Emerson made a movement of her head that could have either been a nod or shake, or both. "Yes, well... It depends," she said, speaking slowly. "On our abilities and power level. Sometimes, it depletes the giver's strength and life, others..." She paused, sort of falling asleep while she talked. "Others can't at all, and still more can just give health to whomever they wish." Her bloodied hand took Bones', then, and tucked it next to her face. "I'm so sorry," she whispered.

Copper mewed in protest but stood up anyway. She sniffed the air a few times before running off into the forest.
Bones watched her go for a moment before running back upstairs and kicking his shoes off. He crawled onto the bed and laid next to Emerson, taking her hand in his.
Emerson moved as close to Bones as she could, her breathing ragged again. A moment later she said through her teeth, "The tonic I took is not working." She bit down on the inside of her cheek and curled her body again in pain. "It hurts really bad, Crispin," she told him, the hand not held finding it's way back to the frost over her chest to ice it back over again, as she could feel it crumbling away.

A sobbing cry fell from Emerson's lips as she felt a weird pulling from her to Bones. "Don't do that," she begged, although she could feel the pain lessening. She realized what was doing and cried again. "Please don't do that." She clutched his hand tighter, her eyes shut tightly with the apples of her cheeks contorted to make up for the ache.

Emerson wanted to protest, but she was too half-asleep and honestly grateful to do so. Her face and body relaxed a little after another moment from the release, and it was evident that she had finally fell asleep. She did not wake at the sound of the front door crashing open, along with a hissing followed by, "Stupid cat," and then a hole lot of cursing at what was probably the sight of all the blood. "Emerson?" called the same voice warily. "Bones?"

Malachi bared his teeth at Bones in defense. "I have no idea what you're talking about." His eyes looked over Bones, though, and realized that the blood couldn't have come from him. He only half-answered Bones' obvious demand with, "Heal what?"

A string of curses came from Malachi as he took in Emerson's curled position on the rumpled bed, her half-nakedness, and the glimpse of scrapes along her shoulder and neck. Malachi pushed Bones' grip off of him and stepped forward, reaching over to roll Emerson onto her back -to which she made no protest other than a pathetic groan.
He cursed again peered at the ice, gel and ripped flesh beneath the first two before speaking back to Bones. "We did not do this, you idiot. And I cannot do much." He swallowed and continued: "If I do not... I know someone who can." He didn't explain further before returning his attention back Emerson's limp body. "If she wasn't poisoned, I would be able to fix her just fine. Probably." He reached out and splayed his long fingers over her chest before setting his palm down over the ice, which crackled under the weight. Emerson shook her head once in her half-sleep, and Malachi asked Bones, "Why the hell did you let her fall asleep?"

"And what makes you think it was a demon? Did you even see her attacker?" Malachi gave Bones a calculating look, almost as if he were trying to decide if Bones would have done it to get to the rebels. "Besides, it could have easily been a demon hired by the legion..." He trailed off, leaning over Emerson again. "I cannot call this angel; we have to take her to him." He knew Bones wouldn't like that, but otherwise she would die. "He lives in a cabin in the woods a couple towns over." Malachi sighed, moving to slide Emerson to the edge of the bed so the angel could pick her up.

A grunt came from Malachi as he picked himself off of the floor. "Because he's a recluse, obviously. There's no way to contact him other than going to him directly. Unless contacts you personally." The angel didn't complain about Bones' out-lash, but also didn't confirm to Bones what he thought of him. He left the room, knowing the demon would follow to walk downstairs and open the front door for him.

Copper came dashing out of the house and stood to attention near Bones's side.
"It's... There was this old playground from about fifty years ago that he built the cabin on." It was... really weird. "Can you receive telepathic communication? I can just... give you the place from my head?" Malachi had telepathy himself, and it was a bit weak, but he was willing to spend his little power for the couple (well, obviously mostly Emerson).

