That sounds awesome. I'm so glad to see Gh's works getting the appreciation they deserve!

The evening started with dinner. I ate with two sisters who only came because it was GH. One woman talked of a huge bin of ALL GH books she collected for her mother (a soulmate) and now has. She bought them on-line when no new editions were available. So you would have enjoyed interacting with the other audience members during dinner, the Q and A, and then the dessert with the actors afterward. Sylvester told me he was blown away by the enthusiasm of the audience.
Oh, Lori, what a fabulous evening! So glad you enjoyed it so much. I've got to say, Netflix Originals or Amazon Originals would have a ready made audience for GH adaptations. Binge -watching galore with all of us who love GH & Austen and have watched and re-watched all that is available. Please let us know if they do put Sylvester into their season, need some time to be able to make travel arrangements from California, but would be a great reason to visit Chicago again.

Carol, aren't you going to Australia next month and isn't part of the reason to attend the GH convention (or party or what-have-you)? Or are my wits wandering once again?

Yes, because I know that I, for one, want to live vicariously through your trip!

Just a FYI that you can now find the Discussions page under the "Community" tab at the top -- not quite as convenient as being the home page but at least it isn't gone forever!
Yes, my block message is a little wrong. If you go to your avatar & click on it, you get both my discussions & my groups. There is a survey on the site wide announcement if you want to place any feedback.
I keep forgetting & hitting home when I want to stay in discussions, but I guess I'll adjust.
Christy B has put "In Absentia" as her title- just to make it clear she is no longer involved with the group.
I'm leaving in an hour & my husband will brain me if he sees me on the computer again! :D
See you when I get back!
I just received an email from Bas Bleu, in which they list 16 lessons learned from Georgette Heyer's novels to honor her 115th birthday on August 16. It has some funny parts. Here is a link, and then the list copy/pasted.https://thebluestockingsalon.com/2016/08/10/16-lessons-weve-learned-from-georgette-heyer/
1. Speak up, ladies! A wilting flower never gets picked.
2. A sensible woman who can handle a crisis is worth her weight in gold.
3. Don’t waste your time on a man who can’t handle his whip.
4. A marriage of convenience just may turn into the ride of your life—in a high-perch phaeton, no less.
5. Cross-dressing can be a real turn on.
6. Don’t write off that good-looking cousin; he just may be the man of your dreams!
7. Money troubles? No worries: If you’re a quick-witted, warmhearted, fresh-faced beauty, your luck will be changing any…minute…now…
8. A man too frequently in his cups is more trouble than he’s worth.
9. Don’t worry about being “on the shelf;” you’re a not a spinster until you’re at least 28.
10. Manners matter, but reputations are overrated.
11. Beware a man who wears too many fobs and seals—it will take him longer than you to get ready for the ball.
12. Meddling matrons are the worst matchmakers.
13. Of course you can make that bad boy good…just as soon as he realizes he’s met his match.
14. The most saturnine of men is only looking for the right woman to turn his frown upside down.
15. The best place to meet an eligible bachelor is while trespassing on a grand country estate. Bonus points if it’s his grand country estate, which he recently inherited from a crotchety old uncle.
16. Forget love at first sight; proven friends make the best partners.

If like to know others' favorite.
Ladies? Gentlemen?"
I'm torn between #2 and #10, but I am leaning toward #2. Nobody wants to be in a crisis situation with someone who's freaking out, that does not help! Suck it up and drive on is something of a family motto...
I like #3 too, also #2 and I thought #7 was pretty funny :)But I'm now racking my brain - which GH has the h meeting the H while trespassing on the grand country estate he just inherited from a crotchety old uncle??

Oh, No 11 without a doubt!
No 13 is positively dangerous - too many women have believed it true in real life and ended up with wife-beaters and psychopaths that they then can't bring themselves to leave.

