The book is by member Sharman Apt Russell and was on The Guardians list of top Nature books in 2014.

Sharman Russell (sharmanaptrussell) | 14 comments Hi,Kristoffer, I have been teaching in Los Angeles and away from Goodreads. How fun to see the book here! I'm happy to answer any questions or talk about citizen science. While in L.A., I've been taking photos of reptiles and amphibians for the Reptiles and Amphibians of Southern California project and visited the organizer Greg Pauly at the natural history museum. The key here is that so much of LA is privately owned. So to get the data (what still exists in LA, native and non-native species), you have to get into people's backyards--or rather, get them to go into their backyards. While on my runs in the area of Culver City, I did "capture" a big turtle outside the Ballona wetlands, a Southern alligator lizard, a Western side-blotched lizard, and many, many other fence lizards that were too quick for my camera...
