Karlyne you make used/recycled tea leaves sound divine. I like to use mine in my flower beds as well

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Besides smelling wonderful, how does it benefit the plants (black thumb here)?

message 2703: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments They're like coffee grounds, in that they loosen the soil, and beneficial worms and such also love them. When we lived up in a former mining mountain town, one of my friends had nothing but rocks (from the leftover placer mining) in her yard, and she said that her flowers and veggies lived on leftover caffeine because they had no top soil! Luckily, they drank a lot of coffee and tea...

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments That's a good tip to know!

I am baking the tapioca bread now - have no idea how it will turn out.

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Anything with garlic has to be good, right?!

message 2706: by Jane (new)

Jane | 178 comments Once again, something I had no idea about. Who knew the things in the bubble tea were actually tapioca?! (I seriously need to get out more!!) One of my nieces lived in Thailand for awhile and she has tried to get me hooked on the bubble tea, but I really don't like little rubbery bits in my beverages.

I'm not a purist - I'm fine with a tea bag, but I do like Assam tea (any strong, black tea is good!), so I might have to try Karlyne's suggestion. My neighbor gets the used coffee grounds from one of the local coffee shops and sprinkles them all around her hydrangeas; the plants are beautiful so I guess it works!!

message 2707: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Carol, I started Green Dolphin Street yesterday (in hopes that I have matured in the decades since I last read it, so I can appreciate what Goudge is telling me), so I was already thinking of you, and then I read about yesterday's Christchurch horror. What a sad, sad day.

message 2708: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2186 comments I hadn't realised Green Dolphin Street was a book. It's a film I love. I agree about New Zealand. What makes them think this is a good idea or that it's going to benefit anyone! Words fail me really.

message 2709: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments This is just an example of a world-wide truth: crazies are everywhere.

message 2710: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments I just read the news about Christchurch. I am so heartbroken and shaking my head at the fear and hatred that led to such a horrific act. My thoughts are with New Zealand and the community of Muslims in Christchurch.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Thank you everyone.

NZ is a country that provides itself on its religious tolerance. This is just devastating.

message 2712: by Barb in Maryland (new)

Barb in Maryland | 816 comments Carol, I was thinking of you this morning when I saw the headlines. Poor New Zealand--yet another country caught up in all the insanity. So sad, really, and so terribly hateful.
And the 'why', when it comes out, will make no sense at all! It never does.

message 2713: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Evil... I always thought I'd have it figured out by now, that I'd understand. But it's still unfathomable to me why people choose it.

message 2714: by Lesley (new)

Lesley In this instance the key reason given for carrying out this act, as given by the shooter in his 74page manifest released to facebook just prior to the event, was "to reduce immigration in European lands." He also declared himself as a white supremacist, and stated that he greatly admired Donald Trump although didn't like him as a policy maker.

New Zealand had been the target for his action for 3 years, but the two Mosques in Christchurch for only three months.

He's due in court any moment now, but I doubt there will be much more information as this will only be a formality.

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Reasons for evil abound, but how in the world do you get that far down that road? I'm thinking C.S.Lewis was right when he said that every decision we make is turning us into one type of person - or the other. Sobering.

Yes, it is. Carol and Lesley and all of our friends Down Under ( in NZ and Australia), I am so sorry.

I wasn’t able to communicate earlier as I was in another town, getting a MRI and a checkup with one of my surgeons - good news, no tumor growth. But I was unable to get internet access - I am so sorry.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I feel so numb - Twin Towers numb.

The one good thing is that our PM says our gun laws are going to change.

Well two in a way. Security will tighten up for national flights. We have boarded flights in Dunedin & not gone through security until we changed planes in Christchurch.

But I wonder how much good that will do when most places in NZ you get there reasonably quickly in a car. I understand he drove from Dunedin.

I was thinking of it more from a general POV. The next terrorist might fly.

Meanwhile a debate is raging my husband's family as a couple are hunters & own & have licenses for those semi automatic shotguns.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Great news, Susan!

Carol, I hope this tragedy leads to positive change in New Zealand. Here in the USA, it's so frustrating to see the same thing happen over and over and nothing is done. As for your relatives, I thought most hunters considered it unsporting to shoot animals with semiautomatic weapons! But I'm a birder so they would never listen to me.

message 2734: by Lesley (new)

Lesley So, we had our annual March Madness Fair today. (not anything to do with US March Madness) This is where the entire shopping area is closed off and takes on a carnival atmosphere. It is usually a very casual fun time but this year, no matter how the police tried to mingle in and disguise their firearms, you couldn't help but see them and know why they were there.
A somewhat sombre fair this year.

I was out last night at a Steampunk disco thing. No police, just security came in. I think just a warning not to get any louder. Be interesting if there is more of a police presence at the actual Steampunk festival, later in the year.

Sadly whole thing was a bit of a fizzer - probably because it is St Patrick's Day today.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & there were questions last night on how Tarrant got his gun licence.

This part doesn't surprise me. My husband had a lifetime gun licence when we met. The whole time I've known him he only went hunting once. He was furious when it was changed to the 10 year licences. & no one ever came up to inspect how he stored his weapon.

He gave up the licence & sold the gun years ago.
