Raythe Reign My name is Catherine Tetzlaff aka Raythe Reign aka X. Aratare. I am the author and owner of Raythe Reign Publishing, a serial m/m website and publisher. You can find me at raythereign.com.

I was alerted to one of my readers that Lynn Hagen in "Saving Sean (Christian's Coven 11)" has plagiarized large portions of my serial novel Sanctuary.

Chapter 26 and 27 of Sanctuary were published on September 17, 2013 and October 17, 2013 two years before Saving Sean was published. Here is the link to the serial site where this was published: http://raythereign.com/index.php/stor...

You cannot see the exact chapters because they are behind a paywall, but the quoted portions below make it very evident that Ms. Hagen copy-pasted.

Essentially, Ms. Hagen took my bath scene in my vampire novel Sanctuary and put it with some small additions in her story.

Please compare this small comparison sampling between the two works:

CHAPTER 26 OF SANCTUARY:

Alex’s gaze was fixed on Demetrius as the Master Vampire’s fingers undid each of the button and inch by tantalizing inch of Demetrius creamy skin was revealed, but he shook himself and answered, “I’m sure that you were beside yourself with worry. I hope that you did not say anything that you regret or that hurt her too badly. I have a mind of my own. I could have said no, but I didn’t.”

CHAPTER 8 OF CHRISTIAN'S COVEN

When the vampire returned, Sean's gaze was fixed on Isla's fingers as they undid each of the buttons of his shirt and inch by tantalizing inch of Isla's creamy skin was revealed.

CHAPTER 26 OF SANCTUARY:

Demetrius was now toeing off his shoes and socks. He let the shirt slid off his shoulders and flutter to the ground. He wore only his pants now. Alex loved how they hugged Demetrius’ slender, but powerful hips. His chest ached with the singular beauty that was the Master Vampire.

CHAPTER 8 OF CHRISTIAN'S COVEN

Isla stepped back and toed off his shoes and removed his socks. He let his shirt slide off of his shoulders, and it fluttered to the floor. He wore only pants now. Sean loved how they hugged Isla's slender, but powerful hips. Sean's chest ached with the singular beauty that was Isla.

***

CHAPTER 26 OF SANCTUARY

“What do you want to happen in this bath, my Alexander?” Demetrius asked, his voice low and smoky.

Alex never been one to mince words. He was nervous and he knew he was going to stutter a little as he said this, but he was going to say it anyways, “I want us to have sex. To make love. I really want you inside me, Demetrius. I don’t want to wait.”

CHAPTER 26 OF SANCTUARY:

Demetrius once again disappeared into the darkness of the bedroom. When he returned though he was no longer wearing his pants. He was nude. The only thing in his hands was the decanter of crimson blood. The red against the pale milkiness of his skin was mesmerizing.

With his eyes were burning indigo, Demetrius said, “Undress, Alexander. I am going to take you in the bath.

CHAPTER 8 OF CHRISTIAN'S COVEN

Isla stepped from the bathroom. When he returned, he was no longer wearing his pants. He was nude. The flicker of the light against his pale milkiness of his skin was mesmerizing. He set the candle on the counter. With his eyes full of emotion, Isla said, "Undress Sean. I am going to take you in the bath."

***

CHAPTER 27 OF SANCTUARY:

Alex’s sweet, surprised expression at his appearance, nude, in the doorway made Demetrius smile. He hid his smile though behind the lip of the decanter.

CHAPTER 8 OF CHRISTIAN'S COVEN:

Sean's sweet, surprised expression at Isla's appearance, nude, in the doorway made him smile. He his his smile, though, as he turned away.

CHAPTER 27 OF SANCTUARY

“You aren’t just going to stand there, are you?” Alex asked. There were high spots color on his cheeks. The steam from the hot water made his skin glow. “Because I think I feel a little too weak to take off my own clothes. I might need some help. And not even you can help me from all the way over there.”

CHAPTER 8 OF CHRISTIAN'S COVEN:

"You aren't just going to stand there, are you?" Sean asked. There were high spots of color on his cheeks. The steam from the hot water made his face glow.

***

CHAPTER 27 OF SANCTUARY:

He sauntered over to the young man. He took his time so that Alex could watch the beautiful play of muscle beneath velvet skin. Alex’s eyes darted all over his body. It was as if he didn’t know where to look, or more like, he wanted to see everything at once.

