What have you abandoned?

It's painful for me to admit that I abandoned The Dog Stars, which would have been my Colorado book. I got over 100 pages in and still just couldn't get into the book. I abandoned one other book already this yet but it was a book taking place in Canada, called Skinny - which I thought was just plain awful.
Oh there's no shame in it. And sometimes sharing why you didn't care for a book can inform someone else's decision!
Whenever I abandon a book or give it a 2-star or less rating, I always try to at least put a few lines in the review about what affected my decision so drastically. Maybe it helps nobody, but maybe it does!
I haven't abandon ship yet but I am really struggling to get through Their Eyes Were Watching God The deeeeepppp southern dialect is killing me. I feel like I'm in first grade having to learn to read all over again. Has anyone read this book and have any input? I want to finish. I'm about half way through. My question is, is it worth sticking out?
you are going to be horrified, but I abandoned The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, after about 5 pages, because I had enough of the s** and f** words. So for New Jersey I'm going to try Five-Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History

It was difficult getting into the rhythm of the dialect and reading it with a 21st century mindset, but it was worth reading - if just to finally check it off my TBR list.
Well I have made some headway in Their Eyes Were Watching GodI'm going to stick it out. I'm 73% done.
I abandoned Winesburg, Ohio - it's bleak and the audiobook narrator just doesn't work for me, his reading lulls me to sleep and makes me loose interest.

The diaglog slows you down.
I really hate giving up on a book. I've been reading (off and on) Riding the Iron Rooster by Paul Theroux for over a year now. His descriptive passages are good, but his condenscending attitude to the people he meets is a real put-off.

Manda wrote: "I have just abandoned my delaware choice - beloved by toni morrison. had two attempts and just cannot get into it."I did the same thing - tried reading it twice. Now I'm looking for a new read for Delaware.
I just abandoned A Map of Tulsa: A Novel. I'm to old to read about "bored with life" college freshmen. Now I have to figure out a good book for Oklahoma.
I am officially abandoning American Gods I'm reading on my kindle about 20% done and have absolutely no idea what I read. Not because I don't understand but because I'm bored. Maybe I am just not in the right frame of mind to read it now. Maybe I will try again later. I hate abandoning a book but I just can't finish....sigh
I abandoned Waterloo, one of the two books I had been considering for Texas. It is the story of politicians in Austin, and was just not very interesting.

My first abandoned book for this challenge is Shadow Country, which is a mighty tome set in Florida. It won the National Book Award and was a January pick for the Southern Lit group I'm in. I just couldn't get through it... iI do want to read it someday, but I'm putting it aside for this year. I did get a review copy of Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories, which will do nicely for Florida as a replacement.
