McKensie and Lara III

Sampson nodded, but it sounded as if something was wrong. "Yes, he'll get to meet our girls." he agreed, happy about that at least. Then he grinned, clapping his shoulder. "Almost there." he agreed, looking towards the island. "Tomorrow morning, I think I will be well enough to go ashore. That gives the crew a good nights rest to face whatever we find there."
Iliana smiled as their little friend came out to join them, and she laughed as she chased Sable around the garden. Scooping the girl and the pup up into her arms, she sat down on the stone bench their, and took out their book, starting to read.
Maxwell was worried for her, being all alone in that house, and his worry showed in his eyes. But he nodded slowly, trusting her. "Alright…" He kissed her gently, stepping back. "Please be careful." he whispered, really not liking that she was leaving.

Thomas grinned and clapped his brother on the other shoulder "imagine it Sam...everything that we've heard since we were lads...we'll see it and let the world see it..."
Eliza lay on her chest and looked at the pictures holding onto Savle and smiling up at Illiana who she considered her mom. She felt safe and loved and when she had nightmares she could crawl into bed with them and feel better.
Lacey nodded and gave a small smile "I will be...you be good ok?" She whispered and kissed him deeply before letting him go and getting packed. When night came though she stole some of Max's clothes that he wore before they met and chopped off her golden hair and buried it in the backyard and headed to the train system officially Maxwell Wendell.

Sampson shook his head, incredulous. "I feel like my whole life has been leading up to this…" he looked over at his brother. "What if it isn't everything we dreamed it'd be?"
Iliana enjoyed reading, it was one thing she could still do well at, and Eliza always seemed enthralled by the books. When she finished, she gently ran her hands through the girl's wispy hair. "Did you like the story?"
Maxwell nodded, an ache forming in his chest. He knew something was wrong, but he didn't say it. He trusted her. So he just nodded and let her go, feeling the distance between them before she even left. When he woke to finder gone in the morning, the ache just worsened. She hadn't said goodbye.

Thomas sighed "I worry about the same thing Sam...but I feel that even if it isn't we made it and dad and grandfather can't claim that. We can...us as brothers and perhaps we may move away from each other but we'll still have this."
Eliza smiled and nodded "I liked the princess...and her animal friends." She said softly and coughed feeling weak and holding onto Illiana while she coughed painfully. She had TB and she could live with it but it still was hard and she couldn't do much.
There was a note with the letter that she had his from him on the bathroom sink explaining what she did and apologizing for lying but she couldn't let him go and get killed.
Lacey sat by another man and tried to think about what she'd say and how to change her voice to keep up the act. "Morning." Was that good? Not too friendly?

Sampson nodded, lightened by what he said. "You really give good pep talks." he said, grinning at him. "And I am glad, whatever happens, that we managed to work together all these years."
Iliana nodded, rubbing her arms gently as she tried to help her through the coughing. "I like her too… she had a garden, just like we're in right now. You're a princess, you know that?" She said, smiling gently.
Maxwell sighed softly, giving up looking out the window for her, and he went back into the room to get changed. He spotted the letter, and frowned in concern. Picking it up, it only took minutes to read it. And once he had, he let out a string of curses, slamming it down on the sink.
Jack looked up when a strange looking boy spoke to him. He wasn't usually friendly, but the boy looked so hopeful that he couldn't help but smile in return. "Morning." he replied. "Nice day out."

Thomas nodded and smiled "I think our ladies are talking I should be exceptionally worried...and you as well. The two of them could cause some trouble."
Eliza was coughing so hard she was gasping for breath when she got that back she shook her head "princess's are wanted and have parents who love them...they aren't sick..."
Lacey nodded "it is, where are you from?" She asked testing out her voice and finding it sounded male, a young make but most of these boys were. She knew Maxwell had found the letter by now and winced thinking about his reaction.

