message 4: by Grace Meredith (new)

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) I have a variety of libraries to choose from, most of them in walking distance. For books, it's mostly Amazon and thrift shop finds.

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) IKR? Once I found the entire Twilight series brand new at a thrift shop. It cost me $3!

message 8: by Mehsi (last edited Jun 25, 2015 10:32AM) (new)

Mehsi For English books > Amazon.de (as book stores here don't really have many English books and they are often overpriced) and sometimes miraculously the libraries will have English books I want (but this is quite rare).
For Dutch books > Either one of my 3 libraries (I have one in the city I live in, one in the town next to that, and one in the city next to that one, and it is not that expensive. I pay the full price at one library, get a special pass that is valid in my province with which I can get a subscription (and which that is depends per library) at any library in the province for only 5 euros and voilà done. :)) or the book store. Depends on how much I love the author.

message 9: by Jc (new)

Jc (Teenagedreambooks) | 153 comments Wow, so do you like get a library card?

message 10: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi Yep. In each library you get the library pass that is associated with that library. So I have 3 library cards in my wallet now + that province pass (though I don't need it until the time that the membership/subscription is running out and I need to extend things). Luckily they all are different (one is red, one has a cartoon drawing of little kids and the other one has a picture of that city on it and the province pass is blue with the symbol of the province on it).

Mehsi Yep. I was delighted when I found it out 2 years ago. The library in my city is really expensive and you can't borrow a lot (6 books max), so I was happy to see I could still be there but for a cheaper price. My main library (the one I pay the full price for) is in the town next to me, they allow me to borrow 15 books and they are quite a bit cheaper than the library in my city. :)

message 13: by Jc (new)

Jc (Teenagedreambooks) | 153 comments Do you have to pay to borrow books?

message 14: by Mehsi (last edited Jun 25, 2015 10:59AM) (new)

Mehsi As long as I have/pay for the membership/subscription, nope. If I want to reserve/put books on hold, that depends per library. One library is free, the other is €0.50 and the other is €1.50 (and that is the one library were I never reserve books any more, I used to, back when they were still €0.50). Of course if you are too late you still have fees and such, which also depend in price per library.

message 15: by Jc (new)

Jc (Teenagedreambooks) | 153 comments Oh, makes since. Thanks!! That's how it is here.

message 16: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi You're welcome, ah, your library has the same kind of system? Nice! Always nice to see that libraries have the same kind of systems.

message 17: by Jc (new)

Jc (Teenagedreambooks) | 153 comments I know right?

message 18: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi Yep! :) Though I have to wonder how long that library in my city will be there. They aren't doing all right. :\

message 19: by Jc (new)

Jc (Teenagedreambooks) | 153 comments That's not good :{

message 20: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi It is really a shame. :( I just hope they will be able to push through. It would be too bad if it had to close or leave or shrink so that they can exist for a bit longer.

Tashy Jones | 821 comments I never heard of a library charging before. You get one card and that works for your county here.
I usually go to Waterstones, or if I'm feeling cheap pop into The Works and see if they have something. I use book depository or Amazon online

message 24: by Mehsi (last edited Jun 28, 2015 11:56AM) (new)

Mehsi I have heard they are working on a country-wide pass here, how it will work, no clue. Not much is clear about it, though I heard rumours that one side will work at a library near you and the other side will be used for the other libraries elsewhere. The rest of the system is rumoured to work the same as now, you need to bring back the books back to the library where you got them from.

I hope it won't be expensive. *crosses fingers* Though given I pay around 40 to 60 a year for libraries (one main one, 1 for 5 euro and another for 5 euro, both of those thanks to the province pass), I don't think it can get much more expensive. :) But you never know, the libraries do need money.

message 25: by Cherry (new)

Cherry | 60 comments Half-Price Books and Barnes & Noble for buying. Sometimes Amazon, but I get impatient with shipping... and I also have terrible luck with shipping as well.

I'm fortunate that our local library has several branches so they have most books I want!

message 26: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Mehsi, I have never had to pay for a library card. The only time we have to pay is if we don't return them on time. That cost me 25 cents per day if late. IF my library doesn't have the book and they have to order the book from our "Link +" system then the book is $1 per late day. IF I lose a book from my library I have to pay the cost of the book. If I lose a Link + book I have to pay $115. YES! So far, thank God, I have never lost a book.

