Welcome! I like your major! Have you ever read Sir Karl Popper? I know he's not a woman, but he's one of the scientific philosophers I've read some of.

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1505 comments Welcome Sandy, Susan, and Sairah :) Diversity seems to be the theme of this year and it looks like we'll all be able to help each other broaden our horizons. Very excited for up-and-coming reads and challenges

Valerie Brown | 14 comments Hi All - hope everyone is well! I am from the Niagara region in Ontario, Canada. I noticed Karin + Elizabeth posting about women writer's, so I looked through your threads + decided to join.

I am also quite an eclectic reader, and read quite a bit in any given year. I don't often participate in book discussions, but i do like to read others comments + see what people are reading - to expand the bookshelf!

I was curious, so I looked to see how many books by women I read last year. It was 68 (out of 136 total read). I'm not sure that I will participate in the challenges (I already have a bunch); but I saw in another thread that there may be an opportunity to track books read in 2017, by women authors.

Diana | 1 comments Hello everyone,

I'm an reader and a writer too. Reading has been my passion from the moment I learnt how to read. From Enid Blyton's books, to Sweet valley high and now as an adult to 'big people' books as my kids would say. I look forward to knowing all of you.

message 156: by Zandra (new)

Zandra (zandra01) | 2 comments Hi! I'm Zandra and I'm originally from Canada but have been travelling Asia for the past 2 years, and am now currently in South America! I joined this group with the intent to expand my bookshelf & support female authors. I was particularly interested in the "read around the world" portion of the group! I'm fascinated by different cultures and traditions and I feel that may be lacking in my book collection, so hopefully this changes that!

message 157: by Jercival (new)

Jercival Hello, I'm Jack and from Australia. Also here to expand my reading horizons to include more female authors. Hoping to find plenty of great suggestions and discussion from this group :)

message 158: by Karin (new)

Karin Welcome, Zandra and Jack!

Zandra, I'm originally from Canada as well, born a stone's through from the Pacific Ocean. (so, BC.)

I've never been to Australia but have always wanted to go (Just never managed to save up enough money!)

message 159: by Cristina (new)

Cristina Tarantino (ctarantino) | 1 comments Hi everyone my name is Cristina, but I usually go by Sakina. I am originally from Spain but was born and raised in Germany. I lived in Florida for a couple of years, and am now again in Germany.

I took a class in University about female authors (I was doing my BA in English lit.), and I was not impressed with the books I had to read. Let's just say I was happy when the semester was over. So when I saw this group I got excited about finding more reading material of female authors.

Did I mention that I am a fan of Austen's and Bronte's work.

I also like to write poetry (I am an amateur lol, not even sure if it's any good, but either way its fun), I usually post those on my tumblr. Next to reading and writing I enjoy crocheting, knitting, doodling, and snowboarding.

Anywho that's me. I am looking forward to finding my way around Goodreads since I have just joined.

Looking forward to checking out the suggestions and reading lots.

:)

message 160: by Kairia (new)

Kairia Hello everyone! My name is Kayla and I'm from the U.S.

I have never participated in a group and hopefully joining this group will change things. I have a HUGE backlog of books I've been meaning to read (on top of my lists of movies, shows, and video games...) but I will try to participate to the best of my capability, even if I end up finishing books a bit late.

I don't normally pay attention to the gender of the author when I pick out a book but I figured it couldn't hurt to try reading books particularly written by women.

message 161: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Jan 12, 2017 07:48AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Welcome, everyone! I note that sometime in the past day or two our membership surpassed 1000. When GR first made us a featured group in early December, we were a group of somewhere around 200. Great gains! I look forward to reading women along with you.

message 163: by Megan (new)

Megan Beauchamp Hi everyone! I am from Wisconsin, and have been on Goodreads for a while, but I am just starting to really get into it.

I have always had a core group of my favorite women authors, but would like to read more variety. I would also like to discover some new authors this year, especially women of color. I am excited to be part of the group and read some fantastic books this year!

message 164: by Kathi (new)

Kathi Hello :)
I'm Kathi, 26, feminist from Germany and I want to activly choose more books written by women*. I'm doing quite good because of an addiction for Charlaine Harris and Cleo Coyle at the moment, but I want to search for more and deeper stuff here.
Greetings!

message 165: by Robert (new)

Robert | 1 comments Hi all,
Are men allowed in this group??! hehehehehhehehe.....I'm Robert from Australia and my mates called me a "male femminist" in high school because I was always defending some girl or woman against male chauvinism and 'bad vibrations'. At a certain point in life, I got bored with reading male authors...so I opted for women writers...out of curiosity and wanting to know more of women's universe. So here I am....be kind with me :):)

Kali Larsen | 16 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Kali and I'm a law student from Canada. School doesn't leave me a whole lot of time for reading for fun, but I do what I can.

