Wow…this is only the third time I haven't found anything in there. One P seems appropriate, though I suppose you just need to go with what an editor tells you regarding the spelling.

Just checked a dictionary. It's traditionally two Ps, but I still think it should be determined by the editor.

so according to the website sev found, it looks like it's just one of them is the italian spelling (two p's)and the other is the latin spelling (one p).
