Frank | 170 comments Hello all:

It has been many years since I have read comics, probably close to 40 years, when I read my older brother's books from the late 1950's into the mid 1960's. But, after watching the Guardians of the Galaxy several weeks ago, it has peaked my interest in reading this form again, as I have been a long time reader of sci-fi and fantasy, these stories fall much into these genre's.
With that I assumed it is much easier to purchase these books in Ominbus form, and coming across a chart of the Cosmic Marvel stories from 2004-2011, I thought I'd ask the expert's their opinion of this series and getting a complete background of all that was going on in the movie, characters, setting etc., as well as the rest of the story arc.
Since I am a bit of a completest, can I please get recommendations, lists and opinions on this.
Thank you.

The Lion's Share Hi Frank,

That's a long time not reading comics, welcome back! :)

Why 2004-2011?

If you'd like to read from the continuity of the movies I suggest you start with the infinity gauntlet omnibus, because the GOTG movie is loosely based on this story or thereabouts. That would be a great place to start.

I came across this chart in a search. It gave a list of stories including Annihilation, Annihilation:Conguest, War of Kings, Realm of Kings, Thanos Imperative etc.

I have looked up the Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus, it all was written much earlier. This sets up the storyline in the Cosmic Universe of Marvel?
Thanks for the response.

Welcome Frank! Cosmic Marvel is not my thing and the list Alistair gave is pretty nice.

This was just posted as well, another excellent site. It's mostly chronological and not limited to the years you mentioned but these are pretty much all the main cosmic stories from Marvel.

http://theomnibuscollector.com/post/9...

Let us know which ones you like after reading!

The Lion's Share I wouldn't limit yourself to those years Frank, there is a lot of cool stuff out there, and a lot of Marvel's cosmic stuff involves Thanos, but it is pretty good.

If you want to experience DC's cosmic stuff try the green lantern omnibuses by Geoff johns. They are good.

Start having a look and keep us updated to how you get on.

Welcome Frank. :)

I can only recommend the things I've read, of those things the ones I liked that are cosmic and stand out are:

The two Fantastic Four omnibus volumes written by Jonathan Hickman;

The Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus;

Annihilation omnibus (now out of print (OOP), I expect the follow on volume Annihilation Conquest omni to be good too but have yet to read it;

Avengers Forever (Avengers from different time periods brought together with time travel and space battles);

Avengers the Kree Skrull War (older comic but a classic).

Outside of Marvel I also enjoyed DC's Green Lantern omnibus volume 1 written by Geoff Johns. I'm not anywhere near as familar with the DC cosmic universe.

I also liked Rick Remender's Fear Agent published by Dark Horse comics. Aliens almost wipe out earth and the main character fights back. There are some good story twists and it's a stand alone comic. I bought the Library edition volumes which collect the whole run in two volumes.

InStockTrades.com has some of the best prices on the interst and they pack very well.

The Lion's Share I forgot about Fantastic Four, that's F***** brilliant!

I've got Fear agent looking forward to reading it one day. At the moment i just enjoy looking at them sat on my shelf haha

Frank | 170 comments Thank you, Alastair, Relstuart and, Blindzider for your messages, and recommendations.

I have placed an order for the Infinity Guantlet omnibus on In Stock, and Annihilation Conquest omnibus, which I will hold until I pick up the Annihilation omnibus (expensive OOP)or get the Tpb volumes. I think I may also pick up the Avengers vs. Thanos.
I will start with Avengers vs. Thanos and then into Infinity Gauntlet omnibus. Then will try to fill in from there on the other Marvel recommendations.
Hopefully, this will give me a good entrance point.

Thank you all.

You are welcome Frank. One other thing you may want to try. My local library has quite a few "Graphic Novels". Mostly newer stuff, but that's where I've been able to read things that I've been interested in but didn't want to buy (or can't find to purchase). It's worth checking out if you haven't already.

message 10: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share Another thing to note Frank; while avengers vs Thanos and the infinity gauntlet are great to read they are a little out dated compared to modern comics. Saying that, depending on opinion that can add to your enjoyment of it. I think some classics (like music) are better than modern novels.

I hope you enjoy them! :)

A bit outdated as it relates to illustration?
I'm choosing them, as I assume they will help with the overall storyline. Would you agree?

I haven't been to my local library for quite some time. never thought they would carry comics, graphic novels etc.
Thanks for the info. I will try.

Hey Frank, how are you getting on since you joined this group, update us on your reading. What's been good, bad etc.

Frank | 170 comments Hello:

Lately I have been mostly commenting in the other discussion, what have you added to your collection lately.
But in any event, I have reviewed basically everything i have read to date.
Liked Locke and Key Vol. 1&2, hoping another deluxe edition will be released continuing the story.
Five Ghosts Vol. 1, was good, I will continue with that story.
I enjoyed parts of Low Vol.1, waiting for a HC to continue that one.
Fables, this was recommended to me at a comic store. I have read half of Vol.1 to date, but have been busy, will finish it up in a few days. I see that this is a long series, that runs over many HC volumes.
I enjoyed Thanos Rising, gives a good background on the character.
Reading Avengers vs. Thanos, that was a quite long series of strung together books from the early sixties to the mid seventies. This volume gave me a lengthly backstory on Thanos over the years and was a good preface to get into the rest of the cosmic books I have put together.
I finished a slim HC Of Captain America, which I believe is the first five issues in the Brubaker omnibus Vol. 1. Which I now have all five.
I have picked up quite a bit of books, waiting on one more delivery from IST on Thursday, and will probably take a pic for everyone. I hope someday to have collection pics that I see on the group site.
For now I keep buying (too much),reading and, learning from all of you and on-line about different story arcs, events, characters, etc.