Sampson chuckled, shaking his head slowly. "Let it not be said that Sada is anything but a little tiger." He chuckled. "Well, it looks like you've got your hands full. Go on then." he pushed Thomas forwards and turned to go check on Jacqueline.
Iliana bit her lip, hating to see the small girl so sad. "You are a damsel in distress, and they are always saved by knights in shining armour," she whispered, hugging her close. "And you have many people here who love you." She kissed her hair.
Jack smiled a little more confidently then and nodded. "I'm from Ireland, and you?" He asked, happy to get to know someone, even if he might not know anyone for long.
Maxwell paced the bathroom, swearing enough to scare away the maids before he just sank onto the bed in defeat, his head in his hands. He knew he couldn't fetch Lacey back until after the war, for she would be shot if she was found to be a girl.

Jackie smiled as he came into the room "don't come on here love it reeks of stomach contents...and I may purge again..." She moaned and vomited again "how are you feeling?..." She whispered pushing his hair back with her clean hand.
Marcoyx watched her and knew he wanted to talk to her about Eliza...maybe that night who knows...she was always there with Illiana being held and read to...like their child.
Eliza looked up at her with big blue eyes "do you and him love me?"
Lacey smiled "always wanted to travel there..." She said honestly "I lived close to London, more in the country...own a major up there...leaving behind a family...what about you?"

Sampson frowned, not liking to see her so sick like this. He came to sit beside her on the cot, and gently ran his fingers through her hair, "I'm feeling better. I'm getting faster and faster at doing things again." he said honestly, looking down at his hands. "Are you doing alright? Are you sick?"
Iliana smiled down at the small girl. How could anyone say no to that? "Of course we love you." She promised, tucking her small body against her. She meant it too. The poor girl was so sweet and all alone.
Jack smiled lightly, thinking about his home country. "Prettiest rolling hills you'll ever see. Good food and good friends too." He agreed. Then he smiled softly. "London seemed like a nice place last time I visited." he offered, happy to know where this boy was from. "I don't have much family, not anymore. Ma and Pa both died to the fever, and my youngest brother's still in Ireland, doing his schooling."

Jackie sighed "I don't feel sick...I feel hungry and a little cold...but not sick...Sampson I need you to get the ship doctor...please and I don't want you to panic until we have facts..."
Eliza held her close "what about when you go home?...your getting better and I'm not...I don't want to be left alone..." She said softly and Marcoux knew they'd have to talk about this.
Lacey nodded and showed him a picture of Eloise, just Eloise thankfully "this is my girl...she's perfect isn't she? My wife is home with her...didn't want me to leave."

Sampson frowned a little. Hungry but not sick? He tucked the blanket around her tighter, to help keep her warm. "I'll go fetch the doctor." he promised, wondering why she thought he would panic. "I'll be right back." he said, going to get the doctor and bring him back to her.
Iliana bit her lip, wondering about that too. But she couldn't give any answers to her, when she didn't have any to give. "We won't ever stop loving you. No matter what." She promised, running her fingers through her hair.
Jack smiled brightly, not having to fake the adoration he felt when he saw the image. "What a sweet little bitty!" he said, smiling genuinely. "I suppose it would be hard to leave a family. At least it isn't for too long. They said the war won't last, you know. Not supposed to last long at all."

Jackie sighed and sat up when the doctor came in, she wondered how Sampson would feel if she verified her fears with words. She let the doctor take her temperature and pulse "I suppose I need to undress?"
A nurse came out to get Eliza for her treatment and had them wait since they coukdnt be in the room with her. Marcoux took her hand "love...I must voice my needs or I'll never forgive myself...I need us to be Eliza's true parents...to care for her and love her at home. She'll get better once she leaves this awful place."
Lacey sighed "you never know honestly...im good friends with the Royal family and he fears that Germany will strike hard..." She was glad she remembered listening to Maxwell and James speak while she sat with Lydia.

The doctor nodded, smiling gently at her. "Yes, you'll need to undress."
Sampson sat next to her, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand. He was worried about her, and wasn't sure what to think. Why did she need to undress?
Iliana turned to look at Marcoux, wondering what he had to talk to her about. When he spoke, she paused, thinking about that. Adopting Eliza? She liked that idea, as she knew she loved the little girl. "how do we gain custody of her?" She asked softly. "Would she even want that?"
Jack swallowed, not liking that news. "Oh, that is too bad. Hopefully the world is prepared for the attack." He said softly. "I despise war."

