Melissa Craven Hi everyone and thank you for your interest in Indie Only!

We are a read and review group for independently published books. But our goal is a little different than most groups. We are not just reviewing indie books, we are vetting them as well. The goal is to create a list of only the best indie books out there.

To do that, each book from our list will be reviewed four times in the normal way. But each reviewer will also be asked to submit (to me in a private message) a confidential rating based on the following:

(rating on a quarter star system)
Overall impression of the book (plot)
Writing style (professional and well developed)
Editing (polished and cohesive)
Character development (well rounded characters)
Cover design (Come on, we totally judge books by the cover!)

This information will not be shared with the author and it should be 100% honest.
Scores will be averaged and if your book rates 3.75 or higher, you will be added to our group bookshelf as a QUALITY indie book. (we are also working toward building a Listopia list.)

Authors, your book will stay on the list until it has received four reviews. (see submission guidelines to add your book.) If your book is not garnering attention, it will be removed and replaced with a new title to keep the list fresh.

Authors, you are not required to review other books, but it is very helpful when you can pay it forward. I do ask that you help us by inviting new readers and bloggers to the group.

Readers and bloggers may choose from the list and contact the author for a copy of the book. Reviews should be posted on GoodReads and Amazon and a link submitted here (just like every other R&R group out there.) And then PM me with your private rating.

For this to be a successful endeavor, authors will need to work together to bring new readers to our group and the listopia lists we will be creating together.

The rules are likely to evolve as I work to figure out the best way to do this, but the end goal will always be the same--to compile a list of the very best indie books we can find.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Jeffrey Collyer | 9 comments Sounds like a great process, Melissa. Let's hope it takes off!

S.J. Higgins Sounds great Melissa.

Venus Morales (authorvenusmorales) | 3 comments Sounds good, I'm okay with honest reviews but my only thing is when people become rude. Is there any way to let people know they should not be rude.

Marie (naturechild02) Yes, rude reviews are not only hurtful but not at all progressive. Telling an author "your book sucks" does in no way help them to actually grow as a writer.

I also think it should be "suggested" that reviewers not try to read a book outside of their comfort zone. If you usually read romance, you probably should not be reviewing a military sci-fi.

Hi Melissa

I am very new to Goodreads and still struggling with some of the mechanics.

How do I message you? Presumably a comment to this thread is not a good way of sending you private ratings.

How do I message an author to request a book?

Thanks.

Jeffrey Collyer | 9 comments Hi Andrew

If you click on the person's name it should take you to their Goodreads page, where there is an option to send a message.

Thank you. I have been using computers at work for what feels like several million years but the architecture here is more fluid

Jeffrey Collyer | 9 comments No worries. I haven't been on Goodreads long and still get frustrated when I can't find a button I know *must* be there somewhere....

Please Pass the Books (pleasepassthebooks) In line with what Maria and Venus have said, I have a general rule that if an author provides me directly with their book on a read-to-review basis, I will not publicly post 1 and 2 star ratings and reviews. Instead, I will send my feedback privately to the author. If it is 3, I will send the author my review and ask if they would like it posted. With 4 or 5 stars, I post the review publicly automatically. I am not an author, just a reviewer.

This does not apply to books I purchase with my own money or books provided by publishers or through review organizations (Net Galley, Readers' Favorite, etc).
