April smiled softly, finding it sweet that he put so much weight into such a small gift… at least it was a small gift to her. Just a pair of discarded clothes, that she certainly couldn't put any other use into. "There's no need to blame yourself." She said softly, knowing the accident had been the fault of her own clumsiness, but it touched her that he would do that. "I'll probably see you again at the studio. Again, thank you, for your kindness." She said seriously, watching as he opened the door and slipped out. It was strange, meeting new people, and not entirely a bad experience, actually, it was a rather nice one. And now she had to suffer alone, until her sister returned, swooning and happy. And she would be happy for her, and pretend that nothing was wrong, as she always did. And tomorrow… tomorrow she would try to go back to the studio, try to explain to the director what had happened.
Maria tucked her face against his collar bone, smiling lightly. She knew why her sister had been reckless, had given her heart away. For love was definitely a prize worth falling for. She kissed his collarbone and nodded, "Tired, but alright." She promised. "Are you ok Thomas?" She asked, pulling back a little so she could look up at him. She had no idea whether this had been good or bad or not, as she had never done it before, and she was worried she had done something wrong.
Joyella broke down into tears, not strong enough to bolt free of her brother. She was terrified of losing her best friend, and right now, she didn't want anything but to be allowed in to see Abby. "She can't die…." She sobbed, clutching Donavon's shirt and using to wipe her eyes. "She can't die… she's my best friend… she can't leave…" She kept whispering brokenly.
Freddie arrived late, as he had been caring for Amalie, and was still in Ireland. But when he arrived, he took one look at the young girl and bit his lip, knowing her chances were slim. But he got to work on her anyways, trying to find out if there was an infection somewhere, or maybe still some water in her lungs.
Ella was clutching her sister's hand, and watching her in tense fear. She wasn't crying yet, she just kept praying that her sister would get better. This situation was stressful enough that she was nearly in shock, and the direness off it had not yet hit her.

Topher drove back home to the small drafty shack in the rough side of town. He sighed taking off his suit jacket knowing his little brother was going to comment and make a big deal of it. He was going to dry clean the suit and then sell it. They needed food and he was going to get a big pay decrease from this incident and he completely deserved it. If April couldn't dance he would never forgive himself. He put his hat back on and walked in "Hey I've got a fresh fish from the market, are you in the mood for stew?"
Thomas smiled softly and cupped her face and kissed her gently "You were amazing Maria...Exquisite and incredible. I love you..." he whispered and played with her hair and nuzzled her neck "Heat helps with the cramping...do you want me to heat up a fur for you?" He was worried about her, he just wanted this to be as wonderful for her as it was for him.
Donavon held his sister close as he sat on the couch, he dried her tears and made her look at him. "Hey...hey...whatever happens, it'll be ok...If she dies it will be horrible and heartbreaking. But I'll be here for you...and if she lives even better but it's all up to the doctors and god now ok?...let's go ride horses, get your mind off of it..."
Abby clenched onto Ella's hand and moaned as the doctor worked on her. She was somewhat coherant and she was scared "I'm sorry Ella...I love you..."

Joshua was busy poring over a book about pirates and lost places, adventures he knew he'd never have, when his brother came back and he grinned, slipping a ribbon in his page before he jumped up and ran to greet him. He immediately noticed the new clothes and his eyes widened as he reached out and ran a finger over the expensive fabrics. "I'd love stew… but… where did you get these!?" He asked, immediately thinking his brother must have been off on some adventure, snagging the clothes from a fat rich man's bottom. For he was still a child at heart, and wanted to dream of fairytales where everyone got a happy ending.
Maria let out a soft sigh in relief, clearly glad that she had at least been acceptable. She closed her eyes and rested her head against his chest again, nodding. Maybe a heated fur would be nice… if he said it would help. She wasn't going to complain… but since he offered… there was no point in denying it. "That would be nice… but I don't want to trouble you into getting up, Thomas. It'll be cold without you here next to me…" She said softly, smiling at him.
Joyella didn't like that at all. Yes, she loved her brother, and she wanted his friendship always. But she wanted to be told that her friend would live for sure, even if that was not realistic. She didn't want him to say that it would be ok even if Abby died. So she curled up on his lap and just held her face in her hands, aching more than she ever had before. "I don't want to go riding…" She whispered brokenly. "I want to see Abby…"
Ella's brow wrinkled in clear concern and she squeezed her sister's hand, hating that she was talking so dismally. "None of that Abby…" She said softly. "You'll get better to spite me another day…" She teased, her mouth quirking up in the shortest of half smiles. "You have to get better again Abby… or who would I share my secrets with? Who would I count on to sneak to parties and set me up with the person who I always needed most? Who could I count on for that wonderful sense of humour and charming smile? Abby, you're going to get better." She insisted. "It could just be an infection that they can give you medicine for…" Ella was just rambling at this point, trying to keep herself strong, and convince them both that everything would be alright.

Topher shook his head amused by his brother's romantic and optimistic heart "I'm not keeping them Josh, as soon as they are dry I'm selling them for some food other then fish and cabbage!" he started the fire filling the crooked rusted pot with water and getting the fish inside with some cabbage and potatoes "Did you take your medication today? I can't get anymore till next week..." he was so worried about his brother, everything he did was for his kid brother.
Thomas smiled and kissed her lovingly, he grabbed a patch of fur and put it near the fire getting it toasty before placing it between her legs "Does that help any?" he asked concerned about her comfort and wanting to help anyway he could. He was so in love with her and it had been a long time since he was this happy. He tugged his tunic and trousers back on and pulled his hair back "Wonder where Jen is..."
Donavon sighed, he hated that he could comfort her. He was never good at white lies, he always told the truth even if it hurt others. He played with her hair and rubbed her back "Ok honey...I'll make sure that you can see her..." he promised and closed his eyes "I just...I'll do everything I can to make sure she lives."
Abby was losing conciousness again, her head turned on the pillow as her heart rate was decreasing. She was dying and Freddie had to do something fast to save her life.

Joshua's excited expression immediately turned into an indignant pout as he scampered to the table and leaned his elbows on it, trying to pull off the best puppy dog face he could muster. "But I like fish and cabbage!" He protested. He didn't. He hated them both. And sometimes when he found slugs among the cabbage leaves, he would have to go excuse himself while he was sick in the toilette. But even though his brother knew, he still tried to hide it, and they didn't talk about it, because pretending was easier. And in all reality, he did really want his brother to keep the fancy clothes. Pretending was easier when his brother looked like a hero. "I did." he promised. Medicine was another thing he hated… but the cough still wasn't going away. Maybe it never would. Not while they were living down here in such a crafty house. "I ate all the medicine just like I'm supposed to." he promised.
Maria watched him as he waited by the fire, and she found that every moment more she spent around him, she came to value his presence more deeply. He was clearly concerned for her comfort, and that touched her. He was caring for her, looking out for her, and she had never had the privilege of having someone do that for her out of the goodness of their own hearts, or out of the simplest love the for the person. "yes… that feels wonderful… thank you." She said honestly, sitting up a little bit as he got dressed. She kept the furs piled around herself, as it was cold, but she allowed her eyes to get used to the light. "She got up early." she said softly. "Mani came by at the crack of dawn to beg her to play with him." She said, smiling lightly. Children could be so sweet.
Joyella found some comfort in his fingers in her hair, and she found that if she pretended she was a small child again, if she pretended that none of this was real, that none of this was actually happening, then she didn't feel so stressed anymore. This was all a dream… and she was really just asleep on her brother's lap like she used to as a young girl. She would wake up and everything would be alright…
Ella's panic started to show as she kept talking, kept trying to convince everyone that it was ok, trying to drown out her mother sobbing nearby, trying to drown out the voices of the nurses as they rushed around, trying every possible method to save Abby that Freddie could think of. As a last minute resort, he thought to drain the sac near her heart of fluid, but honestly, he had tried everything already, and he was starting to resign himself to just helping the poor girl go out painlessly.

Topher shook his head making sure to check the cabbage this time and cleaning it the best he could. He was so sick and tired of getting scraps from the world. He wanted one day to be the hero his brother saw, a man that could find a well paying job. Put food on the table and an acceptable home over their heads, he wanted Josh to go to school instead of just being a newsboy on the corners getting sicker every day. That man could speak to April and be somebody worthwhile for her...he came back to reality putting the food in the chipped china bowl he had found in the dumpster and passed it to his brother before changing into his old rags. He found a gold pocket watch in the pocket of the suit and his heart clenched, he could sell this and earn some good money for them. But it was April's father and he couldn't steal from her...he tucked it in his vest pocket going to give it to her the next morning.
Thomas smiled softly thinking about his little girl playing with the other children laughing gaily with flowers in her hair "that boy certainly likes having her around...I'll have to be more stern when they get older..." He chuckked running a hand through his hair "but thankfully that's a long ways away." He kissed her forehead taking a drink of the rum in the leather pouch hanging on the hook of the tent he passed it to her knowing that it would help the chill they were experiancibg as it was closer to winter.
Abby's vitals immediately stabilized her heart thudding strongly now that it wasn't getting pressed by the fluid. She let out a gasping breath of pain as the procedure was rather painful but she was awake and going to live. Marcoux sighef in relief hugging the doctor tightly "thank you for saving my daughter!" He was in tears, he believed he was going to lose his youngest daughter and was overwhelmed with gratitude.

