When I went to the bookstore of the Wolfsonian-FLU museum, I found a bookshelf of volumes that at one time or another had been banned books. Why do you think Independent People was one of those books, keeping company with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and others?

It's likely because Halldor Laxness was believed to be a Communist sympathizer. During the Red Scare in the 1950s, books written by authors suspected of having Communist leanings were often banned or taken out of print.
