Louise | 590 comments This is a thread for posting and discussing suggested themes for group reads, not for recommending individual books.

----------

Because I don't really want the same predictable names and bestsellers nominated over and over again each month, I've decided that most of our group read nominations nominations should fall within a theme.

Books may fit into more than one of these themes of course, and that's great, they can be nominated for any theme they fit within (though maybe provide a short explanation of how they fit, if it's not immediately obvious). This thread is for anyone who wants to suggest and discuss proposed themes and for the mods to work out a schedule. It is not for nominating individual books.

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 15 comments I'm fine with mod picked themes. My one request would be that we don't do the read a black book for February, or October? (I think I remember from another group that being the UK's Black History Month), read GLBTQ book in June thing. That already happens in so many groups. And I really hate the way it sets up non straight white authors as something you read once a year.

message 3: by Louise, Group Founder (last edited Jun 22, 2015 02:56PM) (new)

Louise | 590 comments Yeah, if we did it would by UK dates, so Black History Month is October and LGBT History is February. But I see your point in it being a bit much when every group you're in does the same theme.

Am actually in agreement with you that I hate the idea of it being used as an 'ok, we've done one month of this, lets get back to the straight white people now'. My only thought in suggesting it was to ensure that we read at least one non straight white author a year.

So I think I'll keep them as potential themes but won't do them on their respective months (UK or US). That sound ok to people?

message 4: by amber (last edited Jun 22, 2015 09:01PM) (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 15 comments I don't have a problem with having them as themes. I agree with you that sometimes diversifying requires making a deliberate choice. It's just the month attachment that I don't like.

message 5: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments That works for me. Shall make a note of that and make sure I don't pick those themes for either of their respective 'months'.

And thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 15 comments Sounds good to me.

You're welcome. :)

Louise | 590 comments Great :)

So I'm beginning to pencil in a very sketchy timetable in the first post. Its still subject to change (e.g. waiting to know what sort of book we go for in August before I pick a theme for September) and suggestions are always welcome.

Melissa (ladybug) | 47 comments Banned books might be a good theme sometimes. :)

message 9: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments Ooooh, yes I like that one. Will add it to the list!

message 10: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments In fact, I think I might make that November's theme. Thank you.

Melissa (ladybug) | 47 comments :) What made me think of it, is my local library has a display for Banned book Month. :)

message 12: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments I didn't even realise it was banned book month. I should probably pay more attention to these things.

Anyway, the nomination thread for it is now up!

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'd be happy to see Historical Fiction for May 2016.

message 14: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) I was thinking about themes. These are just ideas of course! What about:
- war and confluct in November (end if WW1 then)
- mythology/tales/beliefs in March (Saint Patrick)

message 15: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm new to this group and just wanted to say that the themes look fab and I'm really excited to be taking part this year.

In response to the idea of having months for minority authors, I'm in support of it, but if we could also collectively make sure that minorities are nominated every month as well as on the allocated months that would be great.

message 16: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1505 comments I love the mythology/tales/beliefs theme, and I think we could be introduced to quite a few new folklores from this group of readers, which would hopefully include authors of diversity.

message 17: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn Pre-1900 classic

Elizabeth (Alaska) Marilyn wrote: "Pre-1900 classic"

Oh, excellent!

message 19: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn Pick a decade. 1920s. 1960s. While we read around the world, we also read through time.

message 20: by Kairia (last edited Jan 12, 2017 02:56AM) (new)

Kairia Here are my suggestions:
-Books that have been translated to English from their original language.
-Comedy/Humor
-Autobiography/Biography

@Camille
I LOVE the folklore idea.

message 21: by Anna (new)

Anna W. (westermeyeram) A recent book for all readers but especially women is: Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk. Due out Tuesday, read my review here: https://amwestermeyer.wordpress.com/2... -- it was definitely worth the time, and would be a valuable group read! :)

message 22: by Mary (new)