Joshua carefully stashed his book under the meagre coverings on his bed - it was the only book he owned, and his most prized possession in the whole wide world - and then came to watch his older brother put together their food. He watched only for a moment before he went outside to complete his bit of preparing the food, and that was collecting one of the cartons of water that they drank from, and kept outside to keep cool. He poured them each a bit into the wooden cups they had found in this place, and he set them on the table, returning the carton. Sitting down at their 'table' which was a long board supported by two bricks, Joshua dug into his cabbage and fish, eating it down fast so he'd feel full faster. The taste didn't get any better the longer you let it sit. He turned to see his brother looking wistfully at something in his hand, and he raised his eyebrow. "Why have you been smiling so much today?" he asked, feigning innocence. "Could it be that you finally talked to that angel you speak of in your sleep?" He asked, a devilish grin immediately lighting on his features.
Maria's smile softened a little as she took the rum and sipped at it, enjoying the feeling of warmth that filled her. She would need to make new winter clothes soon, and some for Thomas and Jen as well. The summer clothes would be sold… as they were every year. "All the children love Jennifer because she is someone new to play with. But Mani really is a sweet boy." she said honestly. "He'll be turning seven this fall. I believe that makes him nearly the same age as Jen, right?" She smiled. "No wonder they get along so famously." She rubbed her arms and then slipped out from under the furs, carefully dressing herself in all the layers of fabrics and leathers that a gypsy usually wore. "Are you ready for breakfast?" She asked, tying back her hair in a braid, just as Sada and every other female gyspy did.
Ella was nearly weak with stress by the time they completed the procedure, but when her sister started breathing more easily, and her fever broke, she lay her head by her and wept, too relieved to do anything more than clutch her sister's hand and cry.
Freddie patted Marcoux on the back gently, used to dealing with frazzled and worried family members. "No trouble at all, I'm glad I could help her." He said honestly, packing up his things again. "She should get better now, just no strenuous activities for her for a while." He insisted. "Her heart may take a few weeks to heal, so just take it slow."

Thomas sighed looking at the dreary furniture and meager belongings, he stole that book from the library long ago because his brother wanted to learn to read. He put the golden watch on the table "April...she's the prima ballerina, an amazing kind, lovely and gentle woman. She is the goddess I watch from afar. The clothes are from her, I helped her home and she didn't want me to be in soaked clothing. She is so well off she didn't check the pockets...I wish I could sell it but I need to give it back...it's her father's...but it's nice to think about what we could buy with that money.
Thomas played with her braid lacing a leather strap through the dark weave and rubbing her back "why don't I make breakfast? I can make a really good scone and with raspberry preserves it would be equisite." He started to crumble the grain getting the flour started, using oils and sugar cane he made a soft dough and started to work it twisting it in a braided loaf and putting it on the fire. He made ten of them before running out of dough "we may have to share."
Abby was walking in the garden with Joyella, she would always be weaker then how she used to be but she was better and smiling. Playing with her best friend, she leaned down petting the white palace kitten when she caught the gardener boy!s eye she flushed and turned back to her friend "so they are secretly engaged?! How do you know?"

Joshua leaned his chin in his clasped hands, listening to his brother explain about his love interest, and the watch he had found in the pocket of the fancy clothes. "Well she must have taken a fancy to you to give you such nice clothes!" He said, clearly hoping that his brother would marry a rich woman who would shower them in gifts. He always wanted a nice lady to look up to like a mother. And if his brother got married… well then he would have a pretty mother who could give them chocolate… oh chocolate sounded like a dream…. he had never had any, but he figured it was heavenly for how expensive it was at the stores. And his wonder was evident on his features. "You must woe her! You should become friends first of course… then you can show her the rooftops… and that spot by the docks! And then kiss her! Then she'll love you for sure!" He said, handing over the bowl of food. He was still innocent about the ways of love, and believed in true love's kiss.
Maria's eyes softened, surprised and happy that he was offering to cook breakfast. It was like a dream come true. No one had cooked for her before, and as she sat, watching him work, she found herself smiling the entire time, until the smell of the bread was just too irresistible and she got up and came over to watch the loaf bake. "That looks absolutely divine…" she whispered, resting her head on his shoulder as they sat by the oven. "You call those scones? I don't believe I've had them before. Our bread is usually darker and not that soft in the caravan." She admitted. "But it smells wonderful."
Joyella couldn't contain her bouncing step as she grinned and helped her friend through the garden, catching her up with all the court goings and comings. She beamed and nodded eagerly. "I know for sure! I heard them talking! And the way they look at each other!" She squealed, clasping her friend's hand. "I even…" She lowered her voice, looking around before whispering. "I even saw them sneak into an empty hallway once…. Ella's lipstick was smudged when they came back!" She said, clearly delighted by her findings. "It's for sure!"

Topher shook his head and smirked softly at his brother "That's not how it works Joshua...I am nothing to her, she has many rich suitors and I...I have nothing to give her, she didn't even want me to help her...she looked at me like I was a roach..." he pushed his hair back "I'm not getting married kid, I'm going to work and try to keep us alive through winter..." he pushed the watch back into his pocket "Get ready for bed kid ok? You are going to bed early so that you can ease this cold..."
Thomas smiled softly "It's my mother's recipe. She always made it when I was a boy. I never make it around Sampson because he...he doesn't like anything that involves her. He blames himself for her death...poor kid, you'd like my brother and his wife. They have a gorgeous boy...Calder he's a little older then Jenn and Mani." He watched his girl play and motioned her over "Come here little wild child!"
Abby beamed and sat down on the bench catching her breath "My sister has never been so happy! I love how romantic they are! And we will be sisters!" she said excited and hugged her, Donavon called Joy to lessons and she sighed sitting alone until the gardener boy came over, she smiled softly "hello..."

Joshua didn't like hearing that that wasn't how it worked. He had read his book many times through, and that was how they said it worked in the book… so why not in real life? They could be well off if his brother married! But he knew better than to argue. He didn't want to make life hard for his older brother, who he looked up to like a father and a best friend. "Still, I think you should woe her." he mumbled to himself, slipping away from the table. He padded up the straw filled burlap that he slept on, until all the lumps were even and it was nicer to lay on, and no straw was poking him in the back. Then he bundled his blanket around himself and tucked it up to his chin. "Toph? Can you tuck me in?" he asked quietly, hoping his brother would help bundle him up into the covers like he did some nights when it was colder.
Maria laughed softly, loving to hear about his family, his brother, and his brother's family. "I think I would love to meet your family." She said honestly. And she meant it. Family meant much to the gypsies, it was like an identity, and she wanted to get to know Thomas better, so in her culture, his family was almost part of him, part of what defined him anyway, and definitely part of his childhood.
Jen looked up from where she had been helping the other kids braid flowers into the ponies' tails, and she grinned, skipping over to her father and leaping into his arms. "Hi Daddy! Have a good sleep?" She asked, pecking his cheek. She held out a flower chain and draped it around his neck. "the other kids taught me how to make these!"
Joyella nodded, clasping her hands joyfully. "Yes! Sisters! And soon too! I can not wait!" She said honestly, only getting up when she was called away, and never had there ever been one to pout so deeply as Joyella whenever she got the notion to…
The gardener wiped his hands on a rag and stuffed it in his back pocket, before sitting down by the pretty girl on the bench. He had seen her around the palace lots, and to be honest, he admired her spirit. "Hi." he said, friendly. "I'm Reece. And you are?" he tipped his head to the side, interested.

Topher smiled watching his little brother have such big hopes and dreams he never wanted that to go away. To be broken by poverty and getting kicked in the teeth far too often. He grabbed his blanket and tucked it around his brother tucking it around him so he was as warm as possible "night kid...I love you, don't worry...things can't get much worse..." He slipped his ragged newsboy hat off and smoothed his dark curls identical to his own. He kept the fire going as long as he could before laying on the floor on the patchy rug trying to get his own sleep. He had nightmares all night of April turning into a swan and beibf pierced by an arrow...the crossbow in his hands...
Thomas smiled fingering the chain "it is lovely my little pearl!" He nuzzled her and pecked her cheek leading her to the fire "try some bread my angel, it is very good with fruit preserves." He praised and smiled at Maria draping the chain on her head like a crown. He snuck a kiss and smiled "when we travel back to Tortuga I will write to have my brother dock and meet you."
Abby was surprised by his boldness as he sat near her, she had never really spoken to the help. Her mother gorbid it so it was very strange and a littke exciting to be talking to one now "pleased to meet you Reeve, im Abigale but everyone just calls me Abby. Are you apprenticing with the Gardner?" He was far too young to really have a position yet that much she knew. He made her smile though, she wasn't being treated as an invalid by him, any minute her sister would tug her back inside for risk of sun stroke.

