Royal Escape from the Topic - for off topic chit chat

My comment wasn't intended to be critical, I just don't follow the royals very closely and hadn't heard that Philip was still actively involved with charities, state events and whatnot. He's 95 - hard to believe he's still that active!

No reason why you should follow the Royals at all Tadiana. I don't much myself - but watching the News always keeps me up to date so I know that Prince Philip has been, like the Queen, totally involved in state events, charities and whatnot - despite being in his 90s.
They said on the news that Prince Philip was on the board of 70 charities! Howard, I think you have that plural right . . .

Susan, that was definitely an interesting and fair documentary. I think your description of Philip is apt. I have seen him talking to small groups of young people and he is really comfortable in that environment. He also has that amazing ability to talk to you and make you feel you are the one person he really wants to talk to!!
The Crown on Netflix is a sumptuous and amazing series but they take a few liberties with the truth but then they are making a drama not a documentary. I enjoyed it immensely.
There wasn't a dicky bird about any of this here in Ireland. Then again most people here would not be fans. Some people will breath a sigh of relief that he's gone. He's said some terribly outrageous things at very inappropriate times. He's been called a racist numerous times.
Critterbee wrote: "Carol, do you have a source inside the palace? haha"Haha, no & like Susan of P, I'm not much interested in the monarchy. It just didn't feel like a way they would have announced the deaths.
I hope he enjoys his retirement
Howard wrote: "What is the plural of "Queen Elizabeth", as in "Name three famous actresses who have played three different Queens Elizabeth."? ."I would find another way to phrase it, having no idea what would be the correct way.
'Name three actresses who played Queen Elizabeth on stage or in a feature film'

But I didn't want three actors that played Queen Elizabeth. I wanted three actors that played three different Queens named Elizabeth.

Ah ha! I did not understand that from the first sentence.
I have to share!I was at a fundraiser last night for the local kiwi conservation group - Auckland Zoo staff brought 2 kiwis that they were releasing into the wild. The kiwi were blessed by Maori elders from one of the local iwi and then they were brought around to the tables for us to look at (we were instructed to keep very quiet & no flash photography) I have never seen a kiwi outside of a zoo before and I can't tell you how moved I was. They were so adorable.
Later on one of the zookeepers texted that the 2 kiwis had jumped into the bush without a backwards glance.

Kiwis are so cute! Lucky Carol!
If you were going to vote on a bird/animal that was least equipped to survive in the 21st century the kiwi would be right up there.
yes they are! The zookeeper just cradled them and held what would be their ankles if they were human. I asked if they were sedated but no. They have no clue on how to protect themselves.
I think there is quite a bit of hope. Auckland Zoo has posted videos of their program of hatching eggs and rearing the chicks til they are past the vulnerable stage. Creating predator-free controlled habitats for young Kiwis like Rotorua is an excellent strategy. Bermuda did this with the Bermuda Cahow, a petrel thought for over 300 years to be extinct. Bermuda did many of the same thing Rortorua is doing like eliminating predators from special islands and creating artificial burrows. It's worked amazingly well.
Carol, you lucky duck! Or should I say kiwi? What a wonderful opportunity to see an adorable critter up close - and may I say if it was an American crowd everyone would've tried to take a selfie with that beautiful bird, zookeeper or not... ;-(
Teresa wrote: "What an experience Carol. I'm afraid I lead a very sheltered life compared with a lot of you here."You and me both, Teresa - but I would love to see your beautiful Irish countryside!
Hana wrote: "Oh my! Kiwis are so adorable "Lovely! Thanks for sharing the photo and the information about preservation efforts, ladies - nice to get some upbeat news and information. ;)

& as I said in one of the Penhallow threads, I'm off to Rarotonga next week.Rarotonga is in the Cook Islands. I went there about 3 years ago & I'm hoping it is still the same laidback place I remember. Beautifulpeople & beautiful beaches. The other advantage for Kiwis is that it uses the NZ$.
It is the only place I have ever been where the majority of tourists are Kiwis. Even when I went to Sydney I didn't strike that many!
It sounds like internet is much improved, so I may still be in touch!

Susan in NC: Wow, just googled it, looks fascinating! Do you have a specific itinerary, I see there is a conservation area, do you think you'll see that? Or do outdoorsy stuff, like swimming, snorkeling and hiking? This is moved over from Penhallow thread.
We have been before, so have done a lot of the touristy stuff already, but we will swim, snorkel & kayak. & go to the Saturday morning markets they were great fun.
We may go to the Inland island entertainment (have been to the coastal one) I want to experience the progressive meal & I've been told Coco Putt (mini putt) is hilarious.

Have a great time Carol!
It sounds lovely!

Sleeping at the airport is not fun😤!
sleep??? it's freezing. esp after Rarotonga. The airline has given us some water & cassava chips & a very thin blanket though. Marty bought me a hot chocolate ☺
Hi I'm back - we were two rows behind our Prime Minister (Bill English) on the flight home. I fell asleep this afternoon & am still a bit groggy. Will be back on deck tomorrow. :)
Carol, what a pity I didn't know you were stranded at the airport. I live about an hour away, so probably not a good idea to bring you up here in case you needed to get back quickly for a flight, but I could have come in with a warm blanket or two and a thermos of hot tea at least!! Pleased you are finally home and hope that you had a good holiday.

Marty has a sister in Island Bay, but we decided she wouldn't want to see us at that time in the morning either! I would love to meet up though next time I'm in your neck of the woods! :)
Speaking of stranded... Three of my adorable grandkidlets are stuck in Phoenix, AZ. Their flight was cancelled last night, after sitting in the plane for an hour and a half, and the 120' heat forecast for the next week is not making anything look any better. I'm thinking of driving the 950 miles south to get them...

Keep us posted Karlyne!
Marty now has got a chill. A combination of 5 hours in a really cold airport & when we got home he insisted on airing out the house before turning the heat pump on.
Karlyne wrote: "Sometimes travelling is beyond exhausting!"Well I'm glad that;
a We are retired, so didn't have to worry about going into work
b I had the return day wrong, so I told my boss at the op shop that I would come in Tuesday instead of Monday.
& with the trip. I have just started using Google Drive & I can't figure out how to get my photos from there to here. The hibiscus I'm now using as my avatar I ended up emailing it to myself. (it is from a bush by the bungalow's back door)Sigh. I'm such a Luddite.Highlights
1 We went to a progressive dinner where three families shared their stories and cooked for us
2 Going to church. No choir - the congregation all have amazing voices. I was moved to tears.
3 Marty writing a romantic message in the sand on my birthday!❤
Lowlights
1 Rarotongan institution The Palace Burger Bar still served very cheap burgers on a Wednesday, but they have changed hands & the burgers are horrible & the chips were salty & greasy.
2 We knew food would be expensive as they import almost everything from NZ & we have had severe price hikes. But they now export fish so it has gone up by around 50% Still a lot cheaper than NZ.
3 The trip home.

I just happened to see a PBS documentary earlier this week about the Queen and Prince Philip, their early romance and married life working in the "family firm" - I thought that was funny that they called it that! I've always admired her, but didn't realize what a sharp cookie he was. You see pictures of them as a young couple and how stunning they were and it's easy to forget the years of uncomplaining public service - I mean of course they live in all that splendor, but not really any time to yourself.
The documentary said Philip isn't a fan of small talk and chit chat, they said he's very intelligent and funny and prefers more in-depth conversations with smaller groups. Makes his dedication to all the public duties more impressive when you know he's perhaps more of an introvert!