CHAPTER 27 OF SANCTUARY

For his part, Demetrius feasted his eyes on Alex’s face the most though he admired the young man’s muscular limbs, broad shoulders and compact waist. But the truth was that he loved watching the young man’s emotions play across his features. The eyes truly were windows into the soul and Alex’s were as clear as a cloudless blue sky. Demetrius remembered sunlight when he looked at Alex. Sunlight and life and all the good things that he had forgotten for so long.

For his part, Isla feasted his eyes on Sean as he admired the young man's slender limbs, soft shoulders and compact waist. But the truth was that he loved watching the young man's emotions play across his features. The eyes were truly windows into the soul, and Sean's were as clear as a cloudless sky.

CHAPTER 26 OF SANCTUARY:

“Fuck,” the young man breathed.

“Not yet, but soon.” Demetrius rubbed his cheek along the side of Alex’s cock, relishing the blood warmth of the young man’s organ against his own cool flesh. “I know that I am not your first, my Alexander. And, clearly, you are not mine.”

"Fuck," Sean breathed.

"Not yet, but soon." Isla rubbed his cheek along the side of Sean's cock, relishing the man's organ against his own cook flesh.

I could provide much, much, much more, but this is ample evidence for any reasonable person to conclude that Ms. Hagen plagiarized my work. What should we do about this? I've contacted her publisher and they say they are going to take down the works.

But that's NOT ENOUGH.

As readers and authors, we have to stop this in the m/m community. It's hard enough to get legitimacy without someone like Ms. Hagen copy-pasting and selling plagiarized work. We have to make it so painful for the Ms. Hagen's of the world that they DON'T DO THIS.

If you've read any of Ms. Hagen's work and thought it sounded suspiciously similar to another author's ... you're probably right. Please alert the authors, alert your friends. Don't let her get away with this.

I've gotten the book down, but Lynn and Siren made MONEY on this and both of them are sitting there like: we took the book down, isn't that enough? Uhm NO. You stole from me and the readers you ripped off.

Siren has told me that because of their "contract" with Ms. Hagan she's responsible for all infringement/copyright damages. Yet Siren made money off of me and I have nothing to do with that contract. They can pay me and go enforce their contract with her, but that's nothing to do with me.

We can't let authors OR PUBLISHERS get away with this stuff.

Karla This is awful Raythe i want people in my newsfedd to read this post sothey can be aware of this issue. I'm a member of your site & fully support your amazing talented stories & I have no respect or tolerance for authors that plagarize other authors works is disgusting & wrong! I will not buy any books from Siren publishing ever again ( I might've bought 3 or 4 in the past but no more) because I agree with you that they should not just shrug this author's & their company's actions like " oh well nothing else we can do" mentality & I fully believe they should pay any loyalties made out of her plagarized books to you. I will continue to support your amazing works & continue my membership for life since obviously you are one of my favorite authors! :)

OMG how incredibly sweet, thank you!

I keep hoping that Siren will do the right thing. Like I said to them: Siren has no protection from my claim because of a contract Siren have with a party that has nothing to do with me, i.e, Ms. Hagen. While Siren may be able to recover what it must pay out on this claim of copyright infringement from her that is irrelevant in terms of their duties to me. I have a valid and very real claim for copyright infringement against Siren.

They actually in their about us on their website BRAG about how much money their authors make ... yeah and how they spent $200k in marketing money. My question to them is: where did that money come from? Part of it is from a plagiarist.

Emerald Henderson This is plagiarized content. This author is cheating everyone out of their money, by stealing from Sanctuary. Let me know if you need any readers to testify that this is your work, Raythe. I'm Methuselah1, and though I don't yet have the cash to renew my membership, Sanctuary, Dark Earth, The Fell, The Abyss, The Pact, and all of their connected tales are my favorite stories on your website. You and Alex Woolfson of Yaoi 911 are my favorite M/M writers of all time! Please, if there is anything I can do to help, just shoot me an email or a Facebook message!

I totally appreciate this! Honestly, its been really nightmarish even though things have worked so far. But this latest thing is just ridiculous.

