An Ember in the Ashes Series by Sabaa Tahir
I finally got around to starting this yesterday and I'm only about 4 chapters in but so far so good! I agree about it having a Legend feel to it Lucy. I loved that series so hopefully this one is just as good!

This book does have a Legend feel to it.

Ok so apparently I am the only one that hasn't read Legend! Maybe I will change that and use it as my "book everyone but me has read" in the 26 challenge. about 1/2 way done, it is really good so far. Man I couldn't live in that brutal society.
(view spoiler)
Glad you liked it Brandy! I can't believe we need to wait so long for the next book but at least it's not a standalone!

I agree! she needs the help so shut up stand still and listen!
I know! That ending! I think I'm just happy it wasn't as much of a (view spoiler) as I expected it to be.
I still have no words.. I want to start my next book but I just need time to process after all of that.
And I don't want to wait either Brandy. April?? blah. I already have it marked down as a BOTM in our bookshelf.

I listened to the audio version and the narrator has an accent. so for a while I couldn't figure out why everyone was calling her a Liar. lol
Haha that's good - I still had the audio on hold when I finished the physical book. If I never ordered the real book from the library I'd still be waiting for it so I'm glad I was able to grab it. Was the audio any good?
Done! Such a good book!!! I love it when they hit hard from beginning to end! So glad I am finally in on the goodness with you guys!

I know right! I'm kind of an impatient person, and it was hard to stay out of the convo! I hope the next one is as good or better too. April should come sooner than later!

Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.
Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.
Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

I just did a reread on book one so that I will be ready for this book! I am going to start it next week
Started book 2. It picks up right where the 1st left off, no recap, so I am glad I took the time to re-read book 1.
I had forgotten so much! I think it was worth the time. Did you see that she signed on to do 2 more books?
I have had book one on hold at the library to do a re read. I had a feeling with all the reading we've been doing I wouldn't remember. Good to know that won't be a waste of time!
Um, holy crap! I can't believe this book, totally blown away with the twists and the emotion. Oh yeah Elias's mother still a b****
I'm waiting on one person for AEITA and three for ATATN so it should work out perfectly. All the reviews are great though!
Ok ok ok I'm going to re-read the first book. I'll have forgotten so much if I jump into the second book. Brie - I'll wait for you to read the second book?

If we both re read, we should be perfectly timed for the second Sara!
Sara wrote: "Perfect!!"I'm almost finished with AEITA and I'm one person away from ATATN, how's it looking for you?
I'm getting there! I'll definitely try to be done with the first one by the time you get the second one!

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.
Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.