Jackie pulled off her trousers and sighed just focusing on Sampson stroking his rough stubble and down his chin "I love you..."
Marcoux sighed "I'd assume so, the questions about parents and love makes me think she wants parents she wants us...I'll talk to the head doctor and a lawyer...we will find a way..."
Lacey nodded and sighed "yeah...where do you think they are taking us?"

Sampson smiled softly, watching the doctor warily, and then keeping his gaze on his love. "And I love you." He whispered. "Are you doing alright?" He asked, as the doctor examined her.
Iliana nodded in agreement. "Alright. Alright. I have no idea how to deal with lawyers or any of that. I grew up as a maid, but you can talk to someone, right? We can find a way? I do think I love her." She said honestly.
Jack, looked out the window of the train and shrugged. "Last I heard we were going to a post in Italy. But I don't know for sure." He said honestly.

Jackie sighed "I feel like he's digging for gold down there but I'm ok..." She promised and sighed sitting up when she was allowed wondering what the verdict was.
Marcoyx nodded and slowly stood going to the head doctors office "I want to officially take Eliza Jane into my custody, she is an orphan and I would like to adopt her."
Lacey sighed and nodded "this is not what I had in mind when I wanted to travel the world...what about you? Any special ladies waitibg for you at home?"

Sampson smiled softly, shaking his head. "Well that's an interesting analogy."
The doctor looked up, putting his tools away again. "You might be pregnant, lass. All the signs are there."
Sampson's eyes widened and he stared at the doctor. He swayed once, and the emotions overwhelmed his shell shocked mind. And then his eyes rolled back and he collapsed to the floor.
The doctor looked up, as that nice man entered the office. "You want to give Eliza a home?" He pulled out the papers. "God bless you for finally loving that little girl." He pushed the papers towards him.
Jack nodded in agreement. "I can relate to that much." he said, his smile soft. "And nope… no ladies as of yet. I was a hard working man, and didn't have time for girls… something I suppose I'll regret when I lie dying out there."

Jackie screamed and scrambled down to him lightly slapping his face "Sampson?! Sam wake up!" She looked at the doctor worriedlt she was naked and he still wouldn't wake up...
Marcoux smiled and took them signing them off and nodded "yeah, how should I tell her?...she's still in treatment.." He was so excited the perfect angel that stole both of their hearts was going to be their daughter.
Lacey frowned "I make a vow with you that I won't let you die Jack." She said seriously knowing that she had to come back home to Max...if he forgave her by then...

Sampson lay unconscious on the floor, breathing erratically.
The doctor frowned, and kneeled by him, listening to his heart, and then looking under his eyelids at his eyes. "Seems the lightning may have done more damage than we suspected. The shock triggered too many synapses in his brain and it collapsed. When he wakes, don't let him go to sleep immediately again. He's going to need to be watched for the next twenty four hours, to know the extent of the damage."
Jack smiled lightly then, patting his new friend's shoulders. "That means a lot, mate, I promise the same for you. We'll get back, you'll see." And just like that, the two mates were wished into a war torn country, as in the next week, like expected, Germany waged war against the world.

Jackie swallowed and nodded getting dressed and having the doctor help him to the bed since her wrist was still broken and well she was carrying a littke stow away now. She caressed his hair and lay on his chest "I need you to be ok...because I cant do this without you..."
Marcoux went back to Illiana handing her the forms "congrats your a mommy...Eliza is sleeping but we can tell her when she wakes up...she's coming home with us."
Lacey was sitting on the bunk her hands shaking as she wrote to Maxwell "I miss you, I'm sorry I lied but I had to...I coukdnt let you go...im ok, they keep me out of battle mostly made some friends...learned to shower secretly and...well know far too many rude jokes that you would love...point is I love you...and I miss your voice..." She sent it off and sighed pulling her helmet over her head so she could cry without judgement.

