Books I Quit Reading in 2015
Jm Rollins Jm Jun 07, 2015 03:44PM
In the past I struggled to finish every book I started reading, and feeling guilty if I never quite got back around to finishing up those books. This year, I have decided that there is nothing to feel guilty about in not finishing a book. In fact, it is probably better in the long run if I do not finish books that I don’t like. I can avoid the weeks of listlessness that come from trudging through a literary desert. No longer will I have the apprehension that I might not like the next book I pick up either, and so just avoid reading all together.

This year, I have stopped reading (so far, and this does not include samples on my Kindle):
• Black by Christopher Whitcomb
• Five Star Billionaire by Tash Aw
• (R)evolution (Phoenix Horizon Book One) by P J Manney
• The Settlers (Book One of the Movement Trilogy) by Jason Gurley
• The Colony by John Davis
• The Second Oldest Profession by D.W. Ulsterman
• One Click: Jeff Bezos And the Rise of Amazon by Richard L Brandt

What books have you stopped reading (whatever the reason)? I do not think that it is fair to rate a book without having finished it. Do you? Do you think Goodreads should add in an “I did not finish this book” option to the ratings system?

If you read far enough into a book to rate it, then you can rate it. How far is up to you. I give it a third of the way in. (It's my arbitrary rating system.) If I dump the book less than that I won't rate it, but I still might review what I'd read so far.

I mark my unfinished books by calling them books I didn't finish. Pretty straightforward.

Life is too short to finish a book that just isn't doing it for you.

I read this book to the end and wish I hadn't. My goal going forward is to finish fewer terrible books!

The books you don't want to finish are usually great for reviewing. The books I usually give up on are fantasy based. Most recently The Goblin Emperor and I knew almost immediately that I was not going to like it. I don't even think I read 50 pages.
(R)evolution was just good enough that I thought it was going to get better for long enough that I thought that I might as well finish it. It did not get better, it got worse.
