How do you define science fiction?

The question pestered me as I pondered the release, promotion, and marketing of my novel. The simple answer, my novel is science fiction. But it occurred to me, my simple definition may not encompass the genre’s diverse and specialized niches in today’s marketplace.

In my personal opinion what are the aspects of Science Fiction, is in three parts.

"What If" (Typically how technology impacts the social environment).

"Usually In the future" (not a requirement).

"Solving a Social or Society Problem" (usually a team effort with one person as the leader).

Unlike Fantasy that usually is in the past with a hero on a personal quest.
