ABANDONED. Australian novel of boy who had whippets & a falcon/hawk

Back in the 80s when I was teenager i read a book from my school library about a young Australian man growing up in the bush. I remember that he had whippets that he hunted with and I think he also had a falcon or hawk that he trained as well. II don't remember much else - not even where it was set. I used to think I did but I had confused it with another book I'd read called "A fortunate life". have tried in vain to find it in various searches on the Internet as I'd dearly love my son to read it, but without an author or title it is a bit hard. I even tried looking through that library but to no avail. Hopefully someone here can help.

I think it was set in the early 1900s or maybe late 1800s. Can't remember anything about the cover :-(. And no, it was all real - it may have been autobiographical rather than a novel although again I may be mixing that up with "a fortunate life". For a long time I thought all the things I remembered were in "a fortunate life" but then I re-read it and found they weren't...
