Royal Escape from the Topic - for off topic chit chat
It’s a little obscure, but really a wonderful book! Beautiful language and sly wit. Published in 1926.
Switching over from too much rambling on ”the obligatory first post” thread! Any recommendations for a good Thirkell book to start with? Prefer lighthearted instead of sober.
We had Steampunk over the weekend & it coincided with our town's 150 year anniversary (this is old for NZ) My husband, me & other family members bought tickets & outfits for the ball. & at the start it was a great night in the Pump Station which naturally looks quite Steampunk. Great nibbles, atmosphere, the (admittedly loud) band was rocking. 11.10pm Noise Control showed up. Issued a warning, which effectively finished the night. When they get a warning bands rush to pack up their gear & leave as if there is another complaint their gear is seized - even if they aren't the ones making the noise! Our council hadn't thought to call off their minion. (who is a contractor based in Hamilton)The organisers & police managed to work together to extend the noise allowed hours for the second ball on Saturday night. When we moved here back in the 80s & 90s there were still noisy bands & people having fun on a weekend. Over time, this town has turned into a large retirement village. & more & more bylaws have been passed making it difficult to do anything. The committee weren't even allowed to put up banners advertising the event.

Unfortunately I don't own any of her books & can't justify buying any when I have so many unread books atm.

And loud music is usually acceptable at festivals... Sorry for that drama, hope it did not ruin the steampunkaganza!
The rest of the festival went well. We went to the parade, an exhibition & I went by myself to "steampunk my pet" & the motorised teapot races.I've written to our mayor about this. They weren't the organisers, but they were the backers & they should have thought about this. I went into the council offices & asked when the next community board meeting is. March. Unbelievable.
I'm thinking of writing to the local newspaper as well.
Jane, I enjoyed August Folly and Wild Strawberries, both of them early Angela Thirkell novels, as I recall. (It was a long time ago but my recollection is that they were quite light-hearted.)

I'm going to need to hear more about this 'steampunk my pet' that you speak of...
I love Steampunk! Have I mentioned that my eldest daughter wrote a Steampunk version of The Nutcracker? I keep telling her that they need to actually stage her version...

I'll load up some pictures later. it was fun!
I am off to see some 'old friends' - there is a terra cotta warrior exhibit in Richmond! I visited them years ago in Xian while I was studying in China, and I never thought that any would be allowed to leave the country or tour. I am so excited to see what the exhibit includes, and if I recognize any old faces... haha!
...continuing... so impressive in photos I can't imagine them in person! I hope you recognize an old friend and get to have tea together. 😁

Have a great time!
Enjoy, Critterbee! It was my work's Christmas function last night. Good fun, other than one interminable speech!
Ha! Carol, there's always that one person who says, "I'll keep this short", and then drones on and on... zzzzzzzz....
Karlyne wrote: "Ha! Carol, there's always that one person who says, "I'll keep this short", and then drones on and on... zzzzzzzz...."Hahahahhaaha! He said "I've been told I just have 6 minutes," so they obviously knew what he was like! (& it was yes more like 20 minutes!) & one woman did fall asleep!
My husband (who has a gift for this sort of thing) had gone to the toilet. When he came back & spotted what was happening, he slithered over to the bar, grabbed a beer & went outside!
Carol, your last comment made me laugh! Sheila, thanks for the recommendations. (Sorry for not responding sooner, I’ve not had time to log on to GR in the past few weeks.)
What I love when it is my husband’s event, I get stuck with the speech & he gets away with the beer slither.
Back! The exhibit was amazing, there were 9 warriors/officials and a beautiful horse, as well as artifacts and armor from the area (which is huge). The different types of 'coins' shaped like knives and plows were a surprise. When paying someone, you could actually stab them by mistake, so I guess that prevented people from dunning you too aggressively! There is so much that has been unearthed, and to think it has been buried for over 2200 years! When I was there years ago, they were excavating, and it is amazing how much has been found.
As for long winded speeches... Being such a reluctant public speaker, I can not understand why anyone would go on for so long willingly! Mr Interminable, indeed.
I saw the exhibit in San Francisco several years ago—wonderful. Glad you got to visit again with your friends, Critterbee!

Two years ago, my sister went to a restaurant near Baltimore, that had (what she said were) the best crab cakes. Baltimore people, do you know what this restaurant could be? It was near the airport.
They sold them online, as well, and it would be a nice gift for her, but not if I cannot remember the name. Not a fan of shellfish, myself. But Maryland is known for the high quality of their crabs.
Critterbee--probably the restaurant is Olive Grove on Hammonds Ferry Road, Linthicum Heights, which is near BWI airport.. They do offer to ship their crab cakes, for which they are very well known.
Check out their web site at : http://oliveg.com/
Critterbee,Maryland steamed crabs are so yummy! (So long as you like shellfish. :)) We had them flown down to Alabama when I was in school down there; that was many years ago and that wonderful-hole-in-the-wall seafood joint is long gone. Most of the small local spots we go to now do not ship crab cakes. The only place I've heard of that's close-ish to the airport, will ship crab cakes, and gets fairly good reviews is G & M Restaurant on Hammonds Ferry Rd - I've never been, so can't say for sure. I've also heard good things about Jimmy's Famous Seafood and I believe they will ship food. Maybe also try a google search for Baltimore Magazine Best Crab Cakes; I think they put out a new reader-poll list every year.
Good Luck!! (and be prepared for sticker shock!!!)
I bunked off early for Christmas and I was just lolling around my mother's house, feeling decadent and eating mince pies, when I suddenly realised that I hadn't read a Georgette Heyer all month! I raced over to the group and then I remembered, 'Of course, there isn't a book for this month.' So instead, I thought I'd pop in here (my first time in the Royal Escape) and say, 'Merry Christmas, everyone!'

December can be 'choose your own Heyer' Month.
❇Critterbee wrote: "December can be 'choose your own Heyer' Month"Ha - there's a gap in the market! Why hasn't anyone made a 'Choose your Own Heyer Adventure' book?
You are a Tulip of Fashion about to attend The Dandy Club. You must tie your neck cloth before departing. Do you select
a) The Mathematical (go to page 45)
b) The Oriental (go to page 187)
I’d read that...can’t promise I can tie either one with the ongoing ataxia in my right hand, but I’m willing to try!
And a Merry Christmas to All. Carol, I just love Santa's arm candy! For those who want to read a Heyer-esque mystery over the holidays, I can recommend two: The Santa Klaus Murder by Mavis Doriel Hay and Murder for Christmas by Francis Duncan.