Sampson stayed unconscious for a half hour, and then he groaned softly and shifted, his eyes peeling open. He was immediately hit by a wave of nausea and exhaustion and he moaned, closing his eyes again. Sleep… he wanted sleep so badly.
Iliana stared at the forms and then gasped, thrilled. "Oh! We have a daughter!" She hugged Marcoux, kissing him. "We can bring her home and she can meet the foxes." She smiled brightly.
Maxwell got the letter, and his jaw clenched as he read it. He loved his girl, he would always love her, but he was beyond mad. She had insulted him by leaving, and on top of that, she had lied to him. Tearing up her letter he let the pieces drift into the trash. It was only after an hour of cooling down that he finally decided to write back. He wrote to keep her from being lonely, as he still cared for her. But none of the note had any feeling in it.
'I'm glad that you're safe, and your identity is still secret. I'm glad to hear you're being smart about it.
I love you too,
Maxwell'

Marcoux nodded and kissed her again "of course...I already had the maids set up a bedroom a playroom and clothes and dolls..." He listed off, his face split into a giant grin "I can't believe it!"
Lacey got the letter and it killed her, she traced each ink stroke and swallowed back the tears. The love was gone...he was too angry at her to feel anything else...she tucked in away in her boot heading out to the battle field again, the sound was deafening and she was trying to help woman and children get to the train stations quickly when an air attack hit and down she went unconscious her innards slowly seeping out she was in trouble.

Iliana, looped her arm through his, imagining what that would look like. "She'll love all that. I can't wait to tell her." She said, smiling up at him. "We're parents, Marcoux, of a human child, we're legal parents!"
Jack was in her regiment, as he always was. When the explosion went off, he was knocked back, and as he staggered to his feet, he saw Lacey. Scooping her up into his arms, he carried her to the war hospital just as fast as he could so she could get care from the nurses there. Maxwell was sent a note to say that he could pick her up. Of course, they thought it was a woman that would be picking Lacey up.

Marcoux chuckled and nodded hugging her tightly "we are...I wish I could tell Maxwell and Lacey but...he won't allow visitors and she well...hopefully is alive."
The doctor found out quickly that she was not male and didn't know what to do, he went out to Jack "who did you call...a male or female?" He could reveal her gender she'd be in huge trouble and he didn't know what to do.

Iliana frowned softly. "I do hope she's alright." She whispered. "Is the war ever going to end? It feels like it's lasted years already." She held his hand. "Is Maxwell alright?"
Jack frowned at the doctor's question. "I sent it to the address that he had provided." he said, meaning Lacey. "It was to his wife."
Maxwell stormed into the hospital just then, his eyes still hard and cold, but there was worry there, flickering in the background. "Where is he?" He demanded, glaring at the doctor and everyone who got close. "The soldier? I was called in. I'm his brother." He lied, protecting her identity. "I've come to take him home."

Marcoux sighed shaking his head "he's turned into a cold heartless man...I can't get anything out of him...Eloise lives with her parents now because he doesn't want her."
The doctor nodded and brought him into the room, he closed the door "she's in bad condition...I honestly don't know if she'll survive if she leaves...you need to get her transported to a hospital quickly..."

Iliana bit her lip, hating to hear of her friends suffering so severely. "Oh… how awful. It must have really struck a nerve for her to leave if he is that bad now…" She shook her head. "I do hope she comes back soon."
Maxwell surveyed Lacey, and the damage, and he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. "Alright. We'll board the next ambulance to the hospital." He said simply. He tucked the blanket in around his wife and then just waited in silence until the ambulance arrived. He stayed with her in the trip to the hospital, and then just waited in the waiting area while Lacey was taken into surgery. Throughout all of it, he stayed quiet.

Marcoux dighed and nodded, he smiled as he saw the little girl wake up. He nudged Illiana into the room and Eliza looked up and smiled "hi Illi...I was brave this time like you said..."
The doctor came out hours later and gave a smile "she's been asking for you...she's still pretty groggy but you were the first thing she wanted..."

