🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments I would have liked to watch it. But itโ€™s on Brit box here. ๐Ÿ™I am not paying for another monthly subscription. Especially when I have already watch most of the programs already ๐Ÿ˜ก
So unless it appears at some time on ITV , Netflix or Amazon. I wonโ€™t be watching it. Very annoying , when originally it was a ITV program . ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿ˜‚

I agree. I like what they have done with this season. If only ITV hadnโ€™t canceled the show to begin with! I do miss a couple characters that were unable to return, but I am glad they didnโ€™t try to replace Sydney with a different actor. I wasnโ€™t convinced of his character anyways. He was a bit too cold.

I think it may come available on Amazon at some point. Might as well wait until season 3 is released and then binge. The wait is already getting to me ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

Missy | 1485 comments Back in 2019, the novel Mr. Malcolm's List by Suzanne Allain Mr. Malcolm's List was made into a short film (11 minutes).

Short film: https://youtu.be/5WIcqyHDuIg

On July 1, 2022, the full feature film will be coming to theaters! With some of the actors/actresses reprising their roles. The role of Julia (originally Gemma Chan) is now played by Zawe Ashton. If you watch Sanditon, then Theo James will be in the film as well.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/4ONCEOWbl4s

The trailer looks great! I can't wait to watch it! I don't know why I'm excited to see the masquerade ball.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments I have noticed that some of the new historical book covers are a bit confusing. They look like modern book reads.
If I was in a book shop, I would not pick them up to read the back page for the story line.
Bit annoying.

I agree Shaz. Some of the current cover styles don't appeal to me at all and I wouldn't pick them up in a bookshop either.

Do you mean the ones that are stylized with comic style characters on them?
Like these: A Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem (A Lady's Guide, #1) by Manda Collins
Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women, #1) by Evie Dunmore Never Fall for Your Fiancรฉe (The Merriwell Sisters, #1) by Virginia Heath

To be honest, they seem childish. I prefer the ones with actual humans on them.

Me too. I'm not really a fan of this cartoonish style. I think they are cheap and easy to design and make on a computer though. Maybe part of the reason they are so prevalent now.

I saw that part of the reason is that there was no scheduling cover shoots during Covid, so it was either use stock photos or the cartoony covers that have the benefit of being unique to the book.

Yes that does make sense. A good way to get around covid issues. I hope they go back to live models soon though. Like Lauren, I prefer realistic images of actual humans on the cover images. I love a pretty cover with a woman in a beautiful long dress and maybe a bonnet. Catches my eye every time. This kind of thing:
The Arrangement (The Survivors' Club #2) by Mary Balogh Seduce Me at Sunrise (The Hathaways, #2) by Lisa Kleypas

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments I also prefer the live models.
Do you find that sometimes the dresses are for the wrong era and the models have the wrong hair colouring ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜‚
I also prefer the book to start with a date, so I know the years the book is set in. Instead of waiting for the clues, to figure it out .๐Ÿค”

Yes, I've seen some covers with major errors like a Victorian dress for a book set in the Regency period - very different fashions.

I also like when the year is indicated so I can Google the dress styles and create an image in my head of the clothing.

I know what you mean. I have an old paperback copy of Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught. It's about a very sweet young lady in Regency times. The cover pic shows a woman in a Georgian frock and she is showing her petticoats and looks very saucy - nothing like the actual heroine. LOL.

I agree about the date thing too. It's confusing if you have no idea when it's set, and have to try to guess.

Merry (jewelhound) | 857 comments I have a question about recommending books for library purchase and how authors feel about this. I know an author wants to sell books to everyone. I recommend my max number of requests for purchase of books each month. I think it exposes readers to new authors and they may continue to follow an author on their own plus I can try out them myself to see if I like the writing style.

I have only tried to recommend books a couple times and it didnโ€™t seem to work. Maybe I didnโ€™t do it right or maybe it varies by library.

message 836: by Merry (last edited Jun 03, 2022 07:17AM) (new)

Merry (jewelhound) | 857 comments Joanna, through trial and error I have found that books published in the last year or to be published in the next 30 days are the best candidates. Virginia Heath was an author I discovered I liked and was able to get her eBooks purchased. We can submit up to 5 books per month so I look at ARC and reviews of my GR friends and suggest them. I would say I get a couple a month approved. I also see if they are available on Overdrive as I think some self-published may not be available

message 837: by Missy (last edited Jun 03, 2022 10:56PM) (new)

Missy | 1485 comments @Merry, I also discovered that books newly released are the best candidates. I don't know how many physical books we can recommend, but we can make 99 ebook/audiobook recommendations per day! ๐Ÿ˜

message 838: by Merry (new)

Merry (jewelhound) | 857 comments @Missy Wow. We are only allowed 5 of any type. I was wondering if authors "like" their books in the library. I am sure all would rather have everyone own a copy lol.

Thanks Missy. This looks good. Apparently releases on Netflix next month. The article promotes it very much as a comedy. I haven't actually read Persuasion for quite a few years, but in my memory it had a more serious tone. Perhaps I should reread before the show is released. Anyways, I'm looking forward to this new interpretation.

It along with Northanger Abbey. They were released together posthumously. Persuasion is the most romantic of her books. It is my favorite, at least by some measures.

I probably will too, but I have reservations too. I donโ€™t see it being very good but maybe I will be able to watch it on its own merit without comparing to the book or previous versions ๐Ÿคจ

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments Joanna Loves Reading wrote: "maybe I will be able to watch it on its own merit "

I hope I will be able to. The best version for me is the one with Amanda Root and Kieren Hinds although I also enjoyed the one with Rupert Penry Jones and Sally Hawkins (despite all the running around at the end which was weird).
