Listing books/editions by certain author

How does goodreads "choose" the edition of a book, when it lists the books of a certain author? Does it choose the edition of the book that has been rated the most?

The reason I am asking is that it bugs me that when you add a cover to a book (that has no cover) it doesn't show when you are browsing the books by certain author. Instead the list shows for ex. an edition without a cover that is an audio cassette. I think a lot of people end up rating the audio casette, even though they read the book. I mean it's quite difficult to get hold of an audio cassette edition that was released 20 years ago, and people are rating those editions.

It would be nice if goodreads prefered to list and show the edition that has the cover picture in it, so that people would recognise and know how it looks like. Now they don't even see the cover, if they don't go to the books own page and change edition.

This is a problem especialy in the smaller language groups (not english..where you usually have several editions with book cover pictures in the database, unlike smaller languages). Goodreads lists books with no covers, even if a cover has been added. People have just startted to rate the book that has been added (latest?) and shows first on the list even if it would be an audio cassette or large text edition they probably didn't read.

The default edition, which will come up in searches by title and show on the author profile, is not the one most rated, but the one most shelved.

Concerns about that are outside the realm of what librarians have any control over.
