Thanks, QN PoohBear! Totally agree on Jacinda (too soon to decide to write her in for 2020? Nah, she wouldn’t want to uproot her whole fam to move here and run things for us...hopefully, we can get someone good next time around!)

That’s scary, you don’t know how many weapons were laying around if no one ever checked!

Exactly. A friend of my sister's is a collector & he has 40 guns. He doesn't use them - most belonged to his late father.

I imagine a number of people will give up a token number of guns & attempt to hold on to some. But it sounds like Jacinda is also planning to tighten up the penalties on that.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments Good for her! I always worry about the careless owners who don’t secure weapons, or forget about them or have too many and don’t keep track - a child could get hold of one and harm themselves or someone else.

My son clay shoots and for several years now he's kept his guns in a gun safe at my place out in the garage and the ammunition he procures when he want to go clay shooting. He lives in Auckland. His licence came up for renewal and he advised me I would probably get a call from the police wanting to sight the safe and guns. He had given them the combination to the safe. That would be almost 5 years ago now. I have never had a call or a visit!
So changing the gun laws will only work if they are properly administered and enforced. Otherwise another wasted effort with just lip service paid to appease the immediate issue. (Ms Cynical) :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Well there are some real *!#@*!*@s in this world.

Our Airbnb guest had a bag stolen off his bike last night when he stopped to use the toilet in a small settlement near here. Passport (!) ereader, food, ph charger & what he is really concerned about, accessories for his bike which he brought over from Spain. He has managed to replace the ph charger, but being the weekend, our police station is closed & so is our bike shop.He is staying an extra night with us while he sorts things out. He isn't as concerned about his passport as I am as he had a photocopy of it on him.

Anyone travelling to NZ - in the normal way, we are a low crime country, but thefts from cars & bikes are a big thing here. :(

I'm glad he's bearing up. I must say that NZ does have a good reputation (as far as I've heard!), I don't suppose there's any country in the world which can boast that it's entirely free from petty, opportunistic theft.

Yeah, he heard a car stop, but couldn't get outside fast enough.

He was a little emotional last night, but coping well today.

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments I'm so sorry for your guest Carol. That's rough. My friend lost her purse in Boston including photo ID to get home and her husband's new platinum American Express credit card. I forced her to file a police report hoping she would at least get the ID back. The police called my house while we were on the train home to report someone turned in the purse and everything was still there. She was lucky. I hope your guest gets home safely.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Our guest still with us as it was impossible to sort anything out on Sunday. He has gone down to the police station now. Fortunately he is visiting NZ for 3 months, but this is such a waste of his holiday time. & the weather not great today.

Yes the office worker at the police station wasn't very helpful, but he stuck to his guns. He's gone now to buy a helmet & accessories.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Thanks. He leaves us today. He was able to replace most of his gear yesterday, but has had to order some things & will return to Thames for one night to collect them. He is insured, but waiting for the insurance company to pay out will impact on his holiday. He is having to consider accommodation costs more carefully - & most of the budget options in our town are booked out or the hosts are on holiday themselves now.

We leave for Wellington ourselves tomorrow. But the street festival we wanted to attend is being moved indoors - terrorist risk. So disappointing, but they are expecting 100k people so the risk was too great.

It looks to have steampunk elements, but is a street festival normally. The steampunk festival we attend each year is in our own town.

LOL. Tourist mecca of the Wairarapa, Marty. Gotta pay for the vineyards and market town shopping. I believe Greytown has also become quite pricey now that it's turned itself into a market village leaving behind it farming town roots.

Yes - much of high-tech innovation leaves me cold, or feeling “meh”, but there are some lovely perks - like connecting with like-minded friends around the world!

If you go to your profile page, would that be the link they want?

Thanks for all the nice words. I have another Kiwi GR friend I hope to meet up with soon.

Just about to leave Napier (the Art Deco city.)

Great trip, although it might have been better to say you'll be where Boy was filmed rather than shot :):):)
And you'll be home by the time the next flurry of cold, wet southerlies arrive. Enjoy the next couple of warmer days and get home safely.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Lesley wrote: "...although it might have been better to say you'll be where Boy was filmed rather than shot :):):)"

Hahahaha!

I'm back. A day early as the weather packed up while we were in Opotiki, so we decided to drive on. In hindsight, we should have stopped in Te Puke (pronounced pookey, not puke!) but our cat was so pleased to see us & it was nice to be in our own bed.

Next time, I'm away for a long period I will ask Critterbee to take over the group discussion (although you guys managed just fine without me! :) ) I was surprised how poor the internet was in parts of the central North island, but was much better than I thought it would be in the East Cape.

Trip highlight (other than meeting Lesley & seeing family!) was St Marys Church & the oldest Pohutukawa tree in Tikitiki.

These pictures don't do the church justice.

Ha! Normally the boss, although she is feeling very insecure today - even followed me into the bathroom!

I'll try to put my own pictures up later. I loved the East Cape but couldn't live there. Just too isolated, other than Gisborne.

message 2793: by Jane (new)

Jane | 178 comments I have a question about our group reads. I know we’ve been reading the books in “written” order but all I can find online is a list of the books in the “publication” order. Is there a list somewhere I could look at? I’m asking mainly because I’m kind of in the mood to read Venetia, Frederica, or The Talisman Ring. But I don’t want to read them, if they’re coming up for group reads early next year. But if the group already read them in 2017 before I joined, than I wouldn’t mind reading them now to play catch-up.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hi Jane

This year's reading list is here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

In GH's case, other than some of her short stories, written & publication are the same. Venetia & Frederica will be coming up next year, the Talisman Ring isn't Regency so if we do read again, it won't be before the later part of 2020.

If you need any help finding the old threads let me know. :)

Me either- and now I guess it won’t be there even if I do ever get to Paris. But it is heartbreaking to be there since the 12th century, and to burn so fast.
