Karlyne wrote: "Are you allowed scissors in your library? How fun to pick up some catalogs and magazines and let people cut out their own, too! "You know, funny story, we used to until:
A) someone broke a pair trying to cut their shoes (I do not know why they wanted to cut their shoes in the library)
and
2) A patron used a pair to trim his hair and beard.
Since then, we only allow 'supervised desk usage' to ensure the safety and hygiene of the scissors!

Oh, dear! Thanks for the laugh - libraries really do attract all kinds!
Critterbee wrote: "You know, funny story, we used to until:

Blech - & not the answer I was expecting.
The op shop I volunteer at doesn't sell kitchen knives - & we are donated quite a few. They go in the staff freebie box.
When the new boss started she found this illogical - if a customer went amok they could just smash a glass as a weapon. But when she tried to put them in the shop she had a rebellion. No one would do the till.
They are back in the freebie box.*
* If we ever got a top quality set of German knives they would go on TradeMe.
If you ever get a top quality German set, you can send them to me!!! I'll send you some scissors from a library I know of....
Teresa wrote: "Just looked Tom Tierney up on amazon. Wow some great books. More for my wish list!!"They're really high quality; my girls had some way back when!
Karlyne wrote: "If you ever get a top quality German set, you can send them to me!!! I'll send you some scissors from a library I know of...."Hahahah! Honestly they are usually rubbish - wouldn't cut butter.
Any top quality ones - get behind me in the queue!!!

I have some of those won't-cut-butter types, so I'll just take a number after you!

I had never thought of that! Scary! Having a nice selection of sharp knives near an unknown quantity of cash, especially if you are working alone!
Teresa wrote: "Just looked Tom Tierney up on amazon. Wow some great books. More for my wish list!!"His work is outstanding! I really want to have an attractive display, to do the dolls justice.
I will take a snap when it finally is finished.
Critterbee wrote: "... especially if you are working alone!"We never work alone. One Saturday when there was only one person available, she brought her (adult) daughter. Thats why there is now a paid weekend worker as most of us don't want to do Saturdays unpaid.

It's a sad commentary on modern life, but I hate seeing anyone work a till without another worker on duty. Some of the espresso shops around here take in tons of money, and I'm always glad when there are several of them working. Our teeny town up the mountain usually only has one employee working at the coffee shop, but there are lots of people around with rifles in their trucks, which pretty much stops robberies...
Teresa wrote: "It's a bloody sad world we're living in!!"It is, Teresa! I have decided to not read the news anymore. After two really disturbing murders (not nearby, but in places we know), I think my emotional sanity can't take it!

Oh, ugh! Librarians should NOT have to police their scissors!

Isn't that a shame? :-(

Yes - we also have odd things happen in our library. It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round and sooner or later they all seem to visit public libraries. Interesting things happening all the time at the one I work in.
Susan in NC wrote: "Isn't that a shame? :-( Oooh, I may have given a wrong impression of the risk!
The main reasons for not working alone are;
* Needing breaks.
* Need at least one person on till and one out the back receiving stock. Unfortunately Saturday (when we have so much trouble getting staff) is when we get the most donations.
* Shoplifters. A favourite trick (as far as I know it's not been played on this shop) is for a group to come in. One person distracts the person on the till while the others fill their pockets!

Karlyne wrote: "To lighten our mood, I was just on the phone with my daughter & I put salt in my tea. I will now go make a new cuppa..."Ooops! haha! Did you notice what you did before taking a sip?
Ugh, I have those mental breaks sometimes too, especially after a bad night’s sleep. My poison of choice is putting the butter in the tea instead of on the toast. Very Tibetan, I suppose, but I’ve never acquired the taste.

Nope, I didn't notice until I sipped. Luckily, it was only half a teaspoon. I started laughing (and choking) while still on the phone and the kids thought it was pretty funny.I've done the butter in the tea before - on purpose, even! If the tea is strong enough to stand a teaspoon upright in it, it's not too bad.
Karlyne wrote: "To lighten our mood, I was just on the phone with my daughter & I put salt in my tea. I will now go make a new cuppa..."Enjoy your fresh cup while it's hot (and sugared!)
Amy wrote: "Did you guys see that an emergency meeting was called at Buckingham for all staff? It's 3 AM there."What's happening?
Nobody knows yet. All the staff for the Queen was called into an emergency meeting at 3 AM. There's a lot of speculation. Prince Philip is 96 and the queen is 91.Some of my British friends are saying it's a media blackout but I don't know exactly what that means.

Means no news getting out.
To me it reads more like an announcement that either or both the Queen & Prince Philip are going to start curtailing their duties drastically. They have already started.
Carol - I like that idea but I don't know why they would call stuff in from Balmoral at 3 AM if that was the announcement.
Unless that is some very dark humor and you mean they're going to start curtailing their activities because they're dead. I don't mean that to be disrespectful. Just curious. Some people I know have a very dark sense of humor. And I'm a little on edge tonight. We're leaving for Scotland in 2 1/2 weeks and I'm a little worried about what this will mean for our expensive trip.
And just a little worried that there's gonna be a lot of sad royal family members. I was pretty devastated when my grandparents died.
I read a fascinating long read in the Guardian, I think a couple weeks ago, about the massive and intricate plans for the Queen's eventual state funeral. Most British people have only known her as queen, so it'll be quite earth-shattering, I would think; they say it's called London Bridge is Down and it's been decades in the planning. I hope that's not it, she's amazing and an institution; hopefully just scaling back, which would be well-deserved!
Amy wrote: "Carol - I like that idea but I don't know why they would call stuff in from Balmoral at 3 AM if that was the announcement."Hmmm, news sites I've checked don't say staff were called at 3am. I'll have a look at some UK sites.
I'm not a Royalist but I have to say their stamina has been amazing.
I just shared our conversation with my husband and he says he is seeing various news outlets reporting Prince Phillip has died and the official announcement will be at 8 am.
Amy no dark humour but I would think at their ages they would want to start cutting back.I can't find anything on the Guardian - which is kind of ominous.
There was no media blackout. It was announced this morning there would be a statement from Buckingham Palace at 10am and there duly was. All the media were unanimous in saying said that no one had died and no one was ill. So we knew it was either Philip retiring or Harry getting married. Apparently the Queen and Prince Philip wanted to tell the staff first.
Phew! So glad the media rumor mill was wrong, he said the Palace was denying it but I think denials stir them up more. Well good for him, hope he is well and enjoys his retirement. Oh Harry getting married would be happy news I would think, excuse for a party!
I didn't see a funny comment this morning on Twitter for all of this unnecessary hubbub..."why is it news that a 95-year-old man is retiring from waving?"
I know his duties are substantially more than that but I still laughed at that comment.
DID. Not didn't.It looks like I need to retire from posting on Goodreads from my phone while my little boy is in taekwondo.
Amy, good news also that this shouldn't have a negative impact on your family trip to Scotland - have a grand time!
Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ wrote: "What is Philip retiring from? I hadn't realized that he was still actively working at anything."I'm not much of a monarchist, , but in fairness, no one can say that Philip has not worked his socks off right up until now carrying out his duties as Royal Consort and supporting the very many charities of which he is a patron. He has maintained his involvement in areas like The Award and I have personally watched him talk to young people receiving their Gold Award at Holyrood and seen how much they have enjoyed it. He has maintained an incredible number of public engagements despite being 95. I'm happy to cut him some slack.

What is the plural of "Queen Elizabeth", as in "Name three famous actresses who have played three different Queens Elizabeth."?

No ideas about the display, but a link would be appreciated when it's done! ;p
