Apologies. I was just curious. Given that I've been a nerd since my mother sat me down to watch a cool new tv show in 1966 when I was 5 ...

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5198 comments ^ :) Beat me to it! I was taken to 2001 as a five year old in 1969. Let's just say it took me a few more years to understand it.

I read the book version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I've never seen the movie.

Honestly, I didn't love either one but the movie version is more interesting (though it's probably not worth watching unless in a theater or on a huge TV)

S. K. Pentecost | 36 comments I'm in the shame=things I've always thought I should have read/watched/played to keep my nerd card valid camp.

* I have never owned sea monkeys.

* I thought police call boxes were real things.

* learned basic programming language back in the apple IIe days, but didn't get my own email account until You've Got Mail was already out on video.

* feel a little guilty for not objectifying 7 of 9 as much as I should have

That DOES explain the ending! There were bits of it that I liked, bits of it that, frankly, bored me, and then there was that ending and I thought 'huh, all that talk of Hal, yet no one warned me about this craziness!'

Police Call boxes WERE real things. There also used to be black and yellow ones belonging to the Automobile Association.

Here's a link to some pics of one of the still surviving ones in Scotland. (Half way down the page)

My shame:
Never liked Star Wars or Firefly.

You can be a nerd and not like nerdy things trying too hard to be anti-nerdy in itself is nerdy.

Dwayne Caldwell | 141 comments I think H.G. Wells and Phillip K. Dick's ideas are great but honestly, I think their writing is incredibly boring.

I love H.G Wells, but his non fiction for instance his History of the World, great book, very hard to get nowdays, I had an original early 20th century copy from my grandfather.

I've come to realize that I don't understand it and likely never will but I can also say "I grok it" ... ;-P

message 69: by Jim (new)

Jim Heivilin | 45 comments Dang a lot of people bagging on things that are by many (including me) considered to be classically nerdy. But I don't see a lot of shame exhibited by those denigrating.

I thought this was a thread about nerdy things we were ashamed for not liking.

The Outline of History is freely available on Project Gutenberg and Ebooks@Adelaide. Both of my go-to places for e-books. Both also have A Short History of the World.
