My problem with the cover is not the age of the girl in the picture but the fact that it's so generic. There's nothing to distinguish it from the hundreds of other historical romances published these days. Whereas - as we know - Heyer was in a class of her own.

I suppose the idea is to attract new readers with both the cover and the summary, so one should consider that a worthy cause!

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments Happy Thanksgiving to everyone from the U.S. Are you stuffed or sleeping? We had a nice celebration with most of my extended family. My cousin got a break from parenting her almost 2 year old while my nieces served as built in babysitters. They were thrilled to play with their newest cousin. My uncle's toy breed dog was not so thrilled to not be fed all those great smelling foods and be mauled by my nephew. The pup did seem happy to see me and I was happy to cuddle with him. One of my cousins did not come and so it seemed a little quiet without him-despite the 5 children! I didn't get in much reading. My MP3 player ran out of battery power and by the time I got OverDrive and a book downloaded onto my phone, we were halfway home! I hope everyone had a great day of things to be thankful for, despite the below freezing temperatures in much of the country.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments Happy Thanksgiving! Stuffed here, trying to get the energy to read or knit before I doze off...we had a quiet dinner out, just my husband, son and I - great food at one of our favorite restaurants, a good bottle of wine, and lots to be thankful for - yay!

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I was the cook this year (finally free from back pain so I can manage all the standing in the kitchen--huzzah!) so I worked off a lot of calories before packing them back in again. Delightful dinner, just four of us, relaxed and good conversation. Bon Appetit recipes worked a treat. Sending my hopes for much to be grateful for to all my GoodReads fellows!

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments We're in Medford (Oregon) until Saturday when we'll hit the road again, hopefully a not too icy and snowy one. I've had loads of fun cooking with the three grandkids here, but I do feel as though my skin has shrunk. We made chorizo and dried cherry sourdough dressing which tasted as though it ought to have come out of Bon Appetit, Abigail! A very successful dinner! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Awesome! I’m getting back in the kitchen, myself - I didn’t take on TG dinner, let the pros handle that, I was just thrilled to be here, and out in the early evening. But go, Abigail, you are woman, I hear you roar!

Small steps for me, but much to be thankful for - I even started volunteering a few hours a week at my local history museum last week, very exciting to get out in the community and meet new people. This is my new normal and I don’t want to become a recluse, buried in books ( much too easy for me to do), so I’m glad to be getting out there, balance and hearing issues and all!

Haha! No, it's raining cats and dogs; what I meant was I've eaten so much that my skin might pop! We're hoping it'll stop soon, not only for the snow piling up on the mountains, but also because today is the Great Tree Hunt and cutting in the rain takes a lot of grit!

Oh I know what you MEANT, I’m just giving you an excuse to tell yourself as you reach for one more bite...but the rain ruins it!

Wow, cutting the tree down in the rain - yes, that would definitely bring out your inner lumberjack! Personally, as a commonsensical Midwesterner, I’d head for the closest coffee shop with a book til it stops...

Teresa | 2186 comments Glad to hear you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Reading about all the lovely dinners is making me excited for Christmas here. Have ten for dinner so must start planning my menu.
Slightly off key for us this year as we always gathered at my mother's house on Christmas Eve for a small party. It's the first one since she died so I guess we'll have to start some kind of new tradition.

Teresa, I know exactly how you feel - it was tough, the first holiday season without mom a couple years ago; I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue our tradition of dinner at our favorite restaurant without her. But you know, there are so many good memories, it feels right now, we had a lovely dinner last night and drank a toast to her!

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Ah, Teresa, holidays really bring home the loss, don't they? I hope you find a new tradition that feels right. I can't do Christmas at all anymore because of all the water under that particular bridge.

Karlyne, you were right in my sister-in-law's neighborhood--she lives in the Little Applegate valley, near Jacksonville. I had a beautiful, if chilly and wet, Thanksgiving in Medford last year.

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Teresa, I know this will be difficult for you. My first Christmas after my Dad died was awful. We were trying to keep it good for my Mum, but oh how I missed my fellow Christmas fanatic. He was the one who always put the magic into Christmas when my brother and I were small and right up until the one before he died, he was fully engaged in the spirit of Christmas. The good thing is that the good memories are what carry you through. I wish you well for the forthcoming season! 😘

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments Susan in NC: Wonderful news about volunteering. History museums are my favorite. I enjoy working at a history museum some of the time. I'd prefer to be a recluse and read all the time but in between tours I research to make up for the lack of reading time. I've met some great people and too many horrid school children. The season is thankfully winding down. I'm tired and cold.

We honor our loved ones on holidays by cooking their special traditional recipes and celebrating Christmas with the Italian feast of the 7 fishes. Yuck. I voted to skip the fish and honor my mom's Norwegian ancestors with a feast of 7 cookies instead. No such luck. My parents are already trying to figure out how to squeeze everyone into our small house.

It is traditional rather than mandatory. I think carrot cake is moist and sweet enough that it doesn't really need any frosting. I usually do it as a single layer rectangle (sheet) cake and keep the frosting very thin.

message 2389: by Teresa (new)

message 2393: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments It is!
1 cup butter
2 cups dark brown sugar
Boil together 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup evap. milk or 1/2 & 1/2. Add 1 tsp. Vanilla. Beat well, let cool to lukewarm and slowly add 3-1/2 to 4 cups powdered sugar. Warning! It's delicious!

P. S. Crazy good on chocolate cake, too.

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments OK who sent the stink bugs to New England? That is one ugly, creepy, BIG bug! I saw one today floating around the living room lamp. I thought it was a spider at first but my mom was brave enough to go near it to get it and get rid of it. How on earth did they get into the house? We moved here in January and I know the house was inspected a little over a year ago! I haaaaatttee bugs! I was fine with the mice in the basement of the old house but the bugs I could never deal with. Sending them back to whence they came, thank you.

message 2396: by Barb in Maryland (new)

Barb in Maryland | 816 comments Ah, the good ole' Brown Marmorated Stink Bug strikes again!!
And, to a bug-phobic person, they may seem 'huge', but in reality the average adult BMSB is about .5-.6 inches long (1.7cm) and just about as wide at the top.
They sneak into houses in the fall to hibernate, but the warmth of the house may cause them to be active. Be thankful that they are only considered a 'nuisance' in New England. In Maryland they are a serious agricultural pest, doing significant damage to fruits and veggies.
Here's the full Wiki, with pictures:

message 2397: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments They're annoying (and pests in agriculture in some places, as Barb says), but as long as they don't bite or sting, I can deal with them. My favorite way is with damp (so they can't escape) toilet paper or paper towels. But their legs have a disconcerting habit of falling off while capturing them...

Oh, I like it that way, too! We have a local bakery that does these amazing two- and three-layer cakes you can buy whole or by the slice, but I can only eat a few bites of my piece with a cup of strong coffee! The cakes are heavenly, but lots of frosting, and I can’t hack the sugar rush - my piece of cake lasts a day or two!
