Savannah Scarlett is my romance name....but I prefer the granny one. If I ever wrote children's books, I would seriously consider Edna Lillian Poppymuffin as a character.

That sounds like the title of a romance. LOL

Lorien | 427 comments In more somber news, we were just talking about supporting local bookstores over Amazon, on the Mad about Series thread.

But this news sucks,

Lorien | 427 comments I guess the actions of the management have shown little intent to really revive the business either. They are just increasing cash on hand to pay stockholders and the higher ups. Then they'll let it die, with little to no support for it's thousands of employees.

That is usually what happens. I've been in a situation just like that...did not care for its employees as long as the higher ups get $$...Sad indeed.

My nearest B&N is 50 min away, maybe more. This is just sad. We need more indie bookstores to open like "The Ripped Bodice" in Southern California where they only sell romance. I'd love to visit it.

message 319: by Lorien (new)

Lorien | 427 comments I often day dream about opening a Ripped Bodice like store here in MN.

I do like bookstores, but I didn't really grow up with any nearby. If I bought a book, it came from Walmart. However, the environmentalist in me and the need to try and control the amount of physical clutter makes me avoid print books whenever possible. I didn't really buy books before, except on the very rare occasion or perhaps second hand. Libraries were my scene, and because my home town library was tiny and basically only had retired books from bigger libraries, so I would try to find only series that were complete or I would stick to classics.

That is awful. We don’t have B&N, but I read about it. If book giants like them are cutting costs, no wonder the smaller stores are closing up businesses.

message 322: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) | 2701 comments Yeah our town only has one bookshop now. Used to have three. The big department stores sell all the latest paperbacks heavily discounted, so it's pretty hard for them to compete with that, let alone electronic books.

The two BN stores that were in my city closed a couple of years ago leaving only a couple of BN stores in the suburbs and are inaccessible via public transportation.

message 324: by Mariana (new)

Mariana | 2692 comments I live in a suburb of Dallas, Texas. We have a Barnes & Nobles, a Half Price Books, and a locally owned used book store. It is really nice to have many options where I can pick up a paper copy conveniently close to home; but my library is so good, I rarely have to. My bookshelves at home are full, and I prefer to purchase electronic now.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments Lorien wrote: "I guess the actions of the management have shown little intent to really revive the business either. They are just increasing cash on hand to pay stockholders and the higher ups. Then they'll let i..."

From the article, it seems as if they are getting rid of the people whom I used to see in the store to promote and assist with the Nook.

Is this the demise of the Nook if BN isn’t going to have staff to support it?

I can’t see BN haveing the type of phone-based tech support for Nook owners as Amazon has for kindle-users.

Will this kill the Nook?

Missy | 1485 comments When I started reading for a hobby again, I bought several HR books. I don't usually reread them, so I end up donating them to the public library. That's when I decided to switch over to Kindle versions. I do miss holding an actual book in my hands though and seeing the pretty front and back covers.

On different note, has anyone watched the documentary Pride and Prejudice: Having a Ball, where they recreate the Netherfield ball? The new thing I learned was that ball goers bring a change of shoes, fashionable ones and dancing ones. That's something I haven't read in any HR yet.

This looks interesting thanx for sharing.

I've found I don't mind e-books, but I don't prefer it, unless it's dark and it's the only way I can read. Completely a first world problem, but I find my iPad to heavy to read on for more than an hour or so at a time. .

I find the same thing with my iPad Lorien. It's awkward and too heavy to read on for me so I rarely do it. I much prefer reading on my kindle. Small, neat, lightweight, and has its own light! And nearly my whole library of books! I sound like a walking advert for kindle but in fact I love it. I'm a total convert.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments I read eBooks on my iPhone.

It’s perfect reading while I lie down. My favorite reading posture if I’m at home!

Although the iPhone is obviously smaller than an eReader or an iPad, the text is adjustable to any size that is comfortable. I keep the background black and turn down the contrast to the text to a dim gray.

message 331: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 348 comments I'm in the minority, I love my ipad, but it's encased in a thick squishy green frame with a handle that bends so I can prop it up. It's actually a little kids cover for an ipad LOL. My husband bought it for me because it was green and I like green. I prop the handle on my lap against my knees and I can lie down and read.

But I am not opposed to a kindle, I just don't have one. I read on my kindle app for KU.

All you Kindle users..... which version of kindle would you suggest? I may put it on my wish list.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments Shannon,

That’s what I use—the kindle app mostly. I have a Kobo app and an app that will allow me to read DRM eBooks.

I've never done Kobo....embarrassingly, I don't even know how it works. ;) And I'm not familiar DRM. Actually most acronyms have me searching google Hahahaha

message 334: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) | 2701 comments @Shannon. I have a fairly new kindle. Wore my old one out LOL. As I do so much reading, I lashed out and bought the top of the range, the Oasis. It's thin, lightweight and the battery lasts really well. I love it. There are cheaper options though, that many are happy with.

Priya (priyachennareddy) | 1544 comments I have an ipad and love reading on it ( though not as much as I love print books). I use Kindle app on it.

I fall asleep easier reading print, which should make me read print more, but I somehow see that as negative. Less time for reading!

My iPad is a mini, so similar in size to the eReaders, though still heavier. I also prop it up a lot.

So, yeah, not very familiar with Kobo either. What are its advantages?

Mariana | 2692 comments Nothing lets me fall asleep more quickly and listening to an audiobook with a soothing voice narrator.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) | 4120 comments Mod
Do you set a timer to turn off the audio after a certain amount of time?

message 341: by Geri (new)

Geri I fall asleep to an audiobook several times a week. I don’t set a sleep timer since I never know when I will fall asleep. So yes, sometimes I finish a book in my sleep! Fortunately, I am able to figure out what I do remember and just rewind to that point.

Sometimes at night I purposely listen to a book I find boring. That way it doesn’t matter if I fall asleep. LOL

message 342: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 348 comments After reading these posts yesterday I decided to fall asleep to my current audio read I've just started. I set the timer to a whopping 15min since I'd already done my book reading for the night. I tried not to think about it, wondering when it would turn off. It can take me a good hour to fall asleep. But I think it worked! I slept rather well. I'll have to rewind those 15min today, but that's alright by me.

@Geri....Hahahaha...falling asleep to a boring read.

Great remedy for Insomnia.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments I often go to sleep to audio books as well.

I usually turn on a book the I’ve already listened to.

I don’t want to slumber through a new-to-me book.

Hi Andrea, I asked her about her audiobook plans on Goodreads the other day. I think you can find the question and answer on her author’s page. https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

message 348: by Mariana (new)

Mariana | 2692 comments I have never used the automatic turn off timer. I'm going to do this next time and it will save me from rewinding so far.
