Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Karlyne, is there a safe place you can go, or is it a matter of not wanting to leave your home? Please be careful!

Carol - no hidden key under a flower pot? I hope the weather is nice and that you get back inside soon!

That made me laugh! My husband is always asking me if I have my phone, and, yes, he's the one who always leaves his! (And I have never lost mine...)

message 2003: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments We would have gone if we were told to, or if we thought we needed to, but we just kept wetting the house down and watching. Our exit road is away from the fire, so we were safe at all times.

Our view has changed, though. It'll be interesting to see how quickly it comes back!

Always have a book - doctor’s office, school pick -up line, locked out of the house....

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Same here! I carry a book as my husband crawls through the shopping like an old snail.

& I'm back in the house now. Luckily I only had to wait about 40 minutes.

No way to break into the house now as we have an alarm. All 3 of our immediate neighbours (+ a family at the other end of our short street)were burgled about 5 years ago & we decided install an alarm before it was our turn.

Oh noes! How embarrassing! I hope you are now safely inside. This scenario is why our neighbor has a key to our house and we hold a key to theirs!

Have you recovered from the wedding yet?

Wait, I thought it was Theresa's son, because I was trying to remember if this is Irish Theresa, because I thought she spelled it without an "h", so that I could ask if she'd seen the letters left by the Irish wildfires because it's been so dry over there. And that, my dears, is how you put together a classic run-on sentence.

Teresa | 2186 comments This is Irish Teresa (yes without the H). If my son told me he was getting married I'd ask him if he had got his wife to be in a lucky bag!!! He hardly ever goes out and says he's quite happy as he is. I'm never getting grand children sob!!

message 2015: by Susan in NC (last edited Aug 08, 2018 12:47PM) (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments My son is the same, shy and reserved but just graduated college, no girlfriend currently and desperate for one - but currently concentrating on learning the family business, and making friends in the area after being away for college for four years.

Married, eek! (I’m in no hurry for grandkids - this one is a great guy but young for his age and a worrier- I’d like him to have some fun before he settles down!)

But, Susan, if he's not going to have fun after he's married, I think he'd better not ever get married! I always think we're so much fun that anyone who marries into our family is lucky (what their family thinks is possibly different)…..

So, Irish Teresa without the "h" (haha, I'll forever think of you like that!), have you seen the letters, mostly "EIRE", from WW2 which are now visible from the air because of the wildfires? Apparently, since Ireland was neutral during the war, they wrote them on the coastlines to remind everyone that there should be no bombing of their neutral country. Belfast, as a shipping powerhouse, and a part of the U.K. was a favorite German target and the Irish wanted no mistakes!

He’s 22, sweet and funny and relatively housebroken if you have any unattached females lying about ( if you’re any indication, yours is EXACTLY the kind of fun family I’d want him to marry into!)
That’s a jumbled sentence for you, but hope it makes sense - he’d be mortified if he knew I was looking for girlfriends for him!

I chased off (literally, throwing rocks, for Pete's sake) a couple of bucks, one of them huge, from our place a few weeks ago. And, then, I thought, uh, that was probably a bit stupid... They're fast, and they have pointy, sticky things that could make short work of a silly woman in flip-flops...

We get a lot of noise about things that happen in the most populated areas, but not much rural news. Of course, other than fires there isn't much news! 😁

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments I am so sorry Karlyne, be safe! And for all our friends roasting in the heat, I’m so sorry. I’m in NC and we expect August to be muggy and nasty-hot, but if you’re not used to it, it can be rotten. Oh, our poor planet - I don’t care whose fault it is, this is not normal!

message 2034: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Well, ours is a dry heat (😄), but with the hottest days of the year today and tomorrow, a mere 14% humidity just encourages the fires and is hard to appreciate! On a happy note, the heat is supposed to break Saturday, so if we can survive until then...

Gosh you're really having it tough. I couldn't cope with the heat ye have. I've been barely getting by with what we have. I'm in Co. Waterford in South East Ireland. We're always called the sunny south east and for once we're living up to the name. It's broken a bit of late. Getting some rain at night and not quite as hot thankfully. Only thing is once it starts raining here it'll forget to stop. We're never happy :-)

message 2037: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I love our four season climate, except that the last few years have been smoke-filled from not only our own fires, but the ones in California, Washington, and Oregon. Ordinarily, the nights cool off beautifully, so the days aren't too bad. But with the smoke cover keeping the heat in and not being able to open the windows, it's just miserable! I am seriously thanking the good Lord for electricity and air conditioning, though!

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Agree, Susan in NC! Can everyone just agree that it is happening, and start thinking about how to minimize the damage it is causing.
There has already been way too much rain this year around here, flooding everywhere, high winds that knock out power for days, tremendous daily temperature fluctuations.

I know you’re up in Va. and you guys have been hit hard with the rain lately; fires, floods, droughts - none of it is going away, and I think we all need to be realistic and plan on how to deal with it.

message 2041: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2186 comments We have quite strict rules here about recycling. I try and buy as little plastic packed items as possible now. We have very little food wastage and the dogs finish off anything that is left. We've been growing our own food for the last few years but I didn't do it this year. It was raining for about nine months and the ground was too wet. Then my mother was ill for weeks and I didn't have time and after she died my heart just wasn't in it. My garden is in an awful state. Every small bit helps and if we all do our own bit it's a start. But yes, things are dire.

I live in Kennewick - one of the Tri-Cities - in eastern Washington State. The smoke is getting to us too. We're in a little bowl so bad air gets trapped here.

Yes! I did not even mention the mountains burning in 2016, although I think that was human-caused.
