Ed Morawski | 54 comments Has anyone here dared to take the plunge into the 'dark web' or 'deep web'? The sites Google and other search engines don't index...

I've been researching how to access the underbelly through TOR. Just wondered if anyone had any advice.

Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) Well... why would you want to? I mean, that's where all the child porn sites are, so I'm a tad worried about you...

Ed Morawski | 54 comments Oh there's a lot more there I hear: Silk Road wannabes, drugs, weapons, hitmen, uncharted territories, undocumented science, fringe science - It's research for a book, of course. I've been cruising the forums and boards for a while trying to learn the lingo and find my way around. Found a whole lot of creepy stories for starters.

And I'm looking for those lost plans to a time travel machine.

Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) Ah, okay, so the usual creepinees any author would do. Just making sure.

Well, other than avoid like the plague, don't ever say who you really are or your real location. Exchange nothing with anyone. Look, but don't touch. Or... avoid like the plague.

Riley Amos Westbrook (sonshinegreene) | 124 comments If you need to ask how to access the deep web, you probably shouldn't access the deep web. That being said, as Lily said, stay anonomys.

The first rule of Dark Web is you do not access Dark Web...do I need to tell you the second rule?

What kind of research are you doing, Ed?

I've consorted with pathologists so I could assist with a forensic autopsy, learned how to pick locks, and spent enough time with Black Hat hackers to write about the practice without fearing I'll be called on my writing.

Unless you're writing a manual, you don't actually need to delve too deep to write about it convincingly.

Ed Morawski | 54 comments The dark web exists under our noses. It's a series of web sites that either Google chooses not to index, doesn't care to index, or whose owners don't want it to index.

I've already learned there are quasi- government and corporate sites that resist search engine indexing for various reasons.

Just the fact Google ignores certain aspects of the internet makes me want to find out more. It's estimated there is actually more information and more sites in the dark web than the normal internet.

There's a story there for sure...

Renee E | 335 comments Dammit, Ed. Now you've got my mind twitching.

Maybe a good idea to do it from someone else's computer? ;)

Ed Morawski | 54 comments The nice thing is that to access the dark web you need TOR (The Onion Router) - the nice thing about TOR is that it's designed to be totally anonymous.

One cannot be traced using TOR.