The next morning Joshua woke bright and early just like he always did. He went out to the market to beg for what meagre scrapings he could for breakfast, and always left half of whatever he got on the table for Topher when he woke. He knew his brother had to work long hard hours, so he never woke him up early. That day, however, as he was standing on the corner, shouting out the news and selling papers, he spotted a group of older boys, all laughing and throwing rocks. He cautiously moved closer, knowing he shouldn't get involved… but well… he was a young boy and he was curious. To his dismay, there was a little grey scrap of fluff and ears and sad eyes in the centre of the circle. A tiny puppy no older than a couple months. Scrawny and lonesome looking. The minute Joshua set eyes on it, he knew he related to this dog and couldn't leave it there to die. Barrelling into the group of boys, he scooped up the puppy and ran for it. He was light and fast because he hardly had any meat on his bones, and he was faster than the larger, better fed boys. He got hit with a few thrown stones, but the boys didn't chase him further than a few steps. Joshua knew his brother would be angry. They didn't have enough food nor space for a stray, and he knew Topher would just tell him not to get attached to something that would die come winter… but he knew he could probably sneak it some food… steal it if he had to. So he snuck the pup into the inside pocket of his coat, where it seemed happy to fall asleep, clearly exhausted, and then he went cautiously back to his stand and finished the days work without anyone knowing. He knew he could keep the pup a secret. Or he hoped anyways, as he carried it home.
Jennifer beamed and bounced over to the fire, gingerly pulling off a bun for herself, which she split and spread some preserves over. She just stared at the warm bread for a moment, breathing in the scent before she tried it and practically melted from the wonder it was. "Mhiss ith so ghub!" She said around the food she was eating.
Maria laughed softly at the young girl and shook her head, kissing Thomas back. "I would like that." She said honestly, knowing that she truly did want to meet his family. The fact that they all were pirates was both interesting and touching to her. For just like hers, his family obviously shared the same traditions.
Reece smiled brightly and he nodded, tipping his hat to her. "Pleasure to meet you, Abby." he said brightly. "I just got a work space here under the gardener." he agreed, confirming what she said. "Rather a different life than I'm used to out in the country, but I've been enjoying it. Can be rather dull when you just pull weeds all the time." he looked around, as if making sure no one was looking before he grinned. "If you ask me anyways. But where are you from? You seem like an interesting person. All the other posh people here seem so… well… uptight. No offence or anything. My point was only that you're not like that."

Topher got up and sighed folding up the clothing, he went to the usual peddler he got coin for and sold it for 50 doubloons. Which was a hefty price and would give them fresh food and maybe a mattress. He was elated, buying a small chicken and a loaf of bread for their supper. They never had food this good! He waited until his brother crept into the door, he seemed to be blocking something in his jacket from the cold outside. He moved forward and then saw a tiny sniffing nose peek from the patched up pocket "Josh..." he said slightly annoyed but he couldn't help but smile, his brother had a heart of gold and saved this little mutt's life. He picked it up out of his pocket and got him wrapped up in his mitten and closer to the fire "He's probably hungry, feed him some chicken...I'll get some milk from old bessy." he left for the small barn and went to the onery old cow and got some milk putting it in the pail and pouring it in a dish for the pup.
Thomas smiled and fed Maria some bread and jam, he waited anxiously for her to chew and process it. When she smiled his whole being let out a relaxed breath and he smiled pecking her cheek and going to help the men with the elk they brought back. He wanted to be a part of the caravan, treated like an equal not like a traitor and stranger.
Abby smiled lightly and laughed "I used to pull the weeds...it made my sister embarrassed that I was doing the gardener's work. But I enjoyed keeping a little patch of land empty and healthy. I wanted some seeds but I couldn't ask for any without being caught." she played with her laced glove feeling flushed and hesitant to be admitting that to this new boy. She always wanted a flower bed, filled with wild flowers not cultivated to be perfect and fake. She didn't like the uniformed look of the palace, roses, roses and more roses it got boring.

Joshua snuck into the house quietly, heading for the bed, where he hoped to stash the puppy and keep it safe and warm and in hiding. Until his brother strode over and discovered him straight away. Joshua's face clearly looked dismayed, as if he was resigning himself to having to send the puppy away again. And tun his brother picked up the puppy and wrapped it up by the fire and the most brilliant smile lit up Joshua's face. "Right away!" he said, carefully going to the chicken, his stomach rumbling as he sliced off a small piece and came over to the pup. He lay the little wrapped bundle on his lap and held the chicken in front of its nose, waiting patiently as it sniffed it, and then presumed to gnaw on the piece and swallow it. It immediately looked more perky, and Joshua beamed, holding up the dish of milk near it so it could lap at it slowly. "That's it…" he crooned, holding the bowl steady and looking up at his brother. "Where on earth did you get all this wonderful grub?" he asked, clearly thrilled.
Maria's eyes widened when she suddenly found her mouth filled with something warm and buttery and tasting of sweet summer strawberries. She closed her eyes, a smile lighting up her face as she allowed herself to enjoy such a strange wonderful flavour. When she had finished her piece of the scone, she looked at Thomas, her eyes wide with delight. "That is a little piece of heaven!" She insisted, watching as he left the tent. She was proud of him, for making an effort, even though she knew her family would be reluctant to accept him so soon. Her cousin was still scowling at him, but some of the older men helped instruct him on how to skin the animal and portion out the meat, and one kinder soul smiled at him and told him his name. He was Mani's father.
Reece chuckled, clearly amused and happy that there was someone else who appreciated hard work. "That is the most wonderful thing I've ever heard! Finally someone else who isn't afraid to get their hands dirty and actually accomplish something." He tipped his head slightly, as if studying her. "I could probably get you a little patch of garden and some seeds, if you told me which ones you liked. I have a garden I'm allowed to design, and you could certainly have a portion of it." He offered, not minding at all to share with this lovely cultured girl who was so much more like him than he had first thought.

Topher watched his brother coddle and coo the small ragamuffin of a dog. It was actually a good experiance for Joshua to care for another being. He had always been cared for by Topher it was nice to see it paid forward to this little ball of scrappy fur "I sold the suit for 50 pieces of gold!" He eagerly lifted the sheet covering the new large mattress, it was big enough for the two of them to share with plenty of space between them. "I still have 30 left but I thought we could save some...but enjoy our feast! We have two more in the ice box!" He was referring to the chickens. Gold could pay for so much...the watch was probably worth a fortune.
Thomas worked hard following instructions exactly and just being open to learn from these wise Elders. He smiled at the man who seemed to be his age, they both were part of collecting the fur for the women "im Thomas, I know you've probably heard my name before but I thought it best to just tell you directly. I've seen your boy with my Jenn, handsone strong lad she adores him. Can't keep her in bed longer then sunrise!"
Abby bit her lip wishing with all her heart that she could agree to that, being out in the sun digging in the dirt without worrying the entire palace "Reece I wish I could with all my heart, you don't understand...my sister will probably be down here any minute fretting and ushering me inside like I'll die...im allowed an hour a day of sun...that is it. It wouldn't be fair for you to do that work and I not contributing:.." She sighed as Ella called her in frantically. She grabbed her hat and nodded to him "good day Reece, it was wonderful talking to you."

Joshua's mouth gaped open as he took in the mattress. It was a real bed… a real soft bed for them both! The puppy had fallen asleep in his arms so he carefully lifted it and put it to the side, gently laying it down by the fire before he jumped up, running over to the mattress and poking it hesitantly. It was soft and thick and plushy and he grinned, hesitantly turning to sit on the edge. He sank into it like a pillow, and it was all even, with nothing poking up at his back, like on his little straw sack. "Oh… it's so soft…" he breathed, running his hands over the fabric. His stomach growled then and he beamed, bouncing away from the mattress to sit at the table. "Well… let's eat then." He said, waiting expectantly for his brother to carve out portions of the chicken for them both.
The man looked up and smiled at the newcomer, the pirate. He had seen how Thomas had been making an effort, and he valued that. He could only imagine how hard it would have been to lose a wife, and he didn't blame Thomas for coming back to Sada's home people, and falling in love with her sister. "I'm Habjiar, but most call me Habi or Habs." he said, holding out a hand to shake. "My Mani is very entranced by your girl." he agreed, working side by side with Thomas. "I talks to me all the time about the stories she tells him of the sea and the lands you have visited." He said. "Those two do get along quite well."
Reece had been about to explain that he would be working his garden anyways, so she would just be helping him out, not creating more work, when she suddenly jumped up at the sound of someone calling her name, and made to leave hastily. Sighing, and disappointed to see her go, he waved, calling after her. "I hope to see you again soon!" Before he got back to work.
Ella hugged her sister, worried as she always was for her now. "How did you find the gardens? Different today?" She asked, knowing they didn't change between today and the day before, she was just teasing her sister. Then she whispered, "Can you help me in my fitting for the wedding dress? Donavon is making the announcement of our engagement today, and the seamstresses want to start work on the dress already!"