Malachi swore under his breath, putting his hand on Bones' shoulder and concentrating on where the old he-angel lived, which wasn't too hard as it was difficult to forget. There was a weird dizzying feeling in his body, but when he opened his eyes they stood in front of a big cabin that had smoke billowing up from a chimney. "We're here," he said, his voice rough. He let go of Bones and stalked to the front entrance, not hesitating to rap his knuckles on the the door.

A few moments later Copper came running up behind Bones again standing next to him, waiting for a command or something to do.
"Don't bother me, I'm dead!" shouted an old-sounding voice from inside the cabin. Malachi groaned and just opened the door, not willing to waste time on politeness.
"We need your help," spoke the dark-haired angel, stepping aside so the salt-and-pepper, ghost-eyed elder could view Emerson and Bones.
"Ooh, a she-angel. What'd you do to her?" demanded the old guy -seemingly to Bones- as he turned and gestured for them to follow him into what looked like a kitchen. He pointed to the scratched-up wooden table for her to be laid on, yanking a table running off of it so her blood wouldn't stain the cloth.

"Well, I don't know what's wrong with her, so why don't you take a step back and calm your demonic fury." The old man glared back to Bones, a challenge in his eyes before he took in Emerson's makeshift healing... whatever she had done. "Well, this stopped the blood for now, but it didn't do otherwise. She basically disabled herself from healing, but without this she would have died before this closed." He peered closer, peeling off the sheet of ice and setting it on an empty space on the table. "Shit," he hissed after looking closer. He pointed to Malachi without looking back. "You need to leave. Both of you need to leave if you have any sort of dark power leaking from you." Malachi paused before just leaving the room, not making a protest.

Bones sighed softly and turned to look at Malachi, "So if you didn't do this then who would uh?" he asked and looked the angel over. "I know it wasn't the legion because they wouldn't have bothered with a demon, they would have sent one of their own" he said and pursued his lips for a moment. "She remembered them saying Change of Plans, and we only had plans with you. One of you mates change the plan or something" he asked.
"If they did, it was out of spite or just rebelling from the- well, rebels." Malachi leaned lazily against a wall, his previous panic for helping them seemingly gone. "Unless it was just a ruse to get you and Emerson out of the way, or turned against us." He really wanted to know why they had to leave, especially with the dark energy thing. Whatever had happened to her must have been extremely sensitive to be pliable to his fallen abilities. "You didn't even see him?"

Malachi looked Bones over before giving an almost twitch-like shrug. "Neither of you probably know, but for some reason we don't know, female angels are kind of... just dying off. Offspring are over ninety percent more likely to be male than female. She's nearly the only one we know of for hundreds of miles." He narrowed his eyes just slightly. "We need the legion to not have her. And we also know she won't join without you." Both of them knew he had given a trickily evasive answer to the question, but it was at least partially honest.

Malachi seemed to mull this over in his head. "I'm not in a state of charge to be giving you that promise, but it's not that big of a deal. Trust me, whoever it is already has a bounty on his head -meaning we want whoever did this dead- so I don't see why you can't be the one to take care of it." He glanced at the door again when they could hear the old angel shouting.
"Shut up, kid, you don't need to throw a fit!" Followed by Emerson yelling for Bones.

Emerson had obviously freaked out when she awoke to find a stranger leaning over her, and now just clutched her hand over her upper chest, leaning into Bones while she gathered in the surroundings. "Well, she's not going to die," the old angel muttered. "But see this?" He reached over and peeled Emerson's hand away to reveal a strange black webbing over the now-scarred wounds. "This is Hileif. It's a demon-based poison that allows your kind and other darknesses to enter angel bodies." He gave a pointed look to Bones. "That's why you had to leave; she was too sensitive that even without your will, you could have.. broken her."
Emerson looked up at the man, her brows furrowed. "Who are you?" she asked quietly, after peering down at the webbing.
The guy gave a shrug. "You cannot pronounce my name. Just call me Rowan. Anyway, that will probably never go away, so you'll need something to help protect you. I'll be back."
He turned, then, and left the room to find whatever it was, and Emerson looked back up at Bones, her fingers brushing his face.

