Trouble is, you might "have" them and not know it until they are thoroughly infesting your head.

Right, Larry, you might not. But if you go home and wash with regular soap and shampoo after being near lice you can probably get rid of them before becoming infested.
Lice actually have a harder time in hair that is really dirty, or coated with hair spray, gel, etc. They can't cling to the hair follicle, and they can't lay their eggs on them. The cleaner the hair, the more the lice thrive. As soon as you get lice from another person, you have them and they don't have to settle down and mate first, they just immediatly start laying eggs which are super hard to get rid of. The shampoos kills the lice--hopefully-but not the eggs. The eggs have to be picked out, the house and car have to be treated. It's horrible! My daughter has had them a few times, the first time she had them she had hair down past her knees. I don't know if it's because we live in Florida, but they seem a lot more common than I was in school.
Leslie, I know! I don't remember any lice infestations when I was a kid, but when Jake was in elementary school I would get notices at least a few times a year. Fortunately he never had them. Your poor girl! You had to cut her hair right?I used to be misinformed that lice were only in poor, dirty neighborhoods. That's not true at all. And soap and water do not get rid of them. It's such a pain, too, because then you have to wash EVERYTHING in the house. Beddings, carpets, gah.
I feel sorry for the lice that try to get on Kevin!!Yes, lice are horrible, spraying and treating everything. You can't brush them out, you can't kill them except with this horrible stuff you buy, not regular shampoo. My daughter is so careful now, after going through it a few times.
Actually, we didn't cut her hair because we went to a church that said women can never cut their hair, ever. So--we treated her over and over and over. It was torture. We don't go there anymore, but at the time, I really believed that church's teachings, it wasn't just because they said it, it was because I believed it. I still have long hair, but after I left, one day I cut off about 8 inches of total dead ends. It's still down to my waist. My daughter has cut her hair many times since them. She gave it to locks of love twice and now it's up by her neck. But the lice thing was horrible, really awful.
Wow! I stand corrected. I'm baffled and a bit intimidated by both of y'all's extensive lice knowledge.
It's only because we have kids, Sally. If you have kids, you too shall become intimate with lice facts.