Happy Birthday, Kim and Georgette! If the temperature would cool down about 50', I'd bake you both a cake...#14 was the funniest, I think!
Thank you very much, Carol. Husband took me for afternoon tea at The Rotunda @ Neiman Marcus to kick things off. Daughter taking us to dinner tonight. Thursday we are going with our son to see Yo Yo Ma and Silk Road Ensemble. Much better than last year when I could barely make it out of bed. ;-)

I just wanted to mention how much I loved Sydney! People there were so friendly - we just had to look bewildered & a local would ask if we were lost & needed help!
Special Highlights
Other than the conference?
Being given a tour around The Rocks Area by my husband's nephew, who is a town planner & hearing his insights.
Seeing an aboriginal blessing ceremony for The Rocks now also going by it's Aboriginal name.
Getting to the Ken Done Gallery. The people I stayed with hate his stuff but I like it - & we bought a few things.
Hunter Valley. Not only great wine but it is really pretty. & at the final vineyard we visited we saw 5 kangaroos among the vines. (they don't eat the grapes as they are too sour for them)
Blue Mountains - also lovely.
Disappointments
I so much wanted to walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge but Marty did that the day of the conference.
The gambling culture (bad enough in NZ) is horrendous! & they are building a large new casino in The Rocks area which won't help.

Sorry I have not reported, have been exhausted. Will gather some energy soon & will report, it was sublime.

I hope it was wonderful, Kim. Carol, rich thread..and I'm just catching up--late to the party! Meanwhile I loved Ken Done's work. It reminded me of an Israeli artist, Raphael Abecassis who does these wonderfully cheerful paintings in primary colors with gold leaf accents. I have a Passover Haggadah that he illustrated--one of my favorites. It also made me think of a New York artist, Joe Mangrum, who does awesome street mandalas in sand. There seems to be some new rule about adding pictures. My usual formatting HTML code does not work. Drat these people at GR.

For ourselves we just got some place mats, but we spent enough that they gave us a 2016 calendar. I also have a handbag that I inherited from my mother. It isn't my favourite example of his work. I was hoping to buy a replacement but they are no longer made. The originals were such good quality that they don't wear out so sales dropped.
With the coding it could be a bug. GR now buggier than the Surrey with a fringe on the top!

Hana wrote: "Love The Ken Done website!"& the shop itself is a beautiful building right in The Rocks.
Yes Joe Mangrum's stuff is lovely, but to me looks quite different from Ken Done's. :)
I think I was a bit younger when I fell in love with Mary Stewart, Susan. Saw Moon Spinners on the Wonderful World of Disney, started tracking down all her books. Our JR high/HS library had a lot of them, so I know I read & re-read those, & I read Madam, Will You Talk? and The Ivy Tree really early, as my mom owned first editions. They did not look like much from the outside, but, oh, the adventures inside! Am about to start a re-read of all of her suspense books, it is time.

Don't you love those books that are dear friends to be revisited, sure to offer comfort and pleasure whenever you need it? Life is good (reading life, anyway!)...

I do. I fell right into the story before bed & got to page 75. I remember reading it as an 11/12-year old, and I saw all the French and the references to classical history & the architectural terms & I gave my young, skinny self a pat on the back for knowing a good story when I saw it & persevering. I remember digging out our French dictionary & regular dictionary to look up things later, but did not let anything stop me once I started the book. There is a forward that Katherine Hall Page wrote about Mary Stewart in this edition that I liked, her attitude about not caring what genre people put her in, just wanting to tell a good story that she herself would like to read, and only thinking of books in 2 classes--well-written that one wants to read & badly which one does not--I really enjoyed that. And I think she succeeded.

I adored The Moon Spinners, too—and also got into Mary Stewart because of seeing the movie, at a youth social at my church, of all places. And I’m in complete agreement with Mary Stewart about the only important distinction being between well-written books that one wants to read and poorly written ones that one does not. There’s way too much emphasis today on genre and subgenre and subsubgenre and classification in general. Makes it very hard to write and publish original books.

That's all driven by marketing, not a natural breakdown for books. I have to roam all over a bookstore, when I can roam, as I am looking for good books, not good YA books, or good chick lit, or cozy mysteries or whatever sub genre they are pushing. It is harder on-line, genre connections are built into the algorithms & I am an outlier reader, I sample from almost all the boxes.

You’re right, it’s the search algorithms that control our lives. They leave no space for serendipity! And unfortunately, the publishers are acquiring based on the genre classifications too.

Am stuck on Bay Bridge, husband thought we had enough gas to get home. He was sadly mistaken. Have a book light and a book. Sigh.

Oh, how frustrating, Kim! At least you have a book with you! I always like to have one with me when I go out for just that reason. You never know what might happen!

Same here! My husband goes into a shop for "just a minute" & he's gone for at least 20!