Do you pay per card for life, per year, or how does that work? Is what you pay very much? I don't know euros.

Paying for card is per year, that money is sadly needed here. Libraries are slowly disappearing and they could use the money.

What I pay is the normal (at least around this age) price, from what I know from moving around quite a bit, 40 to 60 euro is a normal price for an adult library pass, at least these days. :( I still think it is a bit high, as it doesn't really motivate people to go to the library (I have had several people who just decided to not go any more).
Especially since not all the libraries have free passes for kids. I know the library in my city has a price for kids passes. So yeah, I can imagine that people might turn away. 13 euro per kid + your own pass (around 49 euro so you can at least get a few books a time), and imagine that some people have 2 or 3 kids, that will get you to almost 100 euro a year for library stuff, and you can barely get any books. :\
Still I love libraries and I will keep going to them, but I do hope it won't get more expensive then this and I hope the special province pass I have will stay, because if those things happen I guess I will just leave and not go to libraries any more. :\

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Mehsi, do you have to purchase most of your books then because you read a lot!

message 29: by Ruth Noemi (new)

Ruth Noemi Rojas (httpwwwgoodreadscomcollinss66) | 341 comments My local County library, the local regional library and then this store near me called Hastings. None are within walking distance, but I make it work.

Mehsi Vicki wrote: "Mehsi, do you have to purchase most of your books then because you read a lot!"

Considering the libraries here barely have English books, I need to buy most of my books as I read mostly English books. I just wish my libraries had more English books (especially YA and children's books).

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Wow, Mehsi! That must be so difficult for you! Yet you read tons of books! You must be resourceful! LOL

message 32: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (caitlinvautour) for my library to get a library card for the first time its free. if you loose it you have to pay a dollar. and it's free to take stuff out. that's how it for most librarys here. if it's late u pay a fine

message 33: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi Vicki wrote: "Wow, Mehsi! That must be so difficult for you! Yet you read tons of books! You must be resourceful! LOL"

Yeah, it is at times a bit difficult, and also frustrating, but I am quite resourceful and almost always find a way to find a book I want to read. :)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) Chapters!!!

message 35: by Jayat (new)

Jayat Gonzalez There are no actual bookstores or libraries where I live :( , so I pretty much buy every book I read. I often buy from BookOutlet (since it's the cheapest lol) or Books-A-Million every now and then :)

message 36: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (friendtobooks04) | 105 comments There are several libraries that I go to, but the one I go to the most is within walking distance. Books-A-Million and used bookstores are my favorite, but the only bookstore around me is Barnes and Noble.

message 37: by Jessie (Saffity) (new)

Jessie (Saffity) (saffity) My local library is Cambridge Library & Galleries, I connect to them through Overdrive and love the fact that I don't have to remember to return books and don't rack up late fees.

The sucky thing is they don't always have to books I'm looking for (or only have the first couple books in a series) or long hold lines that then give ALL THE BOOKS at the same time.

message 38: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Burley | 29 comments Chapters, Kobo Books, Amazon, sometimes Walmart if they have what I'm looking for.

message 39: by s.shadereads (new)

s.shadereads I mostly Amazon shop for my books. :)

message 40: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (yerawizardamanda) I mostly buy my books off Amazon or ThriftBooks but I go to a store its Walmart if I'm home (as its only one) or Barnes and Noble if I drive an hour for shopping. I have a membership there so I buy all my new releases there.

message 41: by LilyCat (last edited Apr 03, 2016 01:26PM) (new)

LilyCat (lilycat_reads) | 27 comments I either go to the library or get them at the second hand book store really cheap. I don't like buying them new, because I'm scared if I don't like it, it will be a waste of money. (There are a bunch of books I've read where I was like, whew, so glad I didn't buy that one!) Five new hardcovers can easily put you over $100.

message 42: by Dana (new)

Dana (harmonyslovehp) | 264 comments I like to go to Books a Million. Sometimes you can find some really good buys in their bargain section and they have cheap prices on their classics. Overall, I think their prices are the same as any other bookstore, but I just love their bargain section. :)