No one is debating whether it was plagiarized or not (thank goodness, I mean you'd have to be BLIND to do that), but now they're all looking down at their feet and scuffing their shoes like: you REALLY want the money we stole from you?

Uhm, yes. Now please.

Siren's position is: oh, but she TOLD US it was original work! So even though we now KNOW it wasn't and have made lots of money off of it, well ... WE DON'T HAVE TO GIVE IT BACK! B/c she said, you know, that it was really, really hers.

HEAD DESK.

I guess that explains how Siren can afford this:

"We brand our company and our imprints through many advertising venues, all of which are solely at our cost. We spent over $200K annually marketing our company brand."

I wish Raythe Reign had $200k to spend in marketing annually! My God, what I could do with $200k in marketing ...

Oh, thank you! I appreciate every reader, you cannot even know.

She told me that this was the only time she had ever plagiarized, but I don't know whether that's true or not. I was going to give her a forum on my blog to assure people that it was really a one-time thing, but until I get this nonsense sorted out about the money? I'm not doing that. I mean why would I want to introduce yet more readers to someone who might be plagiarizing other hard working writers? And I definitely won't be supporting Siren with my reading dollars like EVER.

Siren is just a greedy no morals publishing company that sickens me to the core with their feeble & ridiculos excuses to do what's right & I really hope that their advertisers realize how low standing this company is & they think better next time they want to support & invest in such company. Makes me wonder how many plagarists they have under contract & just don't care! Uggh!! They should pay you for the books sold with your work on top of the copyright infringment claim!! If you had $200k in marketing you would take over the world hehe!! You're stories are always amazing & your works sell themselves without much gimmicks hah!! Of course then you can have Mathia just do tons more yummy artwork for your stories hehe :)

Casandra, aka. Erinys, here.

Just saying, Raythe *could* take over the world with 200K annually in marketing. That was actually my first thought when Raythe mentioned what she could do with that kind of money.

(In all honesty, my second thought in my discordant mind was where someone else had taken over the world and established a 'happy, fun dictatorship'... I've read too much of TVtropes.com... In the image, everyone was wearing creepy smiley face masks... Right... Um. *coughs uncomfortably*)

My third thought was one of Mathia's and Raythe's covers plastered all over Times Square... Actually, the image my depraved mind used was one of the covers for The Merman... the first one, Transformation.

But, I digress...

This plagiarism really is outrageous. It’s an insult and injury, to Raythe, primarily, but to all of us, her readers, as well. This would be a much more bitter pill to swallow if I wasn't so jaded... but nonetheless there's this quiet sanctity in my moments with Raythe's stories. This feels like a violation of those moments. I have a ten-dollar a month membership to Raythe Reign Publishing even though we can't even pay the bills, and it's like this rape of ideas is saying 'Fuck that, who the fuck cares what kind of care you put into Raythe, in the hours spent reviewing, or she in her many days spent writing? What the fuck does her dedication to her writing and her readers matter?'

That this was another reader makes is a betrayal, plain and simple. I hate traitors.

I don't know if people remember the incident with Siren signing Christine Phoenix whom plagiarized J.L. Langley's book -->https://vacuousminx.wordpress.com/201...

They just don't care. Marketing only does so much when a stigma like plagiarism gets attached to their name.

Siren literally says and I quote:

Hello Catherine,

All manuscripts accepted for publication are warranted by the author to be original works. Once the publisher received your claim, the title was removed from all sales outlets.

Authors own sole copyrights to their works. The publishing contract further warrants that the author is solely responsible for all copyright claims and infringements against their works.

We have discussed the issue with Ms. Hagen. She indicated she will handle this matter directly.

They literally thing (wrongly) that a contract they have with someone that's NOT ME makes the immune from prosecution. But it doesn't. What it does is that AFTER they pay me they can go after Ms. Hagen.

I was a lawyer in my former life. I find it ludicrous and I'm not backing down.

As to Ms. Hagen handling it. Haven't heard from her yet. She knows she has to repay me for her part of the royalties but Siren has to pay me for theirs.

More than that. She stole from you. If she had only used your writing to sell hers, she might have publically stated you as her role model, an author whose awesomeness she strives to emulate. But that's not what she did. She raped your ideas, she stole what is yours, what you put your heart and soul into, she mocked the dedication and care to detail that you and your readers nurture in every word exchanged, in chapter and review. She insulted the very relationship you have with those that read your stories.