Thanks.

Sage (thaczero) | 96 comments Sounds a lot like what I went through a few years!! So many good titles that have hit the shelves since I last picked up books (I had about a 10 year void in comic collections)... Especially with the new Deluxe / Omnibus format, no more bagging and boarding!

Fables is a fun read but the last deluxe edition is really weird... it doesn't flow from the previous ones because they incorporate a side story from a character that has few reference points. I do still enjoy the series though.

How would you say Five Ghosts compares to Locke and Key? I really liked Locke and Key but don't know much about Five Ghosts.

message 17: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share Nice Frank. What about the infinity gauntlet omnibus?

message 18: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments @Sage, Five Ghosts was ok, it was a bit like horror version of Indiana Jones, still I will read further.
Locke and Key was excellent, very dark and eerie.

@Alistair, Have the Infinity Gauntlet, I have to put together a reading order that will include the Annihilation omni's , as well as the War of Kings, Realm of Kings and GOTG books, before I embark on that read.

The cosmic read you are setting up should be pretty epic. :)

I see you are checking out LOW. The art is a bit busy and a bit disjointed at time, but definitely adds to the atmosphere of the story. It's different.

Did you check out Fear Agent?

message 20: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share @frank Yeah that sounds awesome Frank, make sure you include the fantastic four run by Hickman in your read. It's one of my favourite omnibuses of all time. It's very cosmic :)

@sage & Frank make sure you check the famous Daredevil run by bendis and Brubaker. If I could only recommend one Marvel run it would be that. Incredible.

I myself only started reading comics about ten years ago and I'm still catching up, just to give you a scale of what's ahead of you :D

I haven't even read the Sandman omnibuses yet. They say it's one of the best comic runs ever. I'm saving the best till last.

message 21: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments @Relstuart, I hope I will have everything lined up before I set off on my cosmic read.
Yes the art work at times was a bit much on Low, I did enjoy the story, and would like to see where it goes.
I purchased Vol. 1 of Fear Agent HC from IST, waiting for quite a while for delivery. IST has been a bit slow on this order.
@Alistair, I have both Volumes of Hickman's Fantastic Four, I assume they can be read as a stand alone?
Thanks, ten years and still catching up, shish!! Well at least I have this group, helping out. Thing is I also read a good deal of fantasy and sci-fi as well. Trying to fit it all in.
I have seen quite a few different Sandman editions. There are the two omnibus' and I thought I saw a slipcased edition as well. Are the two omnibus' complete?

message 22: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share Yes I read them as standalone, but you will need some cosmic background so read them last to appreciate them fully.

Yes the two sandman omnibuses are the complete series. There are also other spin offs such as Lucifer.

Frank | 170 comments Thanks, more to put on the list, spend, spend ouch!!!!

Sandman is pretty stand alone. Probably the easiest/cheapest way of acquiring the story is the two omnibus volumes. There are also 5 Absolute editions and a related one, Death. I have the first four which captures the main story.

I read quotes from the series years before I ever read the books. And the quotes are fantastic. Two examples:

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.” ― Neil Gaiman

“I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing.” ― Neil Gaiman

But... while I LOVE some of the quotes the story was not what I expected. It's not really a super-hero story. It's... not like anything else I've read. I like it, but with some reservations about some of the philosophical implications it contains. It's also very violent in places. Stuff that can make you wince a bit. Since you like fantasy Frank I think this might be something you find interesting.

OT, I highly recommend The Black Prism by Brent Weeks for your next fantasy read. =)

message 25: by Sage (new)

Sage (thaczero) | 96 comments Yeah, Sandman is a must. I'm not sure if it's the 'best series ever'.. I remember absolutely loving it when I read it back in 1995 though. Definitely top 5 material and should be part of anyone's 'classics homework'. There have been so many amazing series released since then I wonder if it holds up.

I have the Bendis DD run queued up. Have volume 2 of the Omni and 1-3 (including Smith's) of the OHCs... gotta find #4 and then Brubaker's stuff. So tough and I keep hoping for a re-print now that the show has been out for a bit.

Still working through Uncanny X-Force which I absolutely love.

They are awesome quotes. I read issue one and i found it really interesting. I'm looking forward to it.

message 27: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments @Relstuart, great quotes, plan on picking up the Omni's in the near future. I have read some of Gaiman's books and enjoyed them.
I have already read Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy, and have the first three books of the Lightbringer series. With many series, I like to wait until they are almost done or done before reading. I have too many that are still being written that I am already involved in. I think he has one more book set for next year, so a winter read is planned.

@ Alistair and Sage, I looked at the Bendis and Brubaker Daredevil Omni's, expensive, wow. Put them on the list see if I can eventually pick them up.

any luck with DD?

While I usually just try to stick to hardcovers, if I didn't have the Bendis and Brubaker runs it would be worth it to buy the complete collection TPBs just to be able to experience the story. Sounds like you have the Bendis part of the run figured out.

message 30: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share The run after that (not straight after) is Mark Waid. It's completely different and more colourful, but i really enjoyed what i've read so far.

message 31: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
I'm actually gathering the Diggle/Shadowland DD event between Brubaker and Waid for a custom bound omnibus so I'll have an unbroken run from Bendis to Waid. After the Diggle DD issues, DD takes a break and the Black Panther becomes the focus of the book that used to star Murdock. I don't think that really counts for following DD but I may check out that run at some point.