Iliana walked over to Elize and scooped her up into her arms, smiling brightly. "I'm so proud!" She said, high giving her. Then she knelt and looked at her seriously. "Eliza, what would you think if I was your mother?"
Maxwell nodded, getting up immediately. He walked towards the room and then looked back at the doctor. "Thank you." he said simply, and walked into the room. He wouldn't deny Lacey company, just like he hadn't denied her a letter. So he went in and sat by her bed.

Eliza started to cry and hugged her tightly "I don't want you to go though...I want you to stay..." She thought being a mother meant that she'd leave her and it broke her little 5 year old heart.
Lavey slowly started to wake up wincing in the pain she was feeling "gotta get them to safety...Jack..." She moaned thinking she was still at the train station with him.

Iliana wrapped her up in her arms. "I'm staying for a very long time, I promise." She vowed. "You're coming home with Marcoux and I. We're going to take care of your and be your new parents." she kissed her hair.
Maxwell was worried for his love, as he always worried for her. But the cold look had not left his eyes. He was a hurt and angry man. He shook his head slowly. "You're in the hospital, Lacey." he said softly. "You were hit."

Eliza hugged her tightly "I love you mommy..." She whislered feeling overjoyed that she was going to a home and with new parents and Sable "when can we leave?"
Lacey blinked away the pain and saw her love, her face brightened until she saw the cold harsh look in his eyes and her heart shattered realizing his latter really didn't have love "oh...is my troop ok?"

Iliana beamed, hugging her little girl close, so thrilled. "We can leave as soon as the doctors give us leave." She promised softly. "I love you too baby girl."
Maxwell watched her, making sure she wasn't in pain, and that she was doing alright. "Yes, they're all ok. Your new friend said to tell you farewell. I think he left you a note." he said simply. He didn't want to even discuss the topic of her leaving yet, not while the emotions were roiling in him.

Eliza dmiled kissing her cheek "and Sable? He's coming too right?"
Marcoux chuckled and nodded hugging both of his girls "we all go home and you can play and go to school...be a nornal littke girl."
Lavey nodded and sighed watching him closely "Max...you still love me right?..you've changed and it scares me..." She admitted quietly "I didn't mean to hurt you...I was making sure this didn't happen to you..."

Iliana nodded in agreement. "Of course! He's our family dog!" She said, petting his scruffy ears. "We'll be a family. We are a family, and you are a princess."
Maxwell looked over at her, meeting her gaze. "Of course I love you. I will always love you, no matter what you do." A muscle in his jaw clenched. "But that doesn't mean I'm happy with what you did." He added a little softer. "You insult me, and run me ragged worrying about you, risking your health. What would have happened if you died? That would have been worse pain than anything. You would have killed me yourself by dying." He didn't realize his voice had raised until he finished talking and he sighed, dropping his head in his hands. "You killed me already, Lacey. Don't you understand that?"

Eliza giggled and hugged Sable and held onto Illiana's leg giggling "your the queen then mommy and daddy's the king!" She was so excited that she didn't even cough she was getting enough oxygen from laughing and smiling.
Lacey ducked her head in shame as she started to cry and turned away from him "your letter killed me...and the letters from our friends...my husband is gone. I felt like you hated me, i didn't mean to insult you...I just..." She sighed the pain almost unbearable "where's the letter?"

Iliana laughed and scooped her up, spinning her around. "Yes. And we'll all live happily ever after." She set her down. "But for now, we all need some rest." She said seriously.
Maxwell looked down, and then pulled out the letter, handing it to her quietly. It was from Jack, and said that he knew and would keep her secret safe. He wished her all the best, and said that he was heading home with a medal thanks to her.

Marcoux nodded picking up Eliza and smiled going to their bedroom and tucking them all into the large bed and snuggling in "Mmm this is nicd, my family..."
Lavey froened missing Jack, she didn't know what was going to happen with her and Maxwell. He didn't seem like he even wanted to be with her anymore "what do you want to do Max?...can you even live with me anymore?"