Fadia Pierre Raythe, thank u for exposing Siren for what they really are. Hagen is guilty, the machine behind them is worst. we really should boycott and blacklist Siren.

message 23: by Audi (new) - rated it 1 star

Audi I will absolutely never buy anything from Siren publishing or Lynn Hagen and will let everyone know the same through social media. If Siren makes this right, maybe I'll sing a different tune, but the author needs to be blacklisted and find a new career path. There is NO justification for doing this.

Absynthe My rule of thumb is: Don't buy anything published by Siren. It's crap. The authors they publish are awful. Expect mediocrity and even then you'll be disappointed.

Lynn Hagen has been plagiarizing herself for a long time. All her books are so similar in plot and character that she might as well be copy/pasting. So her plagiarizing someone else is unsurprising. She's probably desperate for new ideas, none of which she can come up with herself.

Not only do I think Lynn Hagen needs to pay for any plagiarization, but I think Siren needs to go out of business. They should stop publishing crap, embarrassing the genre and killing trees with their paperbacks.

I feel sorry for all those people who purchased her works and won't be able to get a refund ><

I want to boycott her works...but I haven't read any of them anyway. Although, note to self: avoid Siren Publishings!

Blaine ToraTsume I wasn't even aware this had happened and was looking to read this book. After reading this, I am so disappointed in Lynn Hagen. She was one of the authors who started me writing MM romances myself. I will now never read another one of her books. I will also be looking into the original story that she plagiarized from. Thank you so much for not letting this go. When we let plagiarism go unpunished, we are in essence validating it.

message 29: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I'm upset about what Lynn Hagen did. I really liked her books. But it is not right to steal someone else's hard work. I agree that just taking it down does not make up for what she did. She should also hand over the money that she earned from the book. Siren should also hand over the money they made off the book as well. But not only that, she should publically apologise not only to you, but to all readers whether they read the book before they realized it was copied or not. Then maybe she can rewrite the book over completely and before she publishes it have you look over it to make sure nothing was copied and then share the profits of the newly written book with you to recognize that you looked over and proofread her work, and gives you the credit due. Though it will never change what she did, if she shows that she is truly sorry for what she did, she should still be given a second chance. It doesn't mean that what she did will be forgotten or go away. But hopefully she will learn from this experience. I really wish that she will. Her books were really good. HOWEVER, until she can prove that she learned her lesson, I will not be buying ANY more books from her at all. Which is sad because I haven't finished Brac Village, but I DO NOT and WILL NOT support a thief.

I had noticed that her website hadn't been updated for some time, so I finally did a little google search to try to find out why. I was shocked to find that this was the reason. Although I'm not familiar with your work, I respect the time an effort I'm sure you put into it. I sincerely hope that you recoup all monies that are owed to you. I will no longer be purchasing anymore books by Lynn Hagen or Siren Publishing!

message 33: by Sally (new)

Sally With all due respect I don't understand how a publisher would be able to work out if a book has been plagerised other than reading every one. I would say that the person you should be going after is the author herself as if you hit the publisher then the author doesn't suffer financially.

Surely when a publisher is given a book they assume that it is the authors own work and until shown otherwise would have no reason not to think so.

I hope that they will stop selling her books and I will get rid of the ones I have.

I know this will not be a view that will be widely held but I wanted to express it anyway

message 34: by Remus (new)

Remus Grrrl I am not saying plagiarism is good, or isn't a bad thing to do, however, some of these passages I have read in other books. They are pretty generic. Has anyone thought that she read the book years before she wrote hers and because she liked it, the words were stuck in her head and she used them. Not intending to plagiarise, but unknowingly?? I don't know if this is true or not, but I find it interesting how everyone is quick to jump on the bandwagon of blacklisting a prolific author because of one mistake. ONE. Since when did we become a society that doesn't give second chances. If she did knowingly plagiarise, then that is wrong, but sometimes people make a mistake, it happens. It is not like these passages are stealing your story, they are generic sex scene descriptions. I would be more worried if someone stole your characters or what not. Generic scenes........bah.
