Her aunt abused him sexually, that's why he thought she was a goddess.
By the way their only friends-his best friend killed himself, and his only friend left (Susan) just stopped talking to him. I've been through that and it's something awful, I understand why he is so messed up.

Yes, it does. It specifically implies that she regularly molested him on his visits to her house. He also suppressed that memory for years and remembers it at one point in the book, If I remember correctly, it's around the same time he has a huge breakdown.

- his only friend committed suicide, and he probably blames himself for it. not noticing the signs, or feeling as though he was a bad friend that his mate couldn't open up to him
-lack of friend, lonely. He literally has no one he can talk about stuff you cant talk with your family about
-overshadowed? maybe potentially his sister has a boyfriend who comes round the house, brother plays football for a big team so not a lot of attention is on him?
-his aunt, abused him when he was younger and when she died he blamed himself because she went to get his present. (another death he thinks is his fault)
-bullied at new school, by the other students for being different.
thats all i can think of atm. but there are tons of reasons :( makes me want to give him big ole hug
