Royal Escape from the Topic - for off topic chit chat

How fun! I've got family coming that week or I just might have hopped a plane. And keep us posted on upcoming things, too!

Yes, yes that would be fun! For all of us, anyway...

Sooooooo, I bet they do sometime, but for sure it won't be next year. If they see our enthusiasm, do you think it might help for 2017-2018?

I dunno, but we are an enthusiastic bunch!

For those of you that haven't seen GR's plans for groups.

Could be worse - especially after the disaster that is their new home page plan. At least our avatars stay rectangular, But another useless feature (my mentioned books) & groups may be harder for newbys to find.

Sounds good to me.

I soo understand. Could we meet up at the AGM? I agree that this year's AGM made a cavernous dent in my literary budget. You could private message me on FB: Lori Mulligan Davis.

I do love Sylvester though! *sigh*

That's too, too bad, Melanie. I understand, though. I enjoyed my flight to Australia, but it was, perhaps, a one-in-a-lifetime for me.

That's lovely that you've been to Australia! I may be biased but I think it's a great place for a holiday :) Where did you go?

Been lucky enough to go to Oz twice on holiday. We loved it!
I am afraid Chicago is not a possibility, so I will have to miss Sylvester. Thankfully, it is not one of my absolute favourites so I shan't feel too upset. I am not aware of anyone ever putting on a play of one of GH's books over here in the UK. That would be neat!

Lifeline's adaptations are excellent. I know Christina Calvit's Jane Eyre and A Room with a View are available for other theaters through Playscripts. I'm not sure if she's published her GH scripts. I wish a UK could mount one. She's done Talisman Ring, Cotillion, and Pistols for Two.

Just curious about how everyone feels about the (future) new home page & removal of the discussion tabs. Groups we will get to by hovering on our avatar in the upper right - I'm hoping GR will still list them under community.

I do want to be able to find things like groups and lists though, I take it it's not very user friendly?

Today's thread was a fascinating example of GR speak.

I'm using this on my phone and the menu is already organised the way you describe so I assume theyre aligning it with the mobile web version?

That said, i didnt use the home page before and probably won't use it again so it should be tailored for the people who do use it.

Same as Louise and Susan - I only use my iPad and go right to my homepage.

*glares menacingly at Louise S* I kid, I kid! I asked for other people's opinions because I want to hear them!
There's still some things I find pointless, like random books i have shelved
If you mean books you have shelved as "to read" or similar you can control that. If you go to your profile & click on "edit profile" you should get various tabs/options.
Unfortunately at this stage you can't control what other people choose to put in their feeds. If I have liked a review of someone who uses enormous or seizure inducing gifs, I try to remember to go back to my profile & exit it.
With the new look there has been a vague promise of more customisation of our feeds. I'm hoping the above is what GR means.

I usually come in through my emails. Nowadays if I come on the site directly I go through the awards page & delete any "awards" that I'm sure aren't awards by GR standards. (I'm a GR librarian) Then I toggle between Updates (which is being replaced by the Home Page) & Discussions (Groups which GR is going to make a little harder to find)
On my phone I just check my to read lists or my groups.
So I guess the changes just bother heavy users like myself who are on a laptop or PC?

My discussions are blank, I suppose I never worked out what they were for so I won't miss them... I think of groups as something completely separate and never accessed them that way.
In all honestly Goodreads has never been the most intuitive website, and it has things I would love to fix but I've got used to its foibles?

Oh man, I was so confused when I started! If that Readers Q&A had been there when I started I would have been putting my reviews there. My sister had to help me find the review spot for my first 6 reviews. I would have given up if it wasn't for her! (oh irony - she has now left the site :D )
So you are a member of this group but that doesn't appear under the discussion tab?
Tadiana - updates will become the Homepage. Usually I read 25-30 reviews a day, the only day I spent the whole day on it I only read 5. Just too hard to have to keep scrolling through the book blurb. :/

It could be because I requested e-mail updates maybe?