Mary Walker | 2 comments Hi I am new to the group and look forward to reading about the themes - looks interesting! I am all for minority authors too!

message 23: by Muskan (new)

Muskan | 1 comments Hello All,
Im new in this group and good read. Would anyone mind explaining me how things go on here? How often the discussions happen? Do books get planned ahead to be discussed?

message 24: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 22 comments Hello from a cold but sunny day in Germany!
I would like to recommend for the March challenge the book/novel "A Pomegranate and The Maiden" by Tamara Agha-Jaffar. It's greec myth, protagonists are Persephone and Demeter. Very interesting! It's aviable on Kindle.
I like myth, and goddesses, and I like to read them as being friends.
Have a nice time!
Suzanne

You need to post in the March nominations thread. This is a suggestion for themes only.

There are two polls up now for February and nominations have been opened for the March read. You can introduce yourself in the introductions thread. and Welcome!

Louise | 590 comments This is a thread for posting and commenting on suggested themes, not for recommending or discussing individual books.

If you wish to make a nomination, you are welcome to go to the nomination threads and do so (provided the book fits the months theme). Or, if you just want to discuss a book, we have plenty of places for that, including the 'what are you reading?' and 'what did you just finish?' threads, and the whole of the 'Book Discussion' subsection of the forums.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 4033 comments Louise, I'm a fan of a combination of voted-for themes and mod-selected.

One additional theme possibility is indigenous peoples, whether as characters or authors. Either North America or South America, in addition to Australia, would offer lots of interesting options.

I love the idea of an indigenous authors theme. I was just thinking that as I was reading through the Canadian authors discussion. I was wondering how many of the mentioned authors were indigenous people.

Also, just going through this month's selections, I think it would be good to break up the Mythology/Folklore theme into multiple themes in the future. We're getting a lot of good nominations and I hate having these great themes kind of drown each other out so to speak.

Maybe we could do a Religion and Beliefs themed read as well.

message 31: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments I really like the indigenous authors theme too. Definitely adding that one. Can throw in Religion/Beliefs as well.

Conversely, I quite like that some of the themes are so broad we get a massive variety, builds my bookshelves better than 12 nominations all retelling myths from one mythology. But I totally understand what you mean and I am very prepared to be outvoted on that! Anita, you can also of course go completely off list and do pretty much whatever theme you like when you run a nom thread too, the list is only a collection of suggestions.

The decades idea earlier, I really like, but I think that probably works best as a challenge rather than a group read theme because to do a century requires 10 months dedicated just to that. And if/when we're consistently active enough to add a third group read in, I've already got my eye on it being a bi-monthly non-fiction between the 'read around the world' months.

In fact I might start up a 'read through time' challenge thread later today or tomorrow.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Louise wrote: "In fact I might start up a 'read through time' challenge thread later today or tomorrow. "

Fabulous! I've seen people with a challenge to read a book published in each of the years of the 20th century, which is a multi-year challenge. I'd be glad to see something similar for any period of time, whether for every year, or split into somewhat larger spans of time. Would you do this like the Read Around the World, where we're challenged over a longer timeframe than just 2017?

message 33: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments It would be like the Read Around the World and A-Z challenges, an unlimited timeframe. Though of course people are free to challenge themselves to complete it in a shorter timeframe if they want. And I was considering both decades and yearly options.

Aiming to get it up tomorrow now.

Lyn Jensen | 42 comments Nomination: "The Pajama Boy" by Ginger Mayerson (Wapshott Press) which is set in Japan--but no sense limiting it to a "Read Around the World" niche.

Hi Lyn, see Louise's message #28: "This is a thread for posting and commenting on suggested themes, not for recommending or discussing individual books."

I'm afraid nominations for our February read are now closed (you can vote on the 'polls' page).

Our March group read theme is 'Myths/Folklore/Legends', so if your book falls within that category feel free to nominate it in the designated March nomination thread.