Topher watched his brother analyze the bed like a dog sniffing out his new territory. He laughed at how he plopped down and that adorable crooked grin "im glad you like it! We just have to make sure we don't sleep the day away on such a marvelous invention!" He pat the new pillows before going back to the table and carving the chicken evenly. He had roasted some potatoes and put those out as well. Along with the butter, cheese and bread. His eyes watered at how grateful he was for such a feast! They wouldn't be hungry or sick the next day it was miraculous and he hugged his brother tightly against him.
Thomas chickled softly shaking his head "she's heard them so many times im sure she has them memorized...pirates, gypsies...both story tellers, rebels in their own times. Free from society and bonds..." He said wistfully touching the soft fur "this'll be warm when this first snow comes...I worry about my girl she's never experianced snow or cold...we always migrated to the tropical climates during winter..."
Mani was sitting with Jen trying to teach her the chords he knew on the lute, he moved her fingers over the strings holding the down softly and helping her strum with her other hand "that's it...you learn very quick." His Englush was sparse and not very fluent but he tried around her.
Abby sighed softly "id rather stay much longer...and do other things besides sit...at least I had someone to converse with today." She smiled brightly at the news "oh that's wonderful! Yes of course don't want you looking like a giant fluffy cake!"

Joshua hugged Topher, his grin huge as he glanced back at the bed. He didn't care of they slept all night and all day. It would be wonderful if it was the most he had ever slept so far. And he didn't even care if he missed a day of standing on the street doing the news. Actually… he would care. But it was nice to think about the possibilities of just sleeping all day. He sat down at his chair then and got started on the chicken. Then he tried the bread, and soon he was engrossed in the food not able to focus on anything but the most wonderful tastes that this food was. "This is amazing!" He exclaimed. He had never felt so happy in all his life. He never even knew food to be this good. "This must be what chocolate tastes like…" He commented, patting his full stomach. It was the most wonderful feeling.
Habi nodded, still working on collecting the furs in the right place and piles, sorting out the colours, and the different thicknesses so they could be later made into winter clothing. "Yes, these will make much warmer clothing than the fabrics we use during the summer. Don't worry. We always provide enough to keep everyone warm. I'm sure the elders will make allowances to provide warmer clothes for you both as you make the transition into a different climate." he promised.
Jen was biting her bottom lip in concentration, as she focused on perfecting how she was playing, as he made suggestions. "Thank you!" She said when he complimented her. She had worked hard to learn this skill, and was glad that she had his approval. She could speak a little of his language now as well, so she tried her best to do it whenever possible.
Ella raised an eyebrow as they walked together to the fitting room. "Someone to talk to, hm?" She asked, guessing what might have happened by the smile on her sister's face. "Could that someone have been male and attractive?" She asked softly, as such talk wasn't really permitted in a public setting. But she grinned all the same as they arrived at the seamstresses' room, and she stood on top of the box. "What style do you think I should go for?" She asked, as she honestly valued her opinion.

Topher smiled softly and pulled out a little chocolate truffle wrapped in gold wrapping. He handed it to his brother excited for the look on his face when he tried it for the first time. "I think you'll find that they are very different yet equally delicious..." he munched on his chicken and shook his head amazed at the warmth and how full he would fill "I have to leave soon, so be good and watch the puppy."
Thomas fingered the soft wolf fur, he nodded and smiled "Thank you, I appreciate that. I love how it's a family here. I know that I'm not wanted but I'm glad that my girl and my dear Maria are loved and taken care of. That's all I could wish for."
Mani smiled and taught her a new chord, he started singing softly. He had a wonderful tenor voice and it was so sweet and gentle. He sang of love and the woods, the winter years and the mother of nature. He smiled softly and motioned for her to sing.
Abby flushed embarrassed and smiled bashfully "Well yes...he wants me to have my own garden. Oh Ella please! I just want to live and play like I used to, I'm not sick...and Reece sees my old spirit and he appreciates it!" she looked at the patterns "That one is pretty...you would look thin and graceful...like a winter elf in that book!"

Joshua just stared at the little gold wrapped treat for a moment, almost not believing his eyes. Was that chocolate? Actual, real chocolate!? He gingerly picked it up and sniffed it. The smell was rich and sweet, and nothing like he'd ever experienced before. Wasting no time in unwrapping it, he bit off a small piece, hoping to make it last. It was a sugary delight that melted on his tongue, and he couldn't imagine something more heavenly in the whole wide world. "So this is chocolate…." he breathed, his eyes closing. He looked up when he had finished his small bite, wrapping up the rest to save for later. "Where are you off to?" He asked, gathering up a few chicken scraps to feed to the puppy later. No bones, just mostly fat and skin and some little pieces of dark meat they could spare.
Habi nodded, knowing the man found it hard to fit in, and he could relate to that. Some of the other men looked down on him just for even talking to Thomas. But he didn't care. He wanted to make him feel welcome. "Give them time… eventually everyone will accept you. You are a good man, and I'm glad you've joined us." he smiled.
Jen was surprised when Mani started to sing, but his voice was so soulful and rich, and it went with the lute perfectly, so soon she relaxed and enjoyed the wonderful tones of his voice. Then she picked up what bits of the song she knew, and sang in harmony with him, enjoying how easy the note pattern came to her.
Ella smiled knowingly, her eyes dancing with delight. It was good to see her little sister alive and really living for something again. Yes, she wanted her sister not to die. But not dying and living were two completely different things. "Hey it's ok…" She promised. "I understand. Just because I worry for you, doesn't mean I don't want you to have fun." she looked at the pattern her sister pointed out. The dress was rather elegant. Not poofy or frilly like all the other gowns. It was more… regal… and Abby was right… it looked almost… well… like something an elf out of a fairytale would wear. It was beautiful. "Nice choice." She agreed. "Now… what about the veil? Long? Short? Mid length? Thick? Gauze? My… there are so many choices…"

Topher ruffled his hair and grabbed his coat heading back out into the cold the gold pocket watch clenched in his hand. He got stopped by two guys larger then him, they punched him in the gut over and over and stole his coat but he wouldn't let the pocket watch go. Shivering in the cold he coughed begging for anybody to find him before losing consciousness the snow starting to fall.
Thomas smiled "im grateful for you and your boy's friendship." He said honestly "so do you have any other family besides your son?" He asked peeling away the skin from the fur and petting the large pile.
Mani smiled brightly glad she was singing along. He handed her the lite as he went to help the men with the fur his father morioning him over with that look he dare not disobey.
Abby looked at all of them and made faces "something light and see-through with a lace design...elegant like the dress not too long because it'll get tangled with the train."

April smiled bashfully and she looked down at her clasped hands, pulling the blanket up higher around her. It was true, her sister didn't even know who this boy was that she had started to fall for. "His name is Christopher." she admitted, taking the glass and downing the pill in one gulp as she grimaced. "Thanks for putting up with and taking care of me." she said seriously, setting the glass down on the night stand. "I mean it, thank you."
One of the other guys who worked at the theatre was passing by and he recognized Topher. "Christopher?" He asked, incredulous as he rolled him over gently. "My gosh you look bad…" He scooped him up and brought him back to his own place, tucking him into a bed and asking a nurse to come to assess his injuries. She bound up a scrape and tried to help the bruises, before saying that all the injuries were minor surface wounds. Topher's host nodded, reassured that he would be all right, and bid her to leave, before he too left Topher alone to rest.
"I don't any longer…" he said softly, sighing as if in regret. "I had a wife once. But she was stolen from me in a plague that wiped out a town a few years back." he said honestly, looking up then as his son ran over. "So I understand your loss." He smiled at Mani, ruffling his hair. "And this is my ever so talented son." he said, clearly proud of him. "Come to help? You can start sorting out the bones into usable piles."
Jen watched as he suddenly jumped up and ran off, as if he was scared of her or something all of a sudden and she got up, looking quite sad, and wandered back to their trailer, having nothing to do. Unfortunately, being alone, some of the older teenage boys decided it would be a good time to pick on Jen. And they taunted her, throwing rocks at her and pushing her around, calling her names until she retreated and curled up under the cart sobbing and afraid. When they couldn't get her to come out again, they grew disinterested and left.
Ella looked over the image, and decided that that would probably look good with the thinner majestic sort of dress, especially since it would have an extra long train, and she did have a point about not wanting it tangles. "Alright. Light and lace designs it is." She handed the book to the seamstress who nodded at her design choices and got right to work at pinning fabric onto her while she stood with her arms out. "So tell me more about this boy." She said after a moment, still curious. "Did you just meet him? Or had you seen him before?"

