Oleander | 271 comments Hope your summer in Australia is wonderful and fun. It sure is winter here in the states right now.

I recently saw a notice that the Gilded Newport mystery series is going to be made into movies by Hallmark. The first one, Murder at the Breakers is going to premier in February. These are period movies and should have some romance in them too. I've read the first book and hope to get to the rest. Am looking forward to seeing the movies.

I saw two of the movies Hallmark created to Loveuary, An American in Austen and Love & Jane, I confess they didn't hit the mark. Nice but not great. I think my expectations about Jane Austen movies it's always very high, so...

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments I cannot believe that they are making another one. Lost count of how many times they have made this series. Not for me.
I thought we were going to get some more new historical romance series. When they made the Bridgertons.
These producers have No imagination. If they still keep going back to the classics. Which they will probably ruin by going away from a proper historical context.

I agree. Let's see some new HR series from some of our fav writers' books, like Lisa Kleypas or Eloisa James or Jennifer Ashley etc. I did not enjoy the 2022 movie version of Persuasion. Let's see something new!

I also didn't like the 2022's version of Persuasion... :-|

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments I watch Persuasion, turned it off after about 20 minutes. Utter rubbish.
If they are doing historical it needs to be historical 🙄🤷‍♀️

Debby *BabyDee* | 812 comments I agree with you all. There should be more HRs on the screen but writers are not using creative minds. Just saw a preview for remake of Mr & Mrs Smith and Shogun. Remakes 😴🤷🏾‍♂️

i agree! great point!
i get that Austen & the Brontes are classics but there are sooo many other books that I think we contemporaries feel are classics for our generation.

GoodReads publish a list 108 New Romance Recommendations for (Nearly) Every Kind of Reader

https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/2...

Here are some themes explored
- I go weak in the knees for second-chance romance
- I love a romance where the complication is TIME ITSELF
- I'd like to read a historical romance NOT set in Regency or Victorian England
- OK, but don't leave us Regency/Victorian romance readers hanging!
- I'm a sucker for a contemporary Jane Austen retelling!
- Show me some protagonists in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, please!

Seems nice to explore and had some new books to our TBR! What do you think?

So I took a chance while flicking through channels and came across Sense & Sensibility as part of the Hallmark Loveuary...why did I put myself through so much torture. 😬 Didn't care for it at all and I should have been punished 🤣

@Debby, I caught the last half of the movie. I was wondering why it was fast-paced before I realized that they have to fit as much material as they can into approximately 2 hours.

I love the accent of the actor who played Colonel Brandon. *swoons* I was more interested in his romance and wished it was the main romance in S&S.

I never understood the appeal of Edward Ferrars (Elinor's love interest). At one point, Marianne compared his choices to that of John Willoughby, so I guess that was what Jane Austen intended for Edward. Whether I liked him as the hero or not, I still got teary-eyed during the proposal scene.

This is the third adaptation of S&S that I've watched. It was okay, I guess.

@Missy..oh did forget about Col. Brandon and did love his voice. You are correct...they needed to crunch as much as they could in that small amount of time. I gess after sewing this adaptation im pretty spoined by the other two versions. 😊

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments Missy wrote: I never understood the appeal of Edward Ferrars (Elinor's love interest)."

Me either! Colonel Brandon is a much better hero. I'm not a fan of Marianne either. It would have been better if Elinor and Brandon had been the main couple. This is one of the reasons S&S is not my preferred Jane Austen book.

I believe the hallmark movies have less than 2 hours, I wonder how can they put S&S in that time period... something like, "ups, it's over..."

Debby *BabyDee* | 812 comments @Lauren...I agree, Elinor and Brandon would have made a better couple in this story and Marianne was a bit annoying. I can watch S&S but it is not my favorite. My likes the 1990's versions of Persuasion, Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Mansfield Park.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments Is anyone else having problems with the my book shelf. I keep getting an error message when trying to download it. When I do get it to load. The book I am reading is missing. This has been happening for the last 3 days.

message 1100: by Cath (new)

Cath | 370 comments Hi Shaz,

I am not having that problem but I may be using a different format.

I access it on my laptop through the Goodreads website. I don't use the app.

I am also assuming that you are talking about the "currently reading" shelf under "Book Shelves" (which is under "My Books") - that's what shows up on my website-based view.

Wish I could have been more help. Hope this gets fixed for you soon. Goodreads glitches can be so aggravating!
