Matthew Mousseau | 399 comments I'm reading a book that doesn't appear in the goodreads database. The cover and information are available on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Jean-Sans-Terre...

Hardcover: 190 pages
Publisher: Thomas Yoseloff; 1st edition (1958)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1111895015
ISBN-13: 978-1111895013
ASIN: B0007EAH20

lethe | 16368 comments Shouldn't it be left without an ISBN? It's clearly a pre-ISBN edition, and it doesn't link to the page on Amazon. Neither ISBN is in Worldcat.

Abcdarian | 26579 comments If that's pre-ISBN, feel free to remove. The Amazon link in message 1 works, for whatever reason, and the ASIN, which I know is not to be added.

lethe | 16368 comments Thanks, have removed it. I wonder where Amazon gets those ISBNs/ASINs from.

Abcdarian | 26579 comments I don't know but it makes life complicated. :-)

[I]t is possible for a pre-ISBN book to become associated with an ISBN due to an ISBN being added when/if another printing of the edition occurred after the initiation of ISBNs.

Abcdarian | 26579 comments So if it's associated with the ISBN, do we use it or not?

message 9: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16368 comments The ISBN is not found on Worldcat. I didn't see later printings with an ISBN. I think Amazon assigns these like they assign ASINs to print editions.

They do not.

It's pretty hard to prove that there was not another printing in 1967 (or thereabouts). Proving a negative is often difficult.

However, in this case the ISBN appears to have definitely been used by another book, so probably best to omit it from this record.