Topher woke up sometime later, he was shocked to see the nice furnishings around him and the soft covers over his battered body. He looked around wide eyed until he saw the glint of the pocket watch on the nightstand. He scooped it up tucking it away before slowly exiting the bed feeling every bruise and twinges on his sore body. But Joshua was home alone and he couldn't stand the thought. He saw his friend come in and sighed in relief "thought some rich bloke kidnapped me for their daily act of service..." He teased clapping his hand on his shoulder.
Thomas noxded sympathetically "im very sorry to hear that...it is difficult being a single parent." He smiled at the boy with the long chestnut colored hair covering his eyes and mischeivous smile. He got to work on the bones until he heard the rowdy brothers picking on Jenn. Quickly he grabbed a sharp bone and charged after them. Thomas blinkef confused but followed the boy seeing his girl curled up and sobbing he saw red anger and crawled underneath to hold her "hey hey...I've got you...I won't let them hurt you again...that littke friend is chasing them with a makeshift knife. He doesn't say much but he cares for you that's for sure.
Abby flushed embarrased to be talking about this with her older sister "I've seen him before but we have never conversed. Joy left for lessons so I said hello...apparently that was the cue he needed because he sat by me and had a wondeful conversation. He's very kind and he offered me a space for a garden...though I know you probably think it's unwise..." She got quiet at this point staring at her white boots saying nothing else.

Saun grinned and shook his hand. "Glad to see you awake, man, you were looking pretty bad there…" he shook his head disapprovingly. "What were you doing wandering around the sketchy part of town alone? It's no wonder you got your senses knocked out of you. " He scolded, maneuvering him back towards the bed. "You need to rest, and you are going to rest until I'm sure the maid has got some food in you, and that I insist on." He said seriously, calling the maid who bustled in with a loaf of bread and warm soup. "You're too scrawny anyways." He said seriously as the maid broke the bread and handed the two halves to Topher.
Jennifer looked up as her father crawled under the cart after her, and she immediately curled against his chest, hugging him and crying quietly. No one had ever called her such mean names before, and not being used to it, it had really hurt her innocent spirit. "Those boys said unkind things, papa… were they true? Am I ugly and short?" She asked, sniffling and rubbing at her eyes with her sleeve. "I hope Mani hurts them good." She said softer, as if knowing she shouldn't say such violent things like that, but she couldn't help it, not when they had hurt her so badly, and she had been so afraid. Now, in her father's arms, was she starting to slowly calm again.
Ella nodded, standing fairly still for the seamstresses as they pinned on fabric, clipped and snipped and adjusted, and then pinned it on again. "I see… a garden hm?" She asked, looking over at her younger sister then. Abby clearly seemed hopeful for a garden, and Ella's heart softened. Who was she to keep that from her? She wanted her sister to have all the joys in the world, and this seemed to be one of them that Abby wanted personally. "I think a garden might be nice. But no tending to it in the rain, and no longer than an hour even on sunny days, hear?" She insisted.

Topher sighed taking the bread "if you insist I stay then you have to retreive my little brother Joshua, he can't be home alone...he's probably scared, please...let him enjoy such good food as well." He automatically portioned his food to share with his brother as he always did. What was he doing in that area "I live just a few steps from where you found me...I was heading home..."
Thomas shook his head upset "no mi Corazon...you are beautiful and you are young, short is just your size until you grow up...they shouodnt have said such things..." She heard Mani yelling and punched out one of the boys and dug the bone in the other's leg "Dont you dare come near her again! Or I'll set my dad on you!"
Abby looked up hopeful and grinned higging hed sister as she got measured "oh thank you Ella! Thank you! I will go tell Reece!" She ran back outside to the roses he was pruning "Reece! She's allowing me to have a garden of my own!" She said eagetly out of breath from running.

He frowned, wondering why his little brother was at home alone. Was it just the two of them? And why on earth wast this home in the sketchy part of town? "I'll send for your brother at once." He promised, calling in the footman. "Just tell him your address, and what he should say to your brother so that he trusts him." he insisted, surveying his battered friend. "I'm certainly not letting you go until you are cared for." He insisted. It didn't sit well with him that his friend was in such a low part of town, however, he knew how opposed he was to charity, so he didn't say anything.
Jennifer sniffled and tucked her face against her father, trying to convince herself that he was right, that she was actually pretty. But it was hard to do after all those mean things the boys had said. They were still fresh in her mind. She heard Mani shouting at the boys, and she curled up tighter, wishing she could hide from the whole wide world. Mani was her only friend… but he had run off from her without saying anything a moment ago, so she wasn't even sure if he wanted to be her friend anymore. "I'm scared." She mumbled.
Ella shook her head, amused as her sister ran off again, leaving her to deal with all the fabric pinned to her. "Don't stay out too long!" She called, sighing.
Reece looked up from the middle of his work, and he grinned when he heard what she said. "Oh that's absolutely wonderful!" he stated. He put his shears back into his tool bucket and motioned her over to the patch of earth he was supposed to plant and take care of. "Want to help me start planting some flowers? I've got a whole bunch in pots in the toolshed, and if you don't see any you like, I could have more ordered." he offered, pointing to the shed.

Topher sighed softly and shook his head "Say that the pirates attacked and we are meeting on treasure island." he said seriously knowing Joshua would know that it was him talking. He closed his eyes coughing his stomach hurting like it did when it was hungry but it was worse this time.
Thomas held her close and shook his head "Don't be honey...I've got you and that boy is very very upset. He is upset at himself for leaving. But, his father called him over he had to obey. I like his father he's a good man...hey? so what do you think if Maria was your mama?"
Abby followed him and gasped at the beautiful colors "Oh my..." she gently touched the petals and started to grab the pots of the ones she wanted "Can't I just have all of them? They are so lovely, I can't just choose a few!"

Saun nodded, sending away his footman to retrieve the boy. He was worried about Topher though, and even though the nurse had already bandaged him up, he was still concerned that something was wrong with his friend. So he swallowed and rang up the doctor, requesting for him to come and check on Topher just to make sure everything was alright. When he got on the phone, a small boy with dark hair and big eyes, who was clutching a scrawny puppy ran into the room and climbed onto Topher's bed. Saun smiled, leaving the two alone and nodding his thanks to his footman.
Joshua lay the puppy in his brother's arms, and then hugged him. "What happened?" He asked softly, clearly shaken up. "I was so worried when you didn't come back…"
Jen nodded, hoping he was right. The thought of Mani being upset for her sake both warmed her heart and hurt it. It meant he cared, but she also hated to have him distressed. He was such a nice friend after all, her only friend actually. "I'm glad you're making friends too, Daddy." She said softly. Her eyes grew a little wider then. "I would have a mother? A real mother?" she asked, shocked and thrilled all at once. "Oh papa! I would love that!" she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.
Reece beamed, glad she liked the flowers he had stocked up so far. He chuckled as she started to fill her arms with pots. "Well… these all need to go into the ground somewhere, you certainly can help me find spots for them." He offered, pulling out a wheelbarrow. "Help me load this up? It'll carry things easier than your arms." he said gently, winking at her as he started to place pots into the wheelbarrow, carefully so as not to bend any flowers, or break any of the pots.
Only an hour into her dress appointment, Ella started to feel lightheaded from standing around in a hot dress getting more and more fabric pinned on. Eventually she had to ask for a break, to continue tomorrow as she escaped to her temporary rooms that were hers until the wedding, and she washed her face and tried to cool off, resting in bed. But the lightheadedness still wasn't going away, and now her stomach had grown upset. Worried, Ella called for a maid to bring her up some ginger water to try and settle her stomach, as well as hot water bottles and another blanket. She cancelled all her appointments for the evening and drew the curtains closed, hoping Abby had the sense to come in soon on her own, for she wasn't well enough to go fetch her.

Thomas pet the scrawny dog and laid him by the pillow as he held his brother "the Rank gang got to me...tried to take the pocketwatch but I wouldn't let him. I was a regular Robin hood Joshua you would have been proud of your big brother."
The footman ushered Saun to the side "sir...the living quarters are unbearable. There is one mattress in a cold damp shed with a block of wood for a table...the boy was eating a small bit of chicken and looked like he was going to cry for joy...I've never seen such a pitiful sight."
Thomas smiled rubbing her back and kissing her hair "I love you...Maria is very excited to be your mother...we are a family little one and no bully can take that away..." He led her out of the dark space and back to the covered tent where Maria was "can you tend those little wounds?"
Mani was sitting quietly waiting to be scolded by his father for being violent, the boy had to have stitches from the sharp bone Mani stabbed him with. "Father...I had to defend her honor."
Abby watched how gentle he was being with them, it was amazing to watch such strong tanned hands become graceful and delicate. She pulled out a little purple pansy and created a hole tucking it into the ground and patting the durst around it "there you go little one..."
Donavon was reported by the maids of her condition, he quickly went to her room worried sick. He smoothed her hair back frowning "love what is it? What ails you?" He was scared it was something serious, he was going to announce their engagement that night.

