You post reminded me of something I'd read, took me a while to figure out what it was but the short story My Wife Reincarnated as a Solitaire by Kij Johnson is pretty similar to what you are looking for. It's up on her site and included in her anthology At the Mouth of the River of Bees: Stories.

Reading Level: I think adult but maybe NA / YA.
Story: It’s narrated by the husband who is thrifty and pompous. The wife and local priest (?) hatch a plot to convince the husband that she has been turned into a bird due to a magical illness. With great misgiving, the husband decides to divorce his bird-wife because it’s not decent to be married to a fowl.
Genre: Fantasy
Format: Paper. It was included in a short story collection.
Misc: The whole thing was quite short but sharp, understated and witty in the extreme! I thought Kelly Link was the author but I haven’t been able to find it in any of her works. Does this story sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance for any help!! =)