Iliana followed Marcoux back to their room, where she climbed into bed with him, and now a little girl tucked between them. Pecking his lips, she nodded. "Family…" She repeated. "And we all get to go home tomorrow… right?"
Maxwell looked up, stunned at her comment. Every bit of his expression screamed pain. "Why would you think that?" He asked softly, wondering if she wanted to split from him, if she had left to the war for that very reason. He was cracking inside. "Do you love Jack?"

Marcoux nodded and smiled "the house is ready and we just need to pack and go to the town car. I can't wait...it's time to leave, you are strong mentally and physically again..."
Lacey looked at him shocked and shook her head "Of course not...he's a friend that I care about...I don't know... but...I love you, I just know I can't handle our marriage if it'll be like this from now on...you broke me with that letter...I felt worthless that you didn't care whether I came back or not..."

Iliana nodded in agreement. They could just pack up and leave to home soon. She tucked herself up against him. "I'm only strong again thanks to you." She said softly. "I could never have gotten this far without you."
Maxwell grit his teeth, looking away. "I broke you with a letter? How do you think I feel then? What were you thinking leaving to the war? Did you honestly think you would be more capable in battle than me? Am I that feeble in your eyes? I felt worthless, because I felt you thought I was worthless. I was angry because you left! Every second I was wishing you were back again."

Marcoux shook his head "You had to do the work yourself..." he whispered as to not disturb his little daughter. His cheeks flushed with pride even thinking about how wonderful this little girl was and how she had taken his heart and hugged it softly never letting go. "We're parents..." he whispered amazed still not understanding the magnitude of this.
Lacey felt her chest ache from the pull of the stitches as she sat up and whimpered from the sharp burning pain. "Your letter was the most cruel thing you could have sent me...I expected anger, sadness...worry, love...you know what I read? Indifference, stoic anger that is more hurtful then you yelling at me! I was scared to lose you! I was scared to be Lydia and Illiana waiting for their men helplessly I wanted to be the one that took charge for once, little Lacey not a spoilt rich blonde wisp that cant do anything...I never saw you as feeble, I never even thought that you weren't capable...I wanted to prove that I was...and you know what I did, because if I was old Lacey with that letter I would have thrown myself on a mine...but i didn't I kept going and doing what's right..."

Iliana nodded, liking to think of herself as strong and capable like her friends. But in reality, she knew she was just a maid at heart, a maid that had broken at the thought of not being wanted. She wasn't as strong as she wished she was. "Yes, we're parents." She whispered, glad for the change in topic. "And to be good parents, we need to head to bed early, and get up early for the trip home. Goodnight, big man. Get some rest." She smiled, running a hand over his cheek before just resting beside him and letting her eyes close.
Maxwell immediately pushing Lacey back down onto the hospital bed again. She had stitches in her stomach, after all, and shouldn't be moving around. "Lie still, you're hurt." he said softly, just listening to her rant. "It was a letter, Lacey, you couldn't have judged my emotions correctly. I was fuming mad. Would you rather I had started cursing at you? That 'indifference' you read was me trying to stay courteous when I felt like spewing all hell on the world." He ground out. "You aren't spoilt, though you are rich. You're a strong woman, and I have no doubt you can take on a few men with guns and survive in the trenches. You don't have to prove that to me!" He raked a hand through his hair, exasperated, and just plain old exhausted. The wear was showing in how thin he was. Surviving off alcohol wasn't exactly healthy. "I married a strong woman. Not some insecure girl that ran towards trouble just to prove her strength." He looked over at her tiredly. "You could have talked to me about it, and if it really meant that much to you, I would have been sad, but I would have let you go, because I love you. But you left without asking me, you left without confiding in me. And I took that to mean that you don't trust me."

Lacey swallowed looking at him and not feeling the joy, not feeling the love. This was a joyous occasion to be reunited and neither of them had embraced or even smiled "You grew up Pan..." is all she said, she didn't need to say anymore she knew that the love was gone...and it was her fault, she didn't know why she left but she knew that any answer she'd give he wouldn't like...there was no connection there was no hope and playing on the beach. Just two scared people too untrusting to even trust themselves anymore.