Joshua was so scared for his brother's sake, but at the same time, he was proud to have such a heroic big brother. He hugged him, tucking his small face against him as he tried to just focus on the fact that his brother was there, and alive. "You're a hero, and I am proud of you. I have always been proud to have you as my big brother." he said quietly.
Saun frowned, deeply troubled by this. His own home was rather modest, and could not hold Topher and his brother permanently, but he knew it was better than a dank shack. "Have their belongings fetched. They can stay here until I figure out some other arrangement for them." he said seriously, not about to let his friend freeze to death over the winter.
Jennifer smiled a little then, nodding. She had a family now. They would take care of her. She crawled out with her father and followed him back to the tent where Maria's eyes widened at the sight of her. She immediately started fussing over the small girl, tending to the small scrapes the stones had given her. "My my… already collecting battle wounds, are we?" she asked. "Such a brave girl." She didn't ask how she got them, she was just gentle, and soon Jennifer started to soothe and smile again.
Habi sighed, clasping his hands together as he sat down heavily on a wooden keg. "You know we work hard to keep peace among our family. Family is the most important thing, Mani, you've known that since you could walk." he looked over at his son, hating that he had to be punished for something he thought was the right thing to do. "I know you were defending her, and that was the right thing to do, Mani, but tearing a boy's leg open? Jari needs six stitches now because of you…. the elders will not let that go unpunished…"
Reece wheeled all the pots over to the patch of earth, and then got to work beside her, digging shallow holes, and carefully sliding each flower out of its pot and into his hands, before lowering it into the ground, patting dirt firmly around it, and then giving it some water. He couldn't help but glance at Abby every now and again. He admired her spirit and found it rather attractive in a woman.
Ella cracked an eye open when Donavon came into her room, bringing light and noise with him, and her head pounded. She winced and closed her eyes again, shaking her head. "Don't worry." She whispered. "I'm alright… sometimes I get this sick on specific days of the month." She didn't tell him, however, that it was not her time of the month, so she knew that couldn't be the reason. She just didn't want him to worry, not over something she hoped would pass in a few hours.

Topher sighed and rubbed his back and played with his shaggy black hair "I've always been proud to have such a caring and amazing little brother...hey, this is the warmest we will get this winter, isn't this great? Feel that warm fire and soft blanket..." He said softly trying to get him to sleep. He was feeling that pain again and winced rubbing his side as he breathed through the pain.
The footman nodded "I already picked the supplies up, it was a ragged adventure book and a photo of what I assume to be the mother...that's it...the rest is on their backs."
Mani looked down ashamed that he disgraced his father's name and would be punished for this. He looked down at his brown shoes caked in mud "I...I know papa im sorry, I deserve whatever the punishment the elders choose. But Jeri deserved far more then this...he traumatized Jenn...she was hiding and crying...she's a good girl and my friend I will defend her with my life if needs be. No one else has their back dad, you know that."
Abby was tending each flower, she smiled but was exhausted by the time they were done, she took deep breaths and then slowly stood begore crumbling back into his arms. She was weak her heart hadn't worked this hard since the surgery. She felt embarrased that he had to see her like a weak violet shivering and weak.
Donavon shook his head "you had that time two weeks ago...I recall because you snapped at me everyday and wanted sweets...so this isn't that. Should I call a doctor? What are your symptoms?"

Saun's jaw clenched and he nodded, amazed by the poverty that could be found in this city. "I see. Thank you very much, you've been extremely helpful." He glanced into the room again. "I'll try to help them as best I can."
Habi sighed softly, kneeling beside his boy. "I'm not saying you shouldn't defend her. Jennifer seems to be a very kind girl, and certainly undeserving of the taunts those boys were giving her." he looked up at him. "And they will get punished too. But next time, please don't physically hurt anyone, Mani. There are other ways to defend her without disturbing the peace in our family." he said gently, taking his hand. "Come now, the elders have requested to see you. And no speaking back to them." he warned, knowing that would only anger the aged folks of their clan.
Reece wasn't expecting her to topple over, but when she started to, he immediately put his work down and moved to catch her, slowly lowering her to the nearest bench. "I suppose we should have taken a break earlier." He mused, looking at her in a clearly worried manner. "You'll be ok, though, right? Do you need anything? Is there any way I can help?" he was keeping her steady on the bench right now, but he felt so hopelessly useless otherwise.
Ella sighed softly, but there was a light smile on her face as she closed her eyes again. "You pay close attention." She noted. "I don't know… but Donavon, I don't want you to worry. It's just been a bit of nausea and lightheadedness so far. Sensitivity to noise… it could be a million different things, and it will probably pass within the hour." she insisted, not wanting to be fussed over or worried about.

Mani nodded and swallowrd going into the tent quietly his head down in respect for the group of older men circling around the fire. He knew not to be the first one to say sonething for that would be disrespectful. He should say nothing until allowed.
Abby shook her head her face pink in embarrassment "I...just, my heart is weak which is why my sister is so strict. I should have gone inside long before now. But for once I felt like myself again...that i wasn't the invalid everyone sees me as."

One of the elders, an aged man with more frown lines than smile ones, stepped towards Mani, his face solemn. "Had you been older, child, we would have banished you from our family, never to be allowed to return." he said gravely, for family was what mattered most to the gypsies, and this fate was worse than death. "But since you are still a child, you have been sentenced to be an invisible for the week." he stated. He took charcoal and marked his hand, leading him out to the gypsies again. "This boy has been marked as an invisible for the week. Anyone who speaks to or acknowledges him will join him and extend his sentence." he stated, all the gypsies looking horrified, Mani's father included. The elders all nodded, satisfied, and then returned into their tents to deal with the two boys as well.
Reece nodded, wondering what it would be like to have such a weak heart. "That must be horrible, I'm sorry." he shook his head, helping her stand and assisting her back towards the door. "I shouldn't have kept you so long… I'm sorry…" He said, looking very guilty and apologetic, and clearly worried as he let a few of the maids take her and start to bustle away. He waved as she disappeared, and then sighed, going back out to his garden. The poor girl… he hadn't meant to have her get hurt…
((Donavon?))

Mani fekt tears prickle his eyes but he didn't look at anyone as he headed to the tent far from the others. The shunned lived there during their sentance. He was grateful that they didn't send him away but he was just a little boy and he was going to miss his dad and Jenn...he sniffed wiping his eyes trying to be brave as he tried to get dinner started.
Thomas looked at Maria in shock "we just have to let the boy alone?...he's a young boy how is he supposed to care for himself?" He whispered so he wouldn't get into trouble. He held Jen in his arms knowing she was going to be upset about it as well.
Abby was humiliated by it all, she just wanted to be the active girl she once was. Reece would never look at her the same way again, he wouldn't allow her to be with the garden he'd be afraid like the rest of them. She sniffed curling up on the pillow and crying softly needing that moment to be selfish and feel sorry for herself.
Ren was tugging Joyella to himself playfully as they were betrothed and getting to know eachother better "princess you have two left feet." He whispered to her as they were taking ballroom lessons rather clumsily one might add. They were friends from the start but as teenagers they just didn't want to be set up and doted upon.
Donavon pushed her hair back concerned "should I call a doctor?...I know I needlessly worry over everything but you are not one to get sick." He reminded kissibg her forehead and squeezing her hand "maybe all the stress you've been going through is catching up?"

Maria had watched the sentencing with a grim sort of look, and she sighed. "Not even just let him alone. Pretend he doesn't exist. It's our way. An adult would have been banished forever." She said softly, the sadness clear in her voice. "Mani is a strong child, and capable of caring for himself."
Jenn had been staring after Mani, watching as he walked dejectedly away from the camp. Only just then did she break from her stupor and come to her senses. "No they can't do that!" She cried, very near tears. "It's not his fault! He was protecting me! Maria make them undo it! Make them let him back again!"
Reece didn't think any less of Abby, if anything he felt worse about himself, not having noticed her needs and helped her. He hadn't wanted to hurt her, and now… she was in bed, and it was his fault. He potted a small flower, a lushly coloured one, and told the maid to bring it up to cheer her up. He knew she would know who it was from.
Joyella smirked, stepping on his foot purposely then. "Do I? Or is this all just a show, and I'm just enjoying stepping all over you?" She asked. Their instructor called out to correct them both and reprimand them and Joyella rolled her eyes, straightening her back and trying harder. "I can be graceful when I want to be." She insisted.
Ella sighed, knowing he was right. She wasn't one to get sick. But their engagement was being announced tonight. She didn't want to ruin that with a simple head cold or flu. "Maybe…" She admitted softly, not wanting to come across as weak. She thought she had been managing the stress just fine. She wanted to manage the stress fine. She wanted to be the perfect queen. But it had been a lot of work so far, and their engagement hadn't even been announced yet.

Thomas winced at the severity and shook his head "It isn't right...just watch, those boys that cruelly hurt Jenn will get off easy because she's not part of the 'family'" he made quotes with his fingers and kissed her cheek "Honey we must let him be...if you bring it up his punishment will increase and cause him more harm. I know you care deeply for the boy but...we have to follow the laws and guidelines." he looked over at Habi and pat his shoulder trying to be of comfort.
Abby softly smiled as the plant came in. It brightened up the room and brightened her spirits. It was the nicest thing she had ever received. She looked over at her sweet parakeet with the colored feathers and took one of the newly shed ones and tied her ribbon around it and gave it to the maid to give to him.
Ren laughed and smiled "I can imagine it." he started to dance with her and spun her lifting her gracefully and smiled "The cooks left a pie on the sill, do you want to act childish with me?" he grinned like an imp and led her to the back under the window the steam coming off of the crust.
Donavon played with her hair and took her hand kissing it as he pulled the ring from his pocket "What do you think? Might as well show you...it's just for show anyways." he pecked her cheek and played with her golden curls "We shall go on a trip...just us, no responsibility or duties...what do you think?"