My usual genre is fantasy which is often dominated by men, but lately I've also been reading a lot of biographies and historical fiction. I probably won't manage (or even try) to read the nominated book every month, but I'm going to try and read them when I can.

A | 2 comments Hi all!

I'm Ana and found this great group during my search for those also interested in the women authors out there. I was looking to see others recommendations of women authors (especially the obscure ones I may not hear about where I am) from a range of different backgrounds and nations with books of varying themes, so this group seemed perfect for me!!

Lovely to meet you all!

Ps: apologies, but I'm still getting used to the goodreads settings, and group functionality etc.

Beth Green (thegreenauthor) | 4 comments Nice to meet you, Ana! I'm a woman author and I just joined this group recently. I haven't posted much but the threads are interesting to read. Everyone seems to have some great recommendations!

Suzanne | 22 comments Hello everyone! Welcome to new readers!
I just read a post from Susan C (another group?), she recommended 1. Dinner at The Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler
2. Songs in An Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris.
Both of them are very good.
Because they are females ;))
Have an nice day
Suzanne

Elizabeth (Alaska) Suzanne wrote: "Does any of you knows a biography of FDR written by a woman?"

No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II by Doris Kearns Goodwin

message 181: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 22 comments Thanks! I looked for Doris Kearns but I think I overread this while searching for Lyndon B. Johnson.

message 182: by Kali (new)

Kali (kalim81) | 6 comments Doris Kearns Goodwin is fantastic! I've read Team of Rivals and The Bully Pulpit and really enjoyed both. I'll add the FDR bio to my list.

message 187: by J. (new)

J. Schlenker | 2 comments Hi, I'm J. Schlenker from Kentucky in the US. I'm both an author and reader, a reader long before becoming an author in my retirement. My current writing project involves a woman I met when I was 8. She was born into slavery 1858. I basically write about women.

I see that The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is the book selection for this month. I listened to this book sometime last year while out hiking. It is one of my top favorite books.

Namaste,
J.

Susan MacIver (susanmaciver) | 2 comments Hello everyone! I'm Susan, an author and avid reader from Arizona. I've just read through this thread and this seems like a great group of people, I'm so happy to join you all :)

This is the first group I've joined so I'm excited to see how it changes my reading habits! I've always made a point to read female authors, but the idea of adding more books by female authors from other countries is a wonderful idea that I can't believe I didn't think of myself. Funny how that happens!

message 189: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1505 comments Hello Yvonne, J, and Susan. Welcome to the group!

Yvonne, is urban fantasy like The Darkest Part of the Forest? Because I loved that book, but am unfamiliar with the term urban fantasy.

J, I hope you'll jump in and share your love of The Guernsey Literary and Potato... with the rest of us!

Susan, this group has opened me up to many clever, interesting, and engaging ways of reading more female authors. Like yourself, I always made a point of reading women, but I have found so much more here with this group. I hope you find much more than you were thinking of looking for :)

message 190: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (ycomtois) | 5 comments Anita

Yes it is however I haven't read that one. I will put it on my list :)

"Urban fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Urban fantasy exists on one side of a spectrum, opposite high fantasy, which is set in an entirely fictitious world. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements." -Wikipedia definition haha

alba ₊⁺☀︎₊⁺⋆.˚ (noctermreader) Hey there, I'm Alba. I'm currently studying in college Advertising, PR and Marketing. I always loved reading and these past years I'm more interested in learning about feminism and feminism itself.

I'm really excited about this group and what it has to offer. Also, I'm looking forward to discover new female authors from around the world :)

Hi Liesl, in which city do you live? There are for sure some English Book Clubs in Madrid and Barcelona, and at least a couple of bookshops where you may even find a community where to create your own...I don´t know how it is in other cities though, but meetup seems a good place to look for or create a book club.

Part Two will follow ... sometimes

message 197: by Marie-Claude (new)

Marie-Claude Dufour My name is Marie-Claude, I live in Montreal, Canada, and I'm soon to be 39 years old.

At the beginning of January, I gave myself the challenge of reading 26 books this year, and a few days later, I thought it would be fun to commit to reading only books written by women. Because I don't know enough about women litterature and I want to broaden my mind. Since in 2017 I vowed to read only books written by women, my usual go-to writers (like Neil Gaiman, who's a favorite of mine) are off-limits so I felt I needed help finding good things to read, hence my joining this group. I'm looking forward to discover new writers and discuss new readings with you all.
