Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Turned wet and windy for Hogmanay which is a shame, but it’s still about 4 degrees C! Happy New Year to you all!

Karlyne, I agree. Having the sun shining can almost make the cold tolerable. Alas, our (was 20F, now it's)17F is accompanied by grey skies and enough breeze to make it feel like 5F. I do believe that Baltimore's Inner Harbor will not be overly crowded for their Midnight celebration. Only the hardy (or is that foolhardy?) will be out.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Happy New Year everyone!

We went for a bush walk with our airbnbers. I was pooped afterwards & slept through New Year!

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Gosh this is when I realise how far-flung we all are. You are now in 2018 Carol - and here in Scotland, we still have 3 hours of 2017 to go!

message 1555: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments And we have 9-1/2 to go. And have two more hours of sunshine even! Sorry for all the grey skies, Barb!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'm sipping a glass of Prosecco & thinking of you all!

Happy New Year!

message 1563: by Carolm (new)

Carolm | 63 comments Happy New Year to everyone. It is now late morning here (Alberta, also Mountain Time) and finally after about a week of extremely cold temperatures (- 26 deg C or colder, down to -42 with a wind chill), we are starting to see the Chinook winds come in. It is only -16 at them moment.

message 1564: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Brrrrr! I got goosebumps just thinking of -26 plus wind! Wait, what's that translate to Fahrenheit?

message 1565: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Minus 14.8F, practically balmy. Hahaha!

message 1566: by Carolm (new)

Carolm | 63 comments Normal for this time of year is -3C. But after a week of cold and snowy, sunny and -16 feels balmy!

message 1570: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments Happy New Year from a frigid New England! My parents and I celebrated by going to the movies to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I really enjoyed it. It was basically the same story as Harry Potter and King Arthur, etc. but fun. My parents were confused. I don't know why. My dad saw The Force Awakens and before the movie was a nice little Lego summary.

Ah I saw (and loved) The Last Jedi with my brothers, nephews and Father over Christmas. It was soooo emotional, with Carrie Fisher all over the film.

What confused your Father, Poohbear? Was it that part with shirtless Kylo Ren? I was pretty confused about that too...

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ It is still warm, but now raining heavily - going to be hard on our guests! We are heavily booked this week.

message 1575: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Oh Carol, I'll take some of your rain. We've still not had any even though we were promised. Yeah, I know Welly was being flooded the other morning, but it didn't reach this far up the valleys. Currently sweltering in 32C with just over 70 humidity and NO appreciable breeze.

LOL no! My dad is always confused because he doesn't pay attention and he never remembers anything. My brother's bff is an avid Star Wars fan and he hated this movie because it ignored the entire mythology of the Star Wars universe-more or less. I gathered that but I think as a stand alone fantasy franchise, this trilogy works well. I'm not a huge fantasy fan but I love good storytelling and strong female heroines.

message 1577: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Hahaha! Your father sounds like my husband! His favorite way to describe a movie is "you know, that guy was in it who's married to that girl from Australia or, wait, maybe Texas, and somebody died in it or maybe their twin brother" . The weird thing is how often the kids do figure out what he's talking about.

message 1578: by Lesley (new)

Lesley YIPPEE! We have rain - real rain, not just drizzle, and accompanied by thunder and lightning. Just coming down steadily and hard enough to penetrate the dry earth, but not cause flooding. Should give the region storage lakes a good top up too. Oh, I'm just sooo excited after nearly 7 weeks with only a bit of drizzle in the hills some mornings - sorry! :)

message 1579: by Nick (new)

Nick Imrie (nickimrie) | 479 comments Congrats to you and your region storage lakes, Lesley! Nothing in more fun than rain that's welcome! Except maybe welcome sunshine I suppose - or a good snowfall! Actually, all weather is good when you want it! :D

You could be describing my husband there as well Karlyne. Maybe they're in some secret club that we don't know about. He drives me nuts when we're watching anything together!!

message 1581: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments And he'll watch a movie 30 minutes in, or wander off before the ending. Must be a secret society!

Lesley Abigail wrote: "Send some of that rain over my way (San Francisco Bay Area) if you get too much, Ella’s Gran! We are getting desperate."

It lasted barely 30 minutes! Not enough to do anything. Since then we've been having thunder and lightning but NO rain! If it gets any hotter or humid I'm going to be a pool of lard on the floor soon.

message 1584: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2186 comments It's hard to imagine the weather ye're describing when it's done nothing but rain here for I don't know how long. It's also very cold. A storm hit the country last night but we escaped the worst of it here in the South. Suppose to be stormy again tonight. I'm fed up of it!!

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments Abigail, be safe! I know you have no fires right now, but California is suffering mightily with fires and is dangerously dry...wish we could redirect some of Teresa’s rain or Florida’s freak snow!

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I have a friend who moved to Pensacola this year from Oregon, because she and her kids just need a warmer climate. I'm feeling so bad for her right now! (Although her hometown has been socked in with cold fog for days, so maybe the snow won't be so bad...)

message 1588: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Thank you, Susan! I’m actually in a suburban area right by the water, so the fire danger is low. (But tell that to the residents of Santa Rosa or Ventura! They thought so too.) After years of living in an area outside Los Angeles that was prone to earthquakes, fires, and mudslides, I picked my new home more carefully. I’m even up above the tsunami zone!

That's one of my favorite things to do when we go to the coast: hold my breath through the areas with "Tsunami Alert" signs...

Those are Idaho worthy temps! And colder than we're seeing, too. And, of course, we're used to them, so it's not so bad. I do feel for you all who are not.

Poor lady - but the problem wouldn’t be her in a Florida snow event, it would be others who don’t know how to drive in bad weather!

As Illinois natives who moved to nc 25 years ago, my husband and I are still amazed at how a trickle of snow can shut everything down! And ice storms are the worst! Nobody can be prepared for that...

You forgot to mention toilet tissue! The holy trinity of snow panic buying around here is milk, bread and toilet tissue. I suspect my local Safeway will be jammed around 5 pm today.
This part of Maryland sees enough snow that the road crews are fairly well-equipped--unlike coastal NC, where my in-laws live. Morehead City will be paralyzed by anything over an inch!

message 1600: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 1638 comments Stay safe in the snow and other weird weather! It's hard to imagine being hot and humid when it's been below freezing for over a week. My mom just got back from the grocery store and said it was crazy! The downstairs neighbor was there too. The newspaper reports "near blizzard" for tomorrow. This happens every year people. It's New England! We're hoping it doesn't turn into a repeat of the Snowpocalypse of a few years ago.

When it's done snowing I'll will it all to Leslie and Abigail. Good thing I have a ton of free e-books I haven't read yet. As long as we have electricity to charge my computer and whatever tablets we have in the house.

I also have a booklight to read by if I can find batteries.
