Jill Kramer (jillkramer) | 27 comments There are terms used in the Popular Shelves section on my book page that I don't understand. What are "shelves," anyway? What's the difference between "to-read" and "added"? And what in the world is "w-w-i-d"???

I've asked this question on a couple of other GR pages and never got an answer. Hope someone can help!

Melodie Ramone (melodieramone) Shelves are lists people can create to put books on to organize them. Like "Loved!" and "Must read asap", or "fantasy", "romance" or even, "Hated!". Things like that so they can remind themselves. Adding a book to a "to read" list means it's prioritized as something that the person does eventually want to read. Added just means they've added it without choosing one of the "read" "want to read" options or putting it onto a shelf. As far as w-w-i-d, it's probably an abbreviation for somebody's personal shelf. It might be only they know what the heck it stands for! Hope this helped!

Sadie Forsythe | 21 comments Melodie nailed it for you. I think the main thing to know is that everyone has three automatic shelves on registration (want to read, read, and currently reading) after that they can create as many as they want. I have 7 additional shelves, for example. One is called a-2-r. To me that means available to read...means nothing to anyone else but helps me keep my own list of books straight. WWID is probably a similar thing, like Melodie originally said.

The 'popular shelves' will change as more people add your book their personal shelves. The popular ones shown are the shelves most people have your book on.

I've been trying to figure out WWID, but I'm at a loss!

Jill Kramer (jillkramer) | 27 comments Okay, now I get it -- when you "add" a shelf, you can call it anything you want! Thank you all!

I've done a quick Google, and it might stand for What Would I Do?

But that's still not overly clear, unless it's short for 'what would I do if I wasn't afraid?'.

Or maybe World We... something.

Jill Kramer (jillkramer) | 27 comments Also wondering... when GR people mark your book to-read, what percentage of them actually BUY it? And how long does it take for them to get around to it?

How about We're Walking in Dreamland? or Wait, Wait, I'm Dizzy!

message 9: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) Jill, I doubt anyone has any real research on that because it's all so contingent upon the individual, the popularity/hype of the book, whether one must read the book before buying or, if you're like me, you'll buy it if you LOVE the cover.

If anyone has a factual answer to that question, I'd think it would be GOODREADS itself, or those who run it! Maybe contact the organization.

Tala (tala2) Jill, I have 54 shelves and counting. I use them to organize the ones I've already read mostly. I add a book to the to-read shelf if I'm interested in it for some reason, so I don't forget it. I add them to my wishlist shelf if I will def. buy it. I've bought books right away and there's some that have been on my to-read shelf for a while.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) Some people's to-read shelves have thousands of books!

Yep, mine has around 900. I read a lot of books last year and like I stated before my to-read shelf is really more like an I'm interested in shelf.

Jill Kramer (jillkramer) | 27 comments Thanks, guys, that helps. A bit discouraging, though. I got all excited when I saw that 245 people marked my book as to-read. Now I see that doesn't really mean much. I guess it takes some great reviews to motivate people!

message 14: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) Jill, I'm not an author so I don't know what you're going through but I can imagine. I have author friends, and it is tough getting established. Hope things get rolling for you. By the way, what is the name of your book/link?

message 15: by Tala (new)

Tala (tala2) Jill, I only add books that I'm interested in and know I will like. I have no idea how the statistics work out, but I read over 300 books last year so I do get to the ones I add. I also read some books just for review and last year I beta read some, so don't get discouraged. If you need/want reviews ask some bloggers?

Here's the link, Vicki: Criminal Decision It's about a heroic mom out to save her little girl against all odds. It's based on true cases I covered as a journalist. Thanks for the good wishes!

Don't ever get discouraged. Every time somebody sees your name or the title of your book, it's in their head someplace. Once word of mouth starts to spread, they'll hear it or see it again and remember they saw it first and it looked good. It takes time...and endless patience...but if you use both to the best of your ability, it pays off. :)

I'm sure you're right, Melodie. Patience has never been one of my virtues, but I'm biting the bullet. I'm hoping at least a couple of my giveaway winners will give me reviews.

Karl Perera (karl_p) | 16 comments I just did a search on Google looking to figure out what the difference between "added" and "marked to read" was and Melodie thanks you answered the question clearly. Now I know!

Was asking my self a similar question about the number of books people actually end up reading from their to read list.

I am doing a giveaway of my book and getting loads of people adding it and marking it to read. Two have actually read it from about 200 so far.

I am another author looking for a break and finding it quite difficult to get my book out there.
