Trying to get Amazon to price-match

From what I've heard, Amazon is not as gung-ho on price matching as they used to be. I've even heard from a few authors that, instead of price matching, they received a notice that they were in violation of Amazon's TOS.

Price matching is something that is entirely up to Amazon and they are not likely to do it unless they have incentive. The biggest incentive is that you also have a catalog of books for sale with them that your free book will lead to. The other is the outlet where the book is free. If you are still charging money on Smashwords, they aren't likely to price match. Especially if the Play promo is temporary. It takes weeks to match sometimes.