Emerson slowly shook her head, upset for not being able to do so. "I barely remember anything," she whispered. "I remember the demon telling me something, and then you looked... really angry, and then you taking the pain... and falling asleep. Sorry." She leaned her head up to kiss Bones again before leaning her head against his shoulder, still feeling weak. She let him hold her, though, his arms wrapped around her knees pulled to her chest, the same way she had sat in the basement only a few hours before. "I love you too." Later, she would ask him to give her an account of what had happened, but she knew she would barely listen if he told her now.
A second later 'Rowan' and Malachi reappeared, an amulet dangling from Rowan's fist. "This is the best I have," he said, almost in an apology. "You just have to be careful around demons now, okay?" He confirmed before holding out the amulet to take.

"It makes it harder for her to be controlled by darkness, unless it's her own." Malachi began cleaning various items he had pulled for her off of the table. "The poison... makes it feasible for a demon or even fallen angel to enter her soul, basically. The amulet protects her from lesser forces, but wouldn't do much against a demon with greater power. You don't have to worry about hurting her yourself; you have to work at it, it's not an accidental thing." He wiped down the table a bit from a little of her blood before looking up at the couple. "In simpler words, what with and how she was poisoned turns her into as weak as... How you would basically view a human, to an older demon. Make sense?"

Although Emerson momentarily snuggled into the bed, she slid to sit up, taking in the room. "Let me help clean up while you tell me what happened," she said, making to slide off the bed. She also need a shower... And a shirt. She could sleep later.

"I'm afraid if I fall asleep, I'll sleep for days and miss the raid." Emerson eyed Bones carefully as she scooped up the sheets to wash. Luckily, they hadn't been stained beyond repair. A few plants would fix it. "Do you still want to go to that?" she asked, her arms tangled up in the fabric.

"Okay," Emerson said, still not sure about it. She set the sheets down and wrapped her arms around him. "I love you." She swallowed before continuing, "About one more thing, though... Do you think the rebels or legion have some ulterior motive to wanting us with them? With the female angel thing and all?" That had really weirded her out, to say the least.

Emerson nodded, rubbing her hands up and down his sides gently before pulling away to dig through her bag. They'd been there... four days? And she hadn't unpacked yet. Heh. She grabbed another one of her long-sleeved shirts and other clean items before slipping into the bathroom to take a shower.

Copper seemingly nodded slightly before bounding upstairs and running into the bedroom and then the bathroom. She plopped down next to the bathroom and stood guard just as she was asked.
Bones left the house and went to the store, moving through the aisles as fast as he could while he looked for what he needed.
Emerson took a warm shower, although she made it quick because she still wasn't feeling one hundred percent. After she got out she dried off with the remaining towel that they had, remembering that Bones had used one to hold her wound earlier. She sighed and decided to go into town with him the next day to get the rest of their shopping done. She pulled on the shirt she had grabbed and climbed over Coppe laying in the doorway of the bathroom, patting the Mngwa before walking downstairs to start a load of laundry with the sheets, grateful she had bought detergent the last time at the store. Finally, she went back upstairs and laid down on the stripped bed, Copper jumping up and laying down next to her with a purr.

Emerson had heard Bones come back in, but was half-asleep so she didn't call to him. She had a bare pillow tucked under one cheek, and a drowsy laugh came from her when Copper protectively placed a gigantic paw on the other side of her face. She listened to the purring but waited to sleep until Bones came back up.

When Bones was done with his shower he walked out of the bathroom in just his shorts, didn't bother with putting on a shirt. He walked over to the bed and quietly shooed Copper before crawling into the bed.
Copper meowed as she stood up but just moved to the foot of the bed rather then getting off completely.
Emerson relaxed finally when Bones climbed in next to her, and she snuggled in close to him. "Thank you for doing all of that," she whispered, holding her hand on his arm tightly. The exact day she had said she'd wanted thing to go back to normal, they'd turned out even worse.