April had a taxi take her to the theatre for the first time that day, and she was so thrilled to get out and into society again. She was still walking with crutches, but her ankle no longer hurt so much as before and she was able to walk around alright. When she got the the theatre, explaining what happened to her leg was a nightmare. Everyone gave her clearly upset looks, and not for her sake, but because the dance was now compromised because of her. The director was clearly disappointed, but he was kind about it, telling her to get better soon, and be back for the next performance. She made sure to talk to everyone, get in the pleasantries. She wasn't quite sure what to say when she saw Sam. For his expression clearly said he was upset at her. "Where have you been?" He asked, guiding her into their usual spot in the changerooms.
"Hurt, Sam, I've been resting." She said honestly.
"I've missed you." He purred.
She was so conflicted right now, as always, drawn to the attractive and charming Sam, whom had been her lover for nearly a year. And at the same time, as he cradled her head and kissed her, she briefly thought that she was better than this, that she should push away the hand that was creeping up her leg, that she should end this now before it got worse.
Maria sighed, not denying it. Their people had ancient customs, customs that wouldn't be broken, not for a while and not without a lot of persuading. The elders were very set in their ways, after all.
Jen shook her head, clearly distraught, and she ran away to their tent, curling in the furs and crying. "I'm so sorry. My fault." She mumbled, wishing she could see Mani again, hear him sing, watch him work. He was her best friend. Very nearly her only friend now that everyone else was growing up and getting more suspicious of her like their parents were.
Habi's jaw clenched but he nodded lightly in Thomas's direction at his consolatory gesture. His eyes were dark as he watched the two older boys exit the tent, grbling about how they had to shovel manure for a week. His boy was young and alone, and they got off with just mucking duty?
Reece had been eating his lunch when he got a feather wrapped in a bow, and he turned it over in his hands, smiling. Taking a scrap of cloth, and some ink, he wrote her a quick message. 'I'd send you something else pretty, but nothing else is as lovely as you. Your friend'. He rolled it up and tied it with twine, sending It back to her. He hoped she got better soon. He was lonely gardening with all the other dull palace workers.
Joyella's grin was as wide as the crescent moon and she nodded eagerly, slipping out of their dance class and through the back hallways to the window. "I'll always be childish." She promised softly as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, sighing at the smell. She knew she could get in trouble for this, but she did it anyway, reaching up to snag the pie from the shelf, giggling as she ran away through the gardens with it. "Keep up!" She called to Ren.
Ella's eyes widened when she saw the luxurious stone. She would get to wear that around? Well it certainly would make her friends jealous. "It's quite beautiful, Donavon, even if it is just for show." She promised, fingering the band. A trip he said? "Honeymoon, you mean? Or before then?" She inquired, interested in what he thought. She was still rather nauseous, but feeling better because of free chance to talk with him.

Thomas ran to his girl and held her close "I've got you..." he held her close and nuzzled her cheek "A week will go by in no time. And guess what? We get to see your uncle Sampson and aunt Jackie won't that be great?" he played with her hair trying to get her to smile.
Mani was trying to stay warm it was getting to be a cold winter he didn't know how to set a fire and he wasn't allowed near the hot coals. He started to cry missing his dad and missing the warmth of his family. He didn't regret what he did but he didn't think it was fair that those boys would still hurt Jenn.
Abby read the letter and felt her heart lift in joy, she had to see him. She got in her wheelchair she used when she was healing. She rolled to her balcony and smiled seeing him garden. She sent her parakeet down to get his attention "Oh Romeo...Romeo where art thou Romeo?"
Ren laughed and quickly ran after her and tackled her tickling her as they rolled in the grass "Hey you better share that pie!"
Donavon smiled and kissed down her hand and ring finger "The real ring is the one I gave you...I love you and I mean a pre-wedding vacation where we can make love for the first time...no pressure just be together and I love you...so much..."

Jen tucked her face against her father, hugging him and trying to calm again. She was just a young girl, and she wasn't used to being alone. In fact, she hated it very much. She was still scared of losing her father, and scared of losing her friends. She sniffled, rubbing her eyes with one of the furs. "I'd like to see Uncle Sampson and Aunt Jackie." She agreed softly, trying to think of that instead of where Mani was at the moment.
Habi knew better than to go to the tent where Mani was himself. So he worked out through a bunch of different people how to end up getting together a little pan of hot coals for Mani, some furs, a slice of bread from supper, and his little wooden carved horse. After dusk had fallen, the little bundle of supplies appeared just outside the tent, and no one was the wiser to who had put it there.
Reece looked up to the singing of a small bird, and saw a colourful parakeet peering at him. He recognized it's feathers immediately and looked up as Abby started calling down to him. He grinned, taking a deep bow and swooping off his hat. "She speaks:
O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o'er my head
As is a winged messenger of heaven
Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes
Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him
When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds
And sails upon the bosom of the air." he chuckled, then, glad for once that he actually knew Shakespeare. "Tell me, fine young lady, why do you sit up there on your balcony? Is the view a sight to behold?"
Joyella squealed, tumbling with the pie, but luckily, it landed only semi crushed in the grass as they rolled and she managed to get on top for a moment. "Hah!" She said, bracing her hands on his shoulders. "I got you! And I get all the pie!" She laughed, hoping to come across as evil, but it was a rather sad attempt.
Ella smiled softly, watching as he kissed down her hand and fingers. "And that ring will forever be worth more to me than all the diamonds in the world." She promised, her smiled growing soft and a little shy. "That sounds very promising." She admitted, knowing that she wanted nothing more than to have time off and alone with him. "But what did I do to warrant such a lovely vacation?" she inquired, raising an eyebrow. "This isn't going to be broadcasted or documented or anything, right?" She wanted it to be just them, without the press for once.

Thomas sang softly to her as she rested in the furs he looked back at his Maria and nuzzled her kissing her softly as he he made sure his family was tucked in and comfortable.
Mani was thrilled with the gifts and curled up near the coals feeling warm and comfortable as he held onto his horse closely and dozed off feeling safe and loved and imagining his dad was there keeping watch.
Abby gasped amazed that he was so well versed and smiled down at him "im afraid I am not as well versed as you sir." She wished they could be closer "the garden's look equisite, I wanted to thank you for such a wonderful sentiment and gift...I've never...had anything so nice given to me."
Ren laughed and took a piece smearing it over her face "oh yes? I do believe I have outwitted you princess!" He could easily move under her pressure but enjoyed playing more.
Donavon smiled "it's was our mother's ideas...and no we will be undercover and away from it all...my father did the same for my mother and they agreed that we both have worked hard and deserve a romantic break." He nipped at her lips "I love you...I just want to be married to you..." He ran his fingers through her hair.

As the week wore on, Jen tried to sneak secretive glances at Mani, and smiles whenever no one was looking. But it was hard, for everyone was watching her, knowing she would try to go to him. So she was careful. The boys still taunted her, but they too, were careful about it, and it was only ever a soft word here, and a light shove there. She learned to take it. By the end of the week, she was practically exploding with the need to talk with Mani again, and when the elders announced he was no longer an invisible, Jen ran to him and threw herself at him in a bear hug.
Reece put down his shovel and leaned against the garden wall, looking up at her. She looked so sincere, so truly happy to have gotten his gifts and he smiled, nodding in her direction. "Don't mention it." he insisted. "I figured you might need some cheering up…" he scratched the back of his neck. "And to be honest I was really worried I had fatally wounded you or something by keeping you out working so long." He admitted sheepishly.
Joyella gasped as he smeared warm pie all over her face and she immediately wiped some off and smeared it on him. "Ren Duncan Hartsworth you are in trouble now!" She picked up another piece of pie, and unable to just ruin such a good piece, she took a huge bite. "Mmmm… what lovely pie…" She said, taking another bite. "Too bad I don't plan on sharing it." she grinned wickedly.
Ella let out a soft happy sigh and she nodded, closing her eyes. She didn't want to admit it, but she knew her sickness must just have been stress, for already the nausea and headaches were almost completely gone. It must just have been too much standing up there all pinned up and scrutinized by maids for hours, in a wedding dress. "I want to be yours too, Donavon, and I think a break is well needed. When do we leave?" She asked, pecking him back.