Ok this is what I see. The Groups I belong to are under Discussions. I can choose the wasteland that is the Books option but for me that is mostly book discussions that aren't in English or very old threads.

I still doubt I'd use it though, I find e-mail updates far more useful than remembering to check a site and the book ones seem rather random... I don't think I have much patience for it but maybe if I'm bored sometime
Thanks for helping me find it though! There's probably so much about this site that I don't know exists!

Or you have a bug! You'll probably curse me when you see your book threads! I don't read many classics or best sellers so stuff stays there forever!

That is what I see (both on my Kindle Fire and on my computer) -- I constantly use the Discussions page. It lets me see what discussions have been most recently active in all my groups and I can then decide where I want to dive in first :)

That's what I have Kindle Fire, and laptop set to too. I can see at a glance which of my groups has been active most recently, besides using the notifications button. On my iPad, GR opens in updates with the number of new notifications showing in red which I click on to go directly to them. Occasionally I skim through Updates to see what my friends are reading, planning on reading or reviewed, but I'm usually only interested in what friends thought of a book I am planning to read.
I would miss not having the Discussions with my groups being my opening page.

With the new home page I have to zoom up to 125% so it goes down to two columns. It's going to be annoying zooming up & down when I go to other sites.

Wow, you weren't kidding - I've never noticed it but I just clicked on the Books option - wasteland indeed! It's truly not an intuitive site, is it?! I'm just so glad I managed to find this lovely group - I guess I'm not the complete Luddite I thought I was...

I feel exactly the same way - toss the phone or iPad at my husband or son and say - "please make this work" - or put it down in frustration and pick up a book!

Yes, and I'd rather eat worms than have to talk to "tech support". No, really, alive, crawly worms...

The link to get back to the 'old' homepage is located on the side (on the left with my Kindle & on the right with my computer just to make it even more confusing!) underneath an ad and then the little 2 column list of links like this (sorry, I don't know how to do 2 columns so this is just one of them):

Apparently not for everyone - someone posted a screenshot on Feedback showing that was missing. :) Probably a bug. Or like my screenshot above where the writing is bluish? Apparently not everyone has that either. :)
Computer genius that I am, I've "mislaid" the addon I was using that made the font nice & black. My daughter is coming tonight - I'll see if she can find it! :D

Hello, everyone. I went to the Lifeline Theater "concert reading" of the adaptation of "Sylvester" on Saturday night. I read it twice in the weeks before the show to be really prepared. I was able to say in the audience response time that Christina Calvit once again cemented my opinion that she is my favorite literary adapter. She did the best job that could ever be imagined! Each vivid character (and they ALL ARE, aren't they?) was fully depicted. They actors had all they needed to bring them to life. She and her actors captured every nuance! Sylvester had just the right mixture of entitlement and kindness. Phoebe ("Sparrow") had intelligence, candor, and spirit. Sylvester's mother had loving wisdom. Lady Ianthe was pitch perfect. Georgie. Tom. Phoebe's grandmother. Everyone. I wondered before the show how Christina would be able to translate a book with so much interior thought into a live performance. SHE DID IT SO WELL. I think that part of her strength is that she loves GH as much as any of us, and I know that's saying a lot. She doesn't try to make GH into something she's not. She delights in the characters for themselves. Obviously, to put all that time into something that will be performed only once, it has to be a labor of love.
At present, Lifeline has no plans to mount this as a running show. I hope they can find a place for it in their future lineup, because it's all ready to go. Even with only a few rehearsals, the cast showed themselves perfect for their parts. My daughter (we call her LoriOnlyMoreSo) drove 12-13 hours (from Virginia to Chicago) for the performance and was glad she did. Sorry you couldn't make the journey, too! If it is ever fully staged, I will give you tons of lead time and you might want to make the trip. Maybe that GH get-together really CAN happen. I gave Christina snippets of our best wishes off the GH Page and she was blown away to know so many fellow GH enthusiasts wished to come. So you were there in spirit and helped make her evening!

What a nice thought, Lori! Thanks for the update.
