Iris Rikker starts her first day with a notorious murder. How well or poorly did she do initially? We're there any things she could have done differently?

Melissa (melissasd) | 194 comments No one wants to start a new job as a sheriff with a murder. I think she handled it pretty well considering she had no idea what she was doing. I expected her to make mistakes.

Tracey (trakka) | 407 comments I don't know how differently things are in the US but I had this niggly feeling that someone who hadn't had much experience wouldn't be made Sheriff. I think she handled it very well considering but I just couldn't see how it would happen in the first place.

This is one of my pet peeves in our state government systems. Each are different in terms of which municipal positions are elected versus appointed. Judges and law enforcement, IMO, should never be on the ballot as most people don't know anything about them. I remember in a past election here in my state where the popular state Supreme Court Chief Justice was unseated because his opponent was named Leslie and everyone thought he was a woman (he was not). He was unprepared for that role and lasted one term.

If you hold elected officials accountable for their appointments, I think it would be a better situation.

With that said, as it turned out in this story, the previous Sheriff needed to be ousted so there's an argument that the system really worked:)

Tracey (trakka) | 407 comments Thanks for the explanation Jonetta. Good point about the previous Sheriff who needed to be ousted!