Mani was overwhelmed with joy as his sentence was released he held onto Jenn tightly allowing himself to cry as he squeezed her tightly and held onto her long hair never wanting to let her go "I don't regret it Jenn...I'll always protect you..." He was young but the love he felt he knew that they would be bonded forever. He let her go finally and ran to his dad holding on tightly and burying his face in his chest "papa..."
Thomas wiped away some tears as did a lot of the gypsy clan it was such a beautiful moment and he felt overjoyed that the father and son were reunited and his daughter could see her friend. He kissed Maria's cheek and and nuzzled her "I love you dear one...are you feeling better?" He knew she had been nauseous all week."
Abby shook her head "don't worry, this happens fairly often...I will learn to follow the guidelines set out for me by the doctor...im just so grateful you aren't afraid to assiciate with me...that I didn't scare you away." She reached her hand down now sitting on the stone floor of the balcony to touch his, she just wanted to feel some closeness and not feel like a bird trapped in her cage.
Ren gasped and laughed stealing the bite before it entered her mouth, but by doing so their lips touched and he couldn't control himself as he kissed her softly and cleared his throat "delicious pie...I'd give my compliments to the chef, but well that would lead to us taking the blame for the disappearing pastry." He cleaned her face with his thumb licking off the excess.
Donavon smiled softly "how about this weekend? The press will be too focused on the birth of my distant cousin and we can escape without any notice..." He catessed her cheek glad to see some color back in it "Hows your sister doing? Im sure it's been lonely without Joyella all the time..."

Sam spun her around and kissed her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Why so shy all of a sudden, love? A twisted ankle doesn't make you any less beautiful." He said, and since he was stronger than her, and she was in his arms, she couldn't keep him from leading them back into the change room and locking the door.
She knew he only loved her body, and not her. "Sam, I mean it, I'm not up for this right now." She insisted, trying to stand up for herself even as he started to undo her dress.
He ignored her, kissing her lips and down her neck even as she pushed at him. "Of course you need to rest honey bunch, I promise I'll take care of you." April knew she wasn't getting away from him, and so she closed her eyes and resigned herself, her heart wishing there was something better than this for her. "Be gentle with my ankle please." She whispered.
Jen hugged him tight, unable to stop the tears that suddenly ran from her eyes. The week without him had been agony, and she knew she never wanted to be parted from her friend again. "I missed you so much Mani, I'm so sorry…" she whispered, letting him go so he could go run to his father. She hugged her arms and actually smiled then. She had her friend back.
Habi bent and hugged his boy tight, openly crying as he clutched him close, not wanting to ever let him go again. "My son…" he whispered. Some of the gypsies came to pat them both on the back, or hug one or the other, and they all offered condolences. Mani was clean of any trespassing in their mind, now that he had paid the penalty.
Maria leaned into Thomas, weaker than usual, but mostly just out of relief. "Love you too." She whispered, leaning her head on his shoulder. "I'm getting better… still recovering though." She said softly. She looked as if she had seen a ghost.
Reece found himself nodding, even though he was reluctant to just assume that she was alright. He felt responsible, and was at least glad to know that this wasn't the first time. "Why would I be afraid of associating with such a charming young thing like yourself?" he asked, winking as he climbed up on the bench and reached up to grab her hand, sensing her need for comfort. He wished he could go up there and help her… she looked so alone… but he knew being in a ladies' bedrooms would be enough to get him fired, or worse.
Joyella's eyes widened in indignation when he stole the pie from her, and then suddenly he was kissing her, it was only a brief moment, but it left her flushed and confused. Surely… surely this was not happening? Ren… whom she had rebelled with and against since she was a child, thinking it gross to even contemplate their parent's plans for them? Surely now that fluttering feeling wasn't her changing her mind? "Right…" She said, twirling a strand of her dark hair around her finger. "Wouldn't want to get in trouble." She smiled lightly at him and stood, not sure exactly what she felt in this moment. "Maybe we should head back…" Saying something like that wasn't like the fun loving Joyella at all.
Ella nodded, taking his hand and guiding him to sit by her. "That sounds wonderful." She promised, glad she had something to look forward to now. She propped herself up a little more on the pillows, thinking about her poor sister. "She's lonely." She said honestly. "To think that falling through ice did that much damage…" She shook her head slowly, looking up at him. "But you'd never guess… and I promised my sister I would't tell so you can't breathe a word." She said seriously. "A gardener has taken a fancy to her, and she's quite taken by him as well."

Thomas frowned leading her to the tent and setting her down "what ailes you? My sister in law is a gifted healer and she is coming today...perhaps she could help?" But he knew Maria was as well and that's what was worrying him. "Maria?...love please tell me what's wrong..."
Mani smiled and took Jen's hand leading her to go and play since he missed her so much he pecked her cheek softly "I heard you playing you have become so talented on the lute." He praised happy that she was improving on something he loved. "Im carving you one for your birthday its almost finished!"
Abby squeezed it softly so grateful to be close to him again "tell me more about yourself Reece...you already know far much about me." She felt better his warm rough hand in hers as she ran her thumb over the back of his hand carefully. She didn't know if this was love but it was so nice to feel beautiful and appreciated in a handsome lad's eyes.
Ren was astonished and a little ashamed that he had done such a brash thing and she reacted poorly to it. He got up and helped clean up the mess whistling for the dogs to clean up the pie in the grass. He led her to the door and stepped back "have a good evening your majesty..."
Donavon grinned softly he loved young love and especially something so forbidden "young Reece is the only one I can think of that would be close to her age, he's a good boy and an artist when it comes to the flower beds." He praised and gkanced out the window "we have our own Romeo and Juliet scene outside our window."

Maria didn't have the strength to resist, and she followed him to the tent and sat in the furs. "I… I was showing symptoms of… of poisoning for a while." She said softly, laying back and closing her eyes. "Like I said, I'm recovering now, my body is just weak. What worries me, is why the food was poisoned. The berries I ate are harmless most of the time, unless left out too long. My people is skilled at cooking, and wouldn't have made a mistake like that unless it was on purpose… and what is worse… Thomas, is that they were meant for you."
Jen blushed brightly, happy that he noticed her progressing, as she had been working hard on practicing, hoping to show him how much she had learned once his sentence was lifted again. "Thank you… I wouldn't have been able to learn if you hadn't taught me…" she said, smiling at him. Then her eyes grew wide in wonder. "My very own?" she gasped, shocked at his kindness. "Mani, you didn't have to do that much work for me!" She hugged him, clearly thrilled.
Reece chuckled, sitting on the ledge below the balcony and leaning against the wall so he could still hold her hand, but wasn't standing awkwardly anymore. "I like sunsets. And misty mornings. I'd read and paint more often, if I had the time… and apparently I'm good with horses. My father fought and died in the French war, the same one your parents were in, I believe." He said, pretty much telling her all about himself. "My mother lives at our cottage with me, on property, and we have one scrawny black cat named buttercup. Don't ask me where the name came from. My older sister is married to a doctor in town, and I've lived in England my whole life." he liked the feel of her thumb on his hand, and he liked how close he felt to her right then, even though they were separated by stone. "Now tell me about yourself, princess."
Joyella was glad when Ren helped cleanup, and was smart enough to get the dogs to cover up the rest of the remains. She knew if he kissed her again, she would kiss him right back, and that thought scared her a bit, because she wasn't sure how she felt towards him exactly. She wanted time to think. So when they walked up to the palace again, she thought he understood that she just wanted some space, and nothing else personal. Well… until he called her 'your majesty'. Never in the history of all Ren's nicknames had that one ever come up, and it stung her quite a bit. Why was he so cold to her all of a sudden? Had she done something wrong? Was he angry for some reason? The hurt was clear on her face for a moment, and then she stood straighter, remembering her upbringing, all the training to be strong. "Goodday, prince." She said, shutting the door. The thud it made sounded so hollow that she almost started crying then and there. Joyella was sensitive on the inside, after all.
Ella smiled, happy to hear about the boy that her sister had fallen for. "Artistic, hm?" She said, wondering if she approved of him. Sliding out of bed, she went to the window to see her sister on her balcony, and conversing with a boy who had a weathered sort of charm, and was sitting below her, holding her hand. He seemed nice enough, after close scrutiny. "I suppose I approve." she finally stated, a smile lighting on her features. She was happy for her sister, truly.

Thomas was angry that something meant for him affected her. He closed his eyes pressing his lips to her forehead "they'll never accept us Maria...I don't want you hurt or persecuted because you are with me...I'll go with Sampson on the ship...and come back in a few months by that time the angst should decrease..." He was completely serious he refused to be the reason his girls were taunted and tortured.
Mani smiled "you can't see it yet but I know you are going to like it! This way we can play together!" He said excited and skipped stones "are those boys still being cruel to you? Or did they learn their lesson?"
Abby smiled softly loving everything he said about himself "I'll sneak you books from the library and we can read together just like this!" She fought about what to say "im not a princess, just a duchess...I love animals especially my parakeet Pierto..." She watched the bird happily chirp as he heard his name "I love to read as well and be outside...I love the book the secret garden and wish I could have a place like that...it made the invalid boy well and strong..I love music and my family...my best friend Joyella and the puppies...I love rainy days and sunshine but not too hot...I used to love the snow but since my accident I can't be out in it."
Ren sighed miserably and left not knowing how such a wonderful afternoon could be ruined. He picked a red rose and left it for the maid to give to her. He always said she was his little Rose bud prickly at first but enchanting once you get to know her. Why on earth did he kiss her?! It was obvious she was highly unconfortable by that...he was such a fool.
Donavon chuckled "it's very sweet...I mean you have to admit it. Look at them hold hands and converse...she looks healthier and happier then I've seen in a long time."
