Eepa *mm loving bookworm* (eepa) | 8 comments I was adding some new books to my shelves couple of days ago and found out that there is a separate series page for the Finnish translation of The Wheel of Time. But the series page is mess of books with 4 different languages.

I checked most of the books and many have up to 5 series names attached to them. I switched the Finnish series name (Ajan pyörä) to be the first series in the Finnish editions but that changed the series name in all the books as they are combined and did nothing for the series page.

I also tried to select the Finnish editions into the book listing in the series page but was unable to add the missing Finnish translations. The search engine wouldn't give them to me even when I used the exact Finnish name. It would instead give one of the other translations of the same book.

Is there are way to make the Finnish translations to show in the Finnish series page?

As it is, it's pretty useless.

Short answer: no.

All editions that have the same content should be combined. When translated, there are countries/languages where a book is frequently publised in two parts.
According to the original series page https://www.goodreads.com/series/41526 there are four other numberings for this series.
A series is valid for every edition of the book, even though the title of series might be in another language. Series shows on all editions that are combined.
The edition showing on the series page, is the most popular edition (shelved by most users).
Usually there is just one series, for all languages. Only when the numbering/order is different, a extra series can be created.

Only when the Finnish translations are unique (for example when all books are published in three parts in Finnish, where other languages have one or two parts) the series page would show the Finnish editions. However, when there is another language that translates in three parts, these should be combined with the Finnish editions. Depending on how many users shelf an edition, the edition might not all be in the same language.

The best way to find the Finnish editions, is go to the Finnish series page. Clicking on "35 editions" for book 1 brings you to the all editions page of that book. You can sort on title.
When you click "expand details" you can search (ctr-f) for Finnish.

(linking to one of the books / series is always a good idea when you have a question).

ila | 12 comments Partially OT, I really think that a "choose language" filter would be very useful to search the specific edition one's looking for... the title filter is not always the best choice since it can depend on the accuracy of the recording and the number of editions for the most popular books.

I agree. That has been requested before in the Feedback Group.