That single comment stung more than anything Maxwell had ever been through in his entire life, and he visibly flinched. He had told her he was hurting, he had hinted that he wanted to make it better, that he had missed her and was only hurt because she didn't trust him. And here she was just pushing him away. Suddenly Maxwell had to rethink this whole conversation and wonder where he went wrong. Did Lacey really want to end their marriage after all? The thought sickened him to the point that he knew he couldn't stay by her a second longer or he'd break down. He stood and moved to the door, only looking back from the frame. "And you lost your wings." he whispered, leaving the room and shutting the door after him.

Thomas went about making sure his men understood the importance of following the stones exactly, one wrong step and they´d have to kill immediately or be killed...He motioned the crew onwards being the first to step on the slick marble stones and braced himself for anything to happen but nothing did, he let out a breath and ventured forward.
Lacey felt the tears stream down her face silently and then she shook with sobs wishing she could understand where it all had gone wrong...it wasn´t the war that was just the last straw that broke them...Maybe it was having Eloise? She didn´t know nor did she care at this point her heart was too broken to repair she replied to Jack. Letting him know how proud she was of him and thanking him for saving her life she paused and then wrote what was in her heart, I feel confused...I should be ecstatic to be with Maxwell again but it isn´t working and I don´t think we are going to last...I feel connected to you which feels wrong but I need to know if you feel the same or am I so lonely I´d come up with anything to ease the patheticness...always yours Lacey¨

Sampson watched in nervous anticipation as Thomas slid onto the first stone. He sucked in a breath, watching the sand in nervous anticipation, and then breathed out a sigh of relief. He waited until Thomas was onto the next stone, before he moved forwards and edged himself onto the first stone. Again, there was a moment of hesitation, before he let himself breathe again and step onto the next stone. Soon all of the men were walking carefully across stones.
Maxwell sat down heavily in the bathroom and held his head in his hands, his shoulders shaking as he sobbed silently. He loved Lacey, he loved her, and had worn away worrying about her. He was beyond frustrated at her leaving, and yet she acted so surprised, as if she had done nothing wrong. She acted like he was the one who had lost love. He knew that was false, as it was aching in him, throbbing and wounded at her rejection. Maybe she had run to the war because she didn't love him anymore. He couldn't figure out any other reason for it.
Jack got her letter and frowned in concern. Something must have gone wrong. He wrote back immediately. 'Dear Lacey, it is still so strange to call you by that name. I am sorry that your reunion with your husband did not go better. I had grown very fond of you during the war, but if you are inquiring whether I see you as a love interest or not, I'm going to have to politely decline. Seeing that I am not homosexual, I never saw you in that manner, and still view you only as one of my close friends. Has something gone wrong with your husband? I'm always here to talk to,
Jack.'

Lacey received the letter and thankfully her heart didn't sink, it didn't want Jack it wanted Maxwell. She had to fix this and fast before they lose each other for good. She groaned and quickly stood balancing shakily as she slowly walked to the door and clenched onto the doorknob before losing strength and falling she cried out and knocked on the door "Max...Pan, please I need you...I need you to come out so we can talk...I love you so much...please..."

Maxwell's head jerked up as something thudded against the door. He brushed away his tears, staring as a voice floated through. Immediately panic clenched at his gut. Lacey had been walking!? She had stitches! She shouldn't be moving at all! He jumped up and opened the door, bending to gently scoop her up into his arms. He had tears in his eyes again as he heard what she said and he kissed her gently as he carried her bak down the hall and called a nurse on the way, laying her back in her bed. "I love you, baby. I always have, and I always will, never doubt that." he whispered, tucking her into the hospital bed as the doctors came.
Thomas sighed "missed us I suppose, I'm going to introduce him to Sad'a and you can introduce Jackie...I don't know I was shocked by his letter especially since we are so close...so close to our goal Sam."
Marcoux smiled and kissed her cheek and held her hand, he saw a little girl that was left here by the parents not wanting to deal with a sick girl chase Sable her name was Eliza Jane and she always played with the dog and sat with Illiana to be read fo.
