David Hambling While I thought it was an amusing twist (pun intended) having someone stabbed with a corkscrew buy an alcoholic, it doesn't seem physically possible to kill someone in this way.
As far as I can tell from google, the only corkscrew murders have involved a corkscrew through the skull (which clearly takes a lot of strength) and through the chest (again, a certain amount of strength and luck).

I can't see how you you could kill someone through the neck - it has not cutting edge, so you can't sever the jugular or other major blood vessel, so what's cause of death? With a blunt injury you can crush the trachea, but that doesn't seem feasible here.

I would have preferred the victim to have been hot by a train, as that could have been engineered easily enough within the plot, as written it did not make sense -- a kitchen knife rather than a corkscrew would have worked way better.

Tanya Harrison I can see it happening. It has a very sharp end. People puncture the trachea all of the time to give a tracheotomy.

I thought it was a clever way to kill the antagonist off. Perhaps a baseball bat would have been better. Anyone who treats women or people the way he did deserved a painful death. A baseball bat might have been better in my opinion.

Agree he's nasty and she clearly enjoyed killing him. But picturing the trachea isn't that dangerous -- as you say, it happens in tracheotomy.
Not many baseball bats around, but if she had used an empty champagne bottle (good and heavy) it would have kept the irony

I agree I didn't like how he was killed by the corkscrew, and thought he would have survived. But at the very end when I read that Anna had twisted it in further to make sure he wouldn't survive was a little more believable. I didn't even think about him getting hit by a train, that would have been a great way to kill him. He could have been on the tracks looking for Megan's phone that Anna tossed over the fence. That would have been great.

...and the last thing he sees is the female train driver. Which would link in with the title...

Twisting the corkscrew in wouldn't make it much more likely to kill, but if you managed to get it through the vertebrae maybe he could be paralysed which would be almost as good if legally messy.

Vicki Renee Anyone question Rachel's sudden martial arts skills when she stomped Tom's foot and then cracked his nose with her knee??? When did she get so tough?? Seemed out of character for her given her past encounters and "being scared" as she walked alone.

Vicki Renee Any one else get irritated with the lack of fans or air conditioning during those hot days??? I was like "buy a fan already!"

Vicki Renee DID the therapist tell the police about the baby's remains?

David Hambling Vicki Renee wrote: "Anyone question Rachel's sudden martial arts skills when she stomped Tom's foot and then cracked his nose with her knee???"

I think at that point we entered the writer's fantasy revenge on her ex.
Not only did she suddenly have martial arts skills, at that point she didn't use the weapon which she had gone to so much effort to get...must have been a bit inconvenient having it in one hand...

David Hambling Vicki Renee wrote: "DID the therapist tell the police about the baby's remains?"

Well, he was the only one who knew...or was he?

Vicki Renee Mac, her lover, knew but he died of an overdose it was revealed. I just thought I read that the therapist had not told the police but obviously he must have.

Thanks

sublimosa We don't know what she told Scott so we don't know who let it slip to the newspaper. We know she told Scott some information but we don't know if she told all or only part.
We know Kamal knows all but it seems unlikely he would go to the papers.

I think it could be done by shredding the jugular. Yikes - sounds like a grim death, but when that's all you have to work with . . .

I'm still dubious. And why not use a knife -- aren't there any in the kitchen? She could have grabbed one easily enough after the Kung Fu bit.

You've got at least 5 major vessels just below the skin (2 carotids, 2 jugulars, 1 innominate artery). All you need is a puncture. Perhaps the choice of a corkscrew was meant to be ironic...useful for something else than what she usually uses it for (to get smashed)?

Yes, hence my comment at the top -- I assume that was why she picked it. But in the real world, I can't find any cases of fatal stabbings in the throat with a corkscrew, only the head and chest cases (which takes a lot of strength).

The "Boyfriend jailed after drilling corkscrew into his lover's neck " did not succeed in killing her --

So, doubtful.
