So that's where they live at the moment :)

Kindest,
Leila

Millen Livis (millenlivis) | 33 comments Leila, you asked about my book. Here's a little more about it:

A Shift Toward Purpose: Your Guide to an Amazing Career by Millen Livis (Dare To Change Life Series)
Do you want to find work that makes your heart sing? A lot of people these days are looking for purpose and meaning in their lives. The misalignment between their work and their true desires, interests and values leads to feeling stuck, unmotivated and even sick. If you are unhappy with your job right now and are longing for work that is aligned with your passions, talents and values… work that brings joy, excitement and prosperity – this book is for you!

Kate Walter (katewalter) | 9 comments Hi, My debut memoir Looking for a Kiss: A Chronicle
of Downtown Heartbreak and Healing by Kate Walter came out last month from Heliotrope Books. Worked on this many years. Some of it was first published as personal essays. It describes the painful ending of my 26 year lesbian relationship before my state had same sex marriage and then describes how I healed myself from the heartache. Now I'm in publicity/promotion mode. Kate

Kate Walter (katewalter) | 9 comments Hi Millen, The promotion is fun but exhausting. I did 5 events in June and have 3 this month. Got some good local press but want to break out nationally.

My suggestions- use all your connections & network
like mad and follow up. I also hired an assistant
to help with mailings, etc. This is ongoing.
Kate

Julia | 2 comments Hello all. I just heard Kate's interview podcast, where she discusses all phases of writing her first memoir, Looking For A Kiss. Quite amazing stuff here about taking your story from the beginning stages to having it take shape and grow legs. She also discusses working with editors and publishers and crafting a marketable final draft. Give it a listen:

Gary Green | 2 comments Greetings all. I have written 2 books that fall in this category. In Pursuit of Joy is the story of my recovery from depression and alcoholism. in it I talk about the spiritual lessons I learned along the way that I think apply to everybody. The Mindful Lifestyle teaches mindfulness practices with the idea that mindfulness is more than something you do for a few minutes a day. It can be a lifestyle choice. I am looking forward to getting to know you all and hopefully we can learn from each other.

Barry Schweiger | 5 comments Leila - thank you for starting and moderating this GR page (GR also are the initials for a favorite canine). Many have traveled a tortuous road of pain and sorrow and destruction - yet survived and grew. During our years of renewal writing is both cathartic and instructive, and in our writing is it a memoir or guide? Both are valid, and memoir may be a guide. Clarity as to one's purpose is essential for a successful book.

Alison E. (alisonbuehler) | 4 comments So happy to find you all! My book Women's Wellness just got a publishing contract. I am approaching female health from a mind/body/spirit approach. I can't wait to read some of your work.
If any of you are interested in writing a guest blog for me on The a Healing Wall. Please let me know. I am looking for posts on stories of personal healing. You can post a link to your book, website, twitter on the blog. Thanks!

Kara, interesting question and one I haven't really ever thought about. I like to read about topics I am interested in, not necessarily topics that I am an expert at or would write about. But my favorite books to read are non-fiction and memoir and those are what I write. So generally speaking, I do read what I write :)

Barry Schweiger | 5 comments Spirit - body: not different or separate but together. And Yes, the spirit body is not only read but written: Shamanistic, mystical, paranormal stories.

message 38: by Kara (new)

Kara Lane | 6 comments Thanks for responding Leila and Barry. I read & write about self-improvement, spirituality, and how-to/advice. I read but don't write thrillers & other types of fiction.

message 39: by Barry (new)

Barry Schweiger | 5 comments Currently I am reading/studying "The Shamaan's doorway" by Steven Larsen. Both an inquiry and a synthesis, extremely enlarging to one's understanding of Shamanistic way of living and its applicability to one's own way of living.

Share the book(s) you are reading?

Kara Lane | 6 comments Sounds interesting, Barry. Currently, I am re-reading The Dhammapada

Either way, I enjoy following all your comments.

I've messaged some of you about your books. I look forward to being a part of this group.

Hi Everyone, I'm finally committed to understanding and using Goodreads! Thanks for being here. I'm a holistic business coach and writer. I've authored two books, 1 called Soul Messages, which has a set of cards that goes with it. Soul Messages: Lavish Love Notes for the Soul are 50 loving messages from the universe to you. They are popular with holistic practitioners and workshop leaders, as well as individuals as an adjunct to their spiritual practice. My other book is a book of poems called To Whom It May Concern: Prayers Without the G-Word. Currently I'm working on my third, titled, "Love Yourself Forward: Because There's More to Life Than Surviving and More to You Than Anybody Knows." I am also currently developing a program as part of my coaching business that will take someone from idea to finished manuscript in 6 months, for writing self-help, personal growth, how-to and memoir. I'm happy to be here and looking forward to getting to know each of you and your work. Thanks again.

Kiran Prasad (kiranprasad) | 4 comments Hi, I'm Kiran Prasad, a new self-help author. My book "A Mindful Move: Feel at home again" just got released this week on Kindle ebook (paperback to follow in a few days). My book is for anyone moving for the first time or going through a difficult move. It will help people overcome the emotional effects of relocating and to understand the psychological impact. At the heart of it is a spiritual message that our true home is inside of ourselves. My book is based on my experience of moving 29 times, the moves of 30 people I interviewed, and on expert research.

"A Mindful Move" is free to download now until midnight on February 17. Here's the link

Matthew Murphy | 3 comments HI everyone,

I am new to Good Reads. Any fellow partner in crime authors want to be friends hit me up. :-)

First time author here. I had a faith based healing and alternative remedies to overcome my incurable illness so I was inspired to write my path to health.

My favorite authors are Taylor Caldwell for fiction and Emmet Fox for nonfiction "mind-body-spirit".

Any suggestions or assistance from the experienced group would be appreciated?

Happy Readings!

Matthew
