Hi Sonia - great to hear from you. All it needs to read a shared book is for a few people to decide that's what they would like to do and we can set it up.
Anyone interested - and any nominations?
Carol (DrMama)just posted a very interesting commente about the work of Virginia Bailey - that might be a good starting point? We could set it up for an August read and then talk about it early in September? Perhaps choose a date and all come on to share thoughts? What do you say?

No need to rush - we could just as easily read a shared book in September and have a discssion in October.
What do others think?

Very belatedly, I'd like to add my support to this idea. I have no excuse for my tardiness, other than to say that with so many threads on so many book sites, it's impossible to read them all without spending one's entire life on the internet.
I did post something a while ago about wanting to read the same book as others and discuss it online. Not sure what's involved on coordinating this, but I'm willing to give it a go. So, who's up for it? Not sure how to select a book, but perhaps we could start by comparing Want to read lists?Wendy
Hi Wendy. I suppose that if, say, half-a-dozen of us are interested we could all suggest a book and we could then have a vote to pick one.

You and me makes 2. The previous comments in this tread were a while ago, but I'll get in touch with the people to see if they are still interested. Watch this space!

Hi! I'm not very familiar with discussing things on Good Reads so not sure how visible this comment will be - will see when I hit the Post button! Me and BJ are keen to read the same book. Sue and Sonia were interested a while ago and you too Ian? How about we each nominate a book to share and take a vote on the suggested titles?

Sounds like a plan Wendy. It is really easy to do a group poll on Goodreads - see top right menu - (but I can help you with it if needed) so if everyone sends you a book name and you want to use a poll people can vote; or if there are only a small number we can do it more easily just through messages.
My suggestion - though only because I keep hearing it mentioned -
I will also post on FB to say that we are going to do this and, taking BJs suggestion, say that this is exclusive to the Goodreads pages and encourage people to join us here too. What are we thinking? Nominate and choose a book in the next week, read it in November and then choose a date in December to discuss? Discuss how - comments as and when after a completion date (to avoid spoilers) or pick a specific evening and all post together?

I have seen the film 'Secret Life of Bees', enjoyable film. Don't mind reading the book of a film. I've got a copy of 'Drive' by James Sallis lined up to read as I'm a fan of the film....

Looks like a lively read!

May I suggest that in the poll we're not allowed to vote for our own suggestion? Otherwise I can foresee the situation where each book receives one vote and we're no further forward. ;-)

Sounds good to me

William Boyd has long been one of my favourite authors, but one of his books, The Blue Afternoon, had passed me by until I spotted it in our local library at the weekend. That will be my suggestion for the first group shared read.

I've not read him at all and am very happy to try him, or anyone else out. I wait with interest to see what book is chosen.

Ian, his Any Human Heart is stunning and I'd recommend that you start your Boyd reading with that one - but as I've already read it I'm going to stick with the other one as my suggested group read.

Thanks BJ - added to my list!

Any Human Heart was adapted for TV. It starred Matthew Macfadyen and Jim Broadbent, amongst others. Did anyone see it?
Yes. I enjoyed it - which often isn't the case if I've read a book first and then see the film/tv serialisation. That may be because Boyd wrote the screenplay and, presumably, made sure it captured the essence of his book. An acting masterclass by Jim Broadbent who captured the attention - even in those episodes where he didn't speak! What did you think of it, Roslyn?
Ahh, I didn't realise Boyd had written the screenplay. I did enjoy it, Logan Mountstuart seemed more likeable than he was in the book. You can never get as deep in a film or,even a series, as reading the book; unless you have a very talented director and editor. I'm watching 'The Last Kingdom', adapted from Bernard Cornwells' novels with interest at the moment. I get a bit irritated when they change things for convenience sake,a couple that stand out for me is when they refer to 'England'-it did not exist as such then and they're wearing trousers which didn't exist then either! Otherwise I'm enjoying what I've seen so far....
Me, too - and I'm finding the same things irritating. Alfred is exactly as I'd imagined him. but I'm not yet convinced by Uhtred.
So far I think we have The Secret Life of Bees, Drive and The Blue Afternoon. May I suggest a deadline of, say, noon tomorrow for further suggestions?

Apologies for being absent from this conversation for a while. Bad week- poorly cat. Won't complicate things by adding another title as the 3 suggestions so far are all goodies. Noon tomorrow then!Wendy

Hi, Ian. I've ploughed on and set up the poll. If you wanted it doing in any other way just let me know and I'll change it.

In the last day or two somebody (Sue?) suggested that some members might like to read a shared book and specifically discuss that. Carol has mentioned this before as sometehignthat she woudl like to do. We didn't set this group up with a requirement to read a set book but we always said if that was what some people wanted to do we could evolve that option.
So, I would like to a) test whether there would be interest in such a development and b) ask if someone would be willing to take responsibility for co-ordinating that aspect of the book club if so
For myself, I would be interested to do so from time to time (as I do enjoy discussing different perspectives on a book read in commmon) but probably not every month, but it only takes at least two of you to want to do so and we would have a new dimension to the book club.
Thoughts?
