Ashlee What were your initial thoughts on Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1) by Tahereh Mafi ?

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 127 comments It's not a good book to do audio unless you are reading along because of the crossing out. It can get confusing.

Ashlee Yeah I can imagine that!

SO excited to pick this one up. Just about to finish A Court of Thorns and Roses then on to Shatter Me. I've heard so much. I hope it'll live up to the hype!

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 127 comments For as many people who like it there are the same amount that don't like it. I have tried to read this book before and the main girl was pretty bland as far as her attitude. It might have something to do with trying to listen to the audio though. The voice of the actor was pretty mono tone like she was bored or something.

Ashlee Id definitely give the print version a go if I were you Chakara...I'm normally a huge advocate of audio but I seriously don't see how it would work with this book, you lose so much by not being able to see the page and how Mafi has structured her writing

Also, bland narrators are the worst!!!

Grace (gdaminato) | 520 comments I started with the audio. The crossing out didn't bother me - although it CAN get confusing trying keep straight what's crossed out and what's left. I found the narrator's voice annoying, though. So that's one strike against the book.

I continued through the first two sections, about 1/4 of the book and finally gave up. I just couldn't get into the story. To me, it's just a blatant adolescent fantasy. If it were marketed to adults, the cover would feature a muscled, shirtless man. I simply didn't want to spend time on this books when I have a book I know I will enjoy waiting in the wings.

Ashlee That's definitely fair enough Grace! I am the same, if a book doesn't grab me I will put it down and pick up something else, sometimes coming back to it a while later

Given that this book is written for teens and is spec fiction I think it's understandable that it reads like adolescent fantasy lol ...it's all about personal preferences isn't it?

It certainly is. Looking back, I can remember a time when a book like this would have appealed to me. Now...not so much.

I read the GoodReads synopsis a long time ago and put the book on my list then promptly forgot about it. I'm 25% through right now and mainly just confused ... I love the writing style even though reading it on the weekend with the amount of alcohol I was consuming was probably not a good idea lol. I'm hoping that some of my questions plot-wise will be answered soon as I don't want to make decisions on my opinion of characters when I have no idea what motivates them.

Daniela Gil | 2 comments I actually was worried I wasn't going to like the book but as I continued reading I got more and more into it. The crosses out words bothered me at first but then I started liking it.

Ashlee Haha I was a bit the same Hyosun! I first picked this up when I was going to sleep after a night out and was like 'wtf?' and the next day I was so confused! I gave it a break because another book I really wanted to read came out and then got back to it last month and loved it!

Josephine Knight (josieknight) | 3 comments Initially I thought this book had such an amazinly unique writing style and I was surprised at how fast paced the story was!
